Title: Home needed for young cat ...
Post by: Patience on June 07, 2011, 15:24:49 PM
This cat turned up on our doorstep a few months ago - unable to find its owners - we've given it all the injections and had it spayed - it would be welcome to stay but does not intergrate at all well with the other cats (constant fighting in the home, we have tried everything we and everyone else can think of).

I think it has a problem with it's back that makes it very sensative from the chest area back and this is making it fearfull. It is very loving and is fine to pet so long as you stay away from its lower back (otherwise it will try and get away or otherwise stop you from touching that area). Sadly if we can not find a home we will have to put it to sleep as I think it would be unfair to do anything else.

I don't want to go down this route - so if anyone does not have a cat and would like one please get in touch soon.

Having been so kind to this sweet cat surely thinking of putting it to sleep is hardly the right answer, I hear what you are saying about it's back but it may be a better idea to take it to the animal sanctuary where it can be cared for and rehomed,  mention the problem with its back when you take it, if  you e mail Tinx or Terrie on here they will give you advice, the telephone number and directions.

Thanks for your response June.

I do know where it is and the work they try to do, but I am also aware there are limitations on what they are capable of and in an area with so many cats in need of help I can understand that they struggle. My understanding is that they are so inundated with cats that the majority have to be put down anyway - as this cat does not relate well to other cats and is fearful of them, the idea of putting it in a cage with a lot of others so it can live in fear for a couple of weeks before it is put down does not seem like a kindness to me. That is why I am writing here.

This is not a decision I have taken lightly, I know if I have to put her down I will be heavy of heart for some time afterward.

Hi ,

You wrote "I think it has a problem with it's back that makes it very sensative from the chest area back and this is making it fearfull." . Did you ask a vet , what he/she thinks ?

I would recommend to show the cat to KENTVET near Migros. Mr. Cezmi OCAK and Mrs. Aynur OCAK are very experienced vets and make discounts for street pets. They speak english and might even come to your home if possible :

Hi,
No I don't think I will use Kent vet again - we had to have a cat "put to sleep" there (it had been involved in an accident and had broken it's back - it was done on the vets advice (before everyone tells me I should have done more / tried harder, etc., etc. in addition it wasn't my cat I was helping the owner who didn't have access to transport).

Rather than give the cat an overdose of anaesthetic as I have seen in the UK, they simply gave it a drug to stop it's heart, thus sending the poor animal into shock and convulsions rather than the peaceful end it could have had. I still live with the vision of that sometimes when I lie in bed at night, I find it hard to believe that anyone could intentionally do that to an animal, back home I would have taken it up with to the RSPCA. However we are in Turkey and perhaps that is what Kent vet think is the best way to do it; I do not, and so will not return there. Frankly I think it would have kinder to take a brick to it's head, at least that would have been quick and the poor thing would have known nothing about it.

Of course we have taken the cat to the vet before coming to this decision, to suggest otherwise implies that I am either stupid, tight fisted or heartless in this matter. We happen to use Lara Vet who seem to have a great care for the animals we have taken there, to the extent I actually enjoy watching him with the animals - he makes it as stress free as he can for them.

I don't know if they give a discount for street animals, we find that they are good and believe them to be reasonably priced so we use them on that basis. I don't recommend them to anyone, each must make his / her own choices in these matters, I am simply stating that I use them and will continue to do so having tried several others around Fethiye (I also like that he lives above the surgery so in an emergency he is there in minutes as we found out the other night when another neighbour's cat was hit by a car.)

There is nothing wrong with this cat that they can tell, yet it behaves as it does, but considerng the amount of back pain that humans experience and yet it is often impossible to diagnose the source despite them being able to voice the problem perhaps we should not be suprised that the same can exist in other animals.

Because of this (the cat's behavour) I am not looking to offload the animal where it will be with other animals and thus frightened or fighting all the time.

I have done what research I can to find a different solution so that it can continue with our other cats but have not been able to find one, if there is anyone here who is a cat behavioural specialist and has another suggestion then I would be happy to listen to that.

If there is someone who doesn't have a pet but would like to try with this little poppet I would be pleased to hear from them. If they want to try but are worried that it might not work out, I am prepared to take the cat back and re-assume responsibility for it.

Thank you for the datailed information Nigel.

We ourselves have six cats plus some coming to eat and drink and go. They are all different characters , some have to be seperated , some like or dislike the others. I can understand you.

I hope You 'll find the best solution.
