As a follow on to the thread about the 'most ridiculous thing you brought out to Turkey' (still reeling about Apple Tea, Scunner!).... and as an aid to Supacabby who's selling up in the UK and moving out here, it made me wonder what other members had sold/dumped/given away, prior to The Big Move, which they later had to replace with an inferior quality, more expensive substitute.
I have suggested to Mark that he hangs onto his basic tool kit (that sounds almost smutty!), and also cutlery - both of which can be bought here but tend to be cheap 'made in PRC' rubbish... what else would you suggest he should hold on to?
-
His Taxi :)
-
I am really glad we brought all our kitchen equipment, toolbox and high thread count bedding!
The digital luggage scales for returning visitors are pretty essential and a couple of uk extension leads which we put a turkish plug on are also useful for visitors.
-
Six years ago we had four single beds bought brand new as we thought we would rent out our place. When we quickly decided not to rent, we decided we wanted two double beds. We found a Furniture Shop where the guy had some lovely big handmade double beds, we bought two, but being very new to the area we did not know what to do with the four singles. The shop owner said he would take them away and sell them for us and give us the money on our next visit. On our next visit the Furniture shop had gone. I so regret handing over the beds as we could have donated them to one of the local charities.
-
I regret not bring my quilts over. When I managed to find good ones for the winters they were very expensive and not as good as what you can find in the uk.Also A years worth of Johnsmiths smooth.:D
-
When I go back to UK to get the student house ready I'm going to swap the horrible cheese grater from the Sunday market for my lovely IKEA one.
-
we wish we had brought over some sheets.... As the ones here are useless, they shrink in the wash and are then really creased...! and never fit the size of bed we have...!!
-
Thank you to Fastlady for starting this topic, another bottle of Baileys in the luggage I guess now!
I (& many others I'm sure) will benefit greatly from everyones experience, I've removed the spare cutlery from the charity shop box & it's now packed in the Calis freight box to go out in August!
It will be interesting to see what else I bring that I never thought I'd need!
As for you Mr Jenkins, my taxi is most definatley NOT coming with me, 60 hours + a week for many years, it's time for it to sleep lots, just like it's old owner lol.

:):D ;)
-
Thanks for starting the new list Janet, I have already made a long list of things to bring back with me in August.
-
.a set of decent plastic wine glasses are very handy for the pool too...
-
We sold most of our stuff and gave the rest to the good causes. One thing I really regret giving away was a set of 4 tallish Smirnoff glasses which were made into a sort of bullet shape into the heavy base; with a line to show where to pour the vodka to and then fill the rest with orange juice. They are very cool and made perfect V&O's. Strange that we sold a large chunk of our lives and the thing I wish I'd kept was something that came free with a bottle of Smirnoff :-\
-
Just thought of something else - a potato masher! they have started selling them now but horrible plastic ones which invariable come away from the handle! Oh - and a spoon with holes in.....
-
Slow cooker, decent tin opener, food processor, my huge red original metal cocoa cola sign which I sold at a boot sale for £30 and all my quirky knick knacks and oranments. The ornaments out here are either expensive and over the top or cheap and cheesy.
-
Deep fat fryer - the one I bought here second hand was more expensive and doesn't heat up as hot. Pyrex dishes. Enamel roasting tin with lid. Mostly kitchen stuff. Baking tins. My big whistling kettle instead of my small one. My mini garden tools and my sed bed.
So glad I brought my slow cooker and big george foreman grill :-)
-
Maybe not now but at one time a decent corkscrew was impossible to find. We eventually got ours at M&S on Rhodes.
-
I think I'll just bring the kitchen, minus the sink!
Thanks all, keep the ideas coming.
-
fast lady I bought spoons with holes at Fethiye market. One metal and one wooden
-
If anybody is interested there is a little shop in fethiye that sells slow cookers metal potato mashers baking tins etc loverly glasses, its in the road behind the big Mosque on the right hand side coming from the dolmus stop. The slow cooker was a nice size 139 tl, the one thing that I wish I'd brought from the U.K. is a years supply of anti ageing cream and my very expensive ladies spade my Turkish one just isn't the same
-
I know it's really silly but if you use sheets and blankets (useful in the summer) blankets in the UK are better/nicer.
-
Nippon - beats anything sold locally
-
Regret giving away all our wrought iron window grilles! Thats was bonkers! Glad we brough sheets , corkscrew and cutlery over from the UK but all the rest we got locally and cant fault it.(ooh except blankets would agree those horse hair ones they have over there are vile but we've never needed to use them!)
-
My V6 4Motion VW Golf and Mrs KKOB's Honda CBR600.
-
Yes, we had good camping 'glasses & plates' plus a good camping table (handy for BBQ's). Plus, we had a good china tea pot plus jug and sugar bowl with plates and bowls. Gave them to a charity shop, and had I known that no bugger would buy them at the car boot, I'd have packed them to come here (we had the car boot sales AFTER our stuff had left for Turkey). That one really burns...
Sometimes I have regretted selling the tumble dryer, too.
-
..ah those smirnoff glasses are very heavy boss, 445g each - before they are filled!!
Love them, but I have a pair if you really want them - just to prove this forums worth it.
-
I miss my dyson, wish I'd bought that over when we moved here
-
Dyson, yes. We had an upright that was VERY old. But I wish I had bought a cylinder Dyson to send over here. I am really getting fed up with replacing the bags on my Fakir.
-
I do recall someone bringing their upright Dyson over in their suitcase - not much else in there with it though [:o]

