I have seen many of these in various rooms in the apartments in which we have stayed. What are they for ?. Be gentle if it's really obvious :-\

They have the wiring inside them for plugs. telephone etc.

There are electric cables behind them, so if you want to put in air-con or wall lights or something, you don't have to burst the plaster to access them

A recent invention, as not so long ago the wires just hung out of the hole.:D
