Title: An outsiders view.
Post by: tony jenkins on June 28, 2011, 12:14:10 PM
My thoughts:

I joined the forum, as I am coming to Calis first 2 weeks of August, with 'her indoors' and another couple.
I wanted to glean as much info as I could regarding places to eat, drink, relax and have some fun.
The info supplied by so many people means that I wont be saying 'found a great place on last day'  I now know where the good places are.

I have also PMSL on reading a few posts (Lance's wedding for one) and enjoyed post by KKOB (one liners) Tinks, Highlander, Desmartinson, Stoop, Scunner, Toky, Julesp, Jaquie, Nicola and many many more, and of course Colwyn. Supercabby being tempted by a flight on a Sunday and being there the day after, and then hearing his reports since then (brilliant)
That is what the forum is all about.

What I dont need is a Knbhead (they are not all expats) posting such a negative review that he even complains about the £10 at the airport and then says he has been to Turkey 3 times!!! And then says that a forum member looks like someone who 'touched up his daughter'
What a pig of a man.

I did not learn anything from his post, and that is why his comments are not wanted.

Rant over.  I look forward to meeting some of you and 'having a beer' in August

Kind Regards

Tony

An interesting subject Tony (glad I made it into the enjoyable posters list or I would have deleted it) - my thoughts on our first impression or "outsider's view" as you call it is quite complex. In building a community (which was my aim from day 1, not to build a forum), I think we walk the same tightrope as many similar sites do - that newcomers see the familiarity as a clique that they will never become part of - indeed when dummies are spat, that is the very accusation that often comes. I don't believe it to be true, anyone can join our gang, and relatively quickly - they just need to see that many members know each other in "real life" very well, and have done for years. There is no exclusive club here, you just throw yourself in and you're part of it  :)

The other side of CBF is that it isn't a clinical, fact based facility - if you want to know how to get to Saklikent we'll tell you, but if you can't spell it correctly we'll soon move aim to that :D - and that is part of the charm that is rarely seen elsewhere.

People who come to slate Calis know what they are entering into, much the same as wearing a Gerry Adams T shirt in a Loyalist pub! They come for a scuffle, they get one, they complain about being turned on by the clique. Sailor V.  8)

Great post, great reply.

Glad I was part of the positive input Tony, even if you did want me to take my cab over when I go lol.

I'd be interested to hear what Mark (Supercabby) thought of his arrival at CBF, he only joined this year (2011) but I would say quickly became part of the gang?

Great posts,
Don't worry about the cabs theres pleanty.
I was an avid watcher rather than poster as I too thought that these forums are cliquey (Spelling?).
Once you get to understand peoples personalities a bit I found it fine. I like to take the mick like a good number on here and so long as you can take it as well as receive it it makes for good reading for others. Other forums can be too stuffy removing posts because theyre off topic etc, makes it too clinical and far less enjoyable.

I think the rule here is that once the question has been answered, you can go as off topic as you wish :D

Tony makes a good point of having a beer.

Is there a bar where members meet? ie ???? afternoons in ???? bar. If you are passing drop in.

We used to have a CBF meet every Wednesday at the Bus Stop. Strangely, as the membership of CBF increased, the numbers attending decreased. Funny old World!

Well I'm still waiting for the "guvnor" to get my username right so am not quite bedded in yet!

I'm a chatterbox in real life & very used to internet forums having moderated a few over the last 5 years so found asking questions & getting in the flow of the banter quite easy, can see how some think it's a bit cliquey, every forum I've ever been on has that comment!

As for the purpose of the forum (which I presume is to offer information about Calis & surrounding areas & not just the current price of Efes :D) I have found it a total godsend & will go so far as to say I would have made some mistakes in my pending move without it! I have learnt where the best banking rate is (very important), it has put me in touch with various people who I would never have found without the forum (such as Tinkerman who will help me to help Animal Aid when I get settled as I intend to volunteer 1 day a week to keep me from getting bored, as if!).

I have been able to share some of my holiday snaps with favourable reviews which is nice, also being able to answer some of the more simple questions with my limited knowledge has been rewarding to me.

To sum up: Nice folk, interesting banter, quality & quantity of information is top class (irrespective of the differing opinions as you get that in any walk of life) & I genuinely feel my life has been better for my membership of CBF, thank you Keith for the hard work in keeping us going, I know from experience what time & effort running a forum takes & no, I don't want to be your next Mod, thank you anyway lol.

PS: How much is Efes in the Nil today? :D

I joined just over a couple of years ago to find out as much as I could about Calis Beach and the surrounding area, as we'd never been before.
I wrote down all the highly recommended restaurants, bars, trips, etc and when I arrived at the Oykun hotel, I felt I'd been in the resort already. I've loved being a member here and hope to be for a long time to come.
 ;)

I also joined a couple of years ago and I love it. As I have said before I may not be an avid poster but deffinately an avid watcher. I love the forum and It has been a godsend as far as where to eat and what to do, couldn't fault it. And I love sharing some of my photos on here too, and if I was ever to move to Turkey then it would be the first place I look to glean an much advice as possible in the many topics concerning just that. I love it and would be lost without my fix of CBF. :)

Is joining the forum a bit like when you move to a new area and first start going to the local pub? Generally everyone will welcome you and be as helpful as they can. Over time as they get to know you they will gradually welcome you more and more. You soon establish that there are a whole mixture of personalities that you grow accustomed to as you become part of the community. Over time you decide just how much involvement you wish to have or indeed you may be happy just to be a by-stander.

On the other hand if you arrive in said new pub with a very obnoxious, self opinionated attitude you will rub the locals up the wrong way and will quickly be shown the door.

Well that is how I have explained it in the past, the difference being that people don't generally go into a pub to tell the landlord and locals how cr4p they think it is - they appear to make the effort to do so when it comes to CBF - mainly because they are cowards who don't give their true identity - acting all hard because they know they can't be punched like they probably would be in the aforementioned pub.

I meet Rindaloo and her husband Dave, plus one or 2 friends at CAFE SOUL every wednesday between 12 and 2pm, Highlander joined us for the last 2 wednesdays, so if anybody wants to come down, then you will be welcome, it's as good a place as anywhere to start the ball rolling again. Alan

Tony, glad to have been of help and thanks for your feedback on the forum. I for one hadn't particularly noticed you were new to the forum although since your post I have noticed more new members are joining in the discussions.

I think sometimes there is an assumption that those that post a lot or have some friendly banter with one another do actually know each other personally too. Not true!

Often we have CBF members in the restaurant at the same time and I have been surprised to realise that they don't know each other and have certainly never met each other before.

While some are keen to be be introduced some can be quite shy and prefer to retain their anoymity.

All I can say is that if you join the discussions or ask genuine questions with goodwill then you will be warmly welcomed.  8)