We never use a potato masher, we use our electric mixer. We always get smooth mash.
-
if anyone misses their dyson, pressure cookers,or plastic glasses try these web sites. They deliver for a small fee or most times its free depending on how much you spend.Hepsiburada.com or Eryon.com.Sorry they are turkish but the prices are far cheaper than most shops here. They sale everything .
-
Thanks Mac - could have done without spending over an hour trawling through both sites getting over excited - still no dinner on...... my poor husband will be starving when he gets home :-)
-
My second wife she had a nice sports car :D

Thanks for this, spent the afternoon comparing prices as was going to arrange to have a few things brought over.
Certainly hepsiburada is very competetive, no need to get from uk, so thanks ever so much.
Haven't had time to look at the other site yet but will do. Thanks again.
-
Yes thanks Mac, new Dyson comming
-
We brought our Dyson "Ball" over with us, wouldn't be without it.

I can't get eryon.com to work, is that definitely the right spelling?

Mark

it's ereyon.com
-
Thank you
-
Thanks Scunner, I have found this really useful. It deserves to go back to the top and get some fresh ideas. I shall now be bringing some decent bedding, I hate 'scratchy' sheets, along with a good corkscrew, a decent can opener, and a slotted spoon !
-
And saucepans with a long handle and not two little ones :)
-
Food scales not the stupid little ones you get in Turkey and my pyrex measuring jug which still measure pints...I regret not taking our quality electric blanket.. The ones in Fethiye are down right dangerous...
-
Nippon - beats anything sold locally
Absolutely essential - and I'm not joking!
-
Bring a slow cooker.. Only £9.00 in Asda and like hen's teeth in Fethiye. Also those little plastic holders to poach eggs in, no such thing in Turkey.
-
Jacqui, where can you get those little poached egg holders? I keep melting ours! 8)
-
Ah, you need silicone ones Hamlet, it's all the rage these days :)
-
The old metal ones were better.
-
So where are yours :D
-
Two words ...... First wife 8)
-
Ah, but is she happy :D
-
No idea, but I am! :D
-
They sell them in most of the supermarkets, I got mine in Asda, but the have them in Tesco and Morrisons.
-
Like you've been in Asda! ;)
-
Well normally the Staff visit for me, but as Asda asked me to perform the opening.. I thought I would take a look around... ;D :)
-
I've packed my favourite sharpest knife, not sure what they will make of that at the airport, if some beady eyed Turk picks it up on the X-ray machine!
-
I'd make sure it's not in your hand luggage :D
-
Now quite that daft !! :o
-
Not. Dohh...
Just blond

I remember (going way off topic now) just after 9/11, we flew to Belfast from Luton and at the security check (Luton) we had to wait for a family of four, all adults, who were having a bit of an argument with the security chaps. Turns out, the father's keyring was a penknife, small but prohibited. He was told he would have to leave it and man, he absolutely refused. It was a present apparently, sentimental value and all. As his final gambit, he said he would stand and break the blade off. The security said no, as this would leave a sharp stub which really was no better. His family were pleading with him to stop being such an idiot and chuck it in the bin. In the end (and we were now worried about getting through in time for our flight), the security guy said he would go and get his superior.
A rather stern (and pretty hard) looking supervisor arrived and asked for the man's boarding card, which he gave.
"Right Sir, you can have this" (boarding card) "or you can have this" (penknife).
-
I did exactly the same thing a few years ago when flying back from Miami. It was only a small ladies Swiss Army knife , which I loved it was so useful. The American security guy spotted it and asked me what it was, I answered "it's a penknife", he looked at me in absolute disbelief, his face was a picture. "A penknife, maam, you're carrying a penknife???"
Mind you, it was also soon after 9/11 and the whole world was being super security conscious.

When the whole no liquids thing just started we went to Glasgow Airport and my bag was search and they actually took my compact with solid powder in it and told me it was not allowed. They put it in a large glass case with all the other confiscated items. As we looked at the case the thing that immediately took our eyes was the largest tube of Anusol we had ever seen, pressed against the glass. My husband remarked to me that someone would have trouble "sitting" through the flight.
-

Thanks Jacqui, only found the complete pan when I was back last, but I didn't go to Asda, I'll have to get one of my minions to look there for me. :)
-
Hi, These are the ones we have, both here in the U.K. and in Turkey. I think they are around £1.50 in the supermarkets http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fusion-Poachpod-Poacher-Two-Pack-Silicone/dp/B000P6FD3I/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1376899240&sr=8-5&keywords=single+egg+poacher
Can recommend them, as they are really handy to use and don't make the pan messy.
-
Going back to the knife issue, my mate bought some Turkish delight in Hisaronu, the shop wrapped it with the ribbon stuff you scrape with the edge of a knife to make into bows, put the 2 packs into a bag and we left.
When he got home (to UK) he unpacked his T. Delight from his hand luggage and opened the bag, inside was the 5" sharp knife used for making the bows. :o That bag went through 2 x ray machines at Dalaman.
-
Don't get rid of your sense of humour, it's essential to keep you sane when ridiculous things happen when living abroad.
Keep an open mind and adapt and integrate where possible. ;)

THE best advice yet, I reckon.

When they brought out the liquids restriction my daughter was gutted when they confiscated and 'binned' a 200ml jar of Clarins face cream worth about £40
I think they must have a car boot every week with all the 'binned' items, including pen knifes, tweezers, face creams and anything else they deem to be to dangerous to go on board!
-
Dalaman thought my little hand held luggage scales were too dangerous to take on the plane.
The control guy pulled out the inbuilt tape measure from it (I didn't even know it had one until then!) and he snapped it off. He then handed the scales back to me with a look that said 'Unbelievable'.
He clearly thought I was going to strangle one of the cabin crew with it once on board.
Actually it would have come in very handy for the woman behind me who kept kicking my seat.
By the way, Fastlady (where are you now?) this was an excellent thread idea.
-
They take a tape measure from you but what about dental floss? Perfect for a quick garotte!
-
Now we know how your mind works Lotty ;) ;D
-
Hehe! - be afraid! ;)
-
Does the person who invented dental floss have a plaque on his house ? ;)

Thanks Jacqui, never seen that style before will look out for them when next in the UK. :)

Excellent! ;D
-
Bring a good British electric blanket as the Turkish ones are out of the 60's... ;D
-
Hamlet you can buy the same silicon poachers in Lakeland Plastics as well....we use them all the time
-
Well how come you haven't mentioned them before Fi? 8)
-
Because you've never asked...! Duh 8)

Should I bring my dongle ? Will I be able to get a turkish SIM card for it, or should I let my daughter have it and buy a new one when I get to Turkey?
-
The same rules apply to imported dongles as imported mobiles, register at the tax office or be cut off, although my eBay dongle worked for 3 holidays over 5 months until it was blocked. Now have new turkcell dongle with digital usage display!
