Title: Hot under the collar ?
Post by: Highlander on July 19, 2011, 23:03:08 PM
I understand that it's very hot at the moment (although I am still struggling with the idea of 56/58 C ;) - sorry Jim).

Nonetheless, when you're next sitting in a restaurant or bar and everything is not going exactly as you would like, spare a thought for the conditions that the locals are working under so that you can enjoy your holiday to the full.

Sure, it's their job, but as your glass of G&T slips through your hands due to the heat and/or humidity, try and imagine what it's like working in those conditions for long, long hours.

Yes must be awful working with hot food, digging etc in that heat.  No probs here in the uk, I've been sat under my sleeping bag with a fleece and bedsocks just to watch one television programme in comfort grrr !!

I don't know where those figures have come from John but the max in Calis had been 47.5 C. I was here in 2008 when it reached 56.5 and it is nothing like that.

Ken - it was around 93 when we were over and I really did struggle with the idea that it was 43 degrees (or nearly 50 %) higher.

I was there in 08 too.......remember walking around Paspatur and the waiters dragging us in to sit under the fans and supplying us with free drinks !   that was hot.  My daughter is in Kos at the moment and she tells me that it has reached 50 this week......

We always avoid July and August in Calis as it's far too hot for us, but last year the daughter of some friends of ours got married in Rhodes in August.  Not wanting to miss the wedding we booked just a week.  On our arrival at the apartments we were staying in we got chatting to the chap behind the bar and said how hot we thought it was, (it was probably about 40deg then)  he replied 'yes, too bloody hot!'.  And tomorrow?  'Tomorrow? - Tomorrow is oh my God!!'  :D

So yes, I do have a lot of sympathy for these guys working in the bars and restaurants in that heat because, even though they live there all year round I don't really think they get used to it and they can't just sit in the shade and cool off in the sea or pools like we can.

Yes it has been very hot and humid today eh Ken.  We managed to work up a sweat and that was sitting n the shade with a cool drink in front of us.  Ooh, that didn't come out right, LOL!!!!

Must say, some of these amazing temperatures make me wonder where the thermometer is.  I mean look here at today's temperatures http://www.intellicast.com/Local/Observation.aspx?unit=C&location=TUXX0081  nothing higher than 32 recorded today.  Those displays IN Fethiye, showing the heat and humidity, always seem high.  Where is the sensor for the demperarures they display??

There is a weather sensor place next to Zakum Restaurant My thermometer in the shade hit 42c today

Also the people who work and live here all year still feel the effects of the heat and the Turkish News Channels advise on how to cope when there is a heatwave, our bodies all work the same and it doesnt matter if you feel acclimatised or not It is still hot for us all.
I can assure you that all the barmen and waiters are feeeling as hot but only have jobs for 6 months so they have to grin and bare

Yes, but I was wondering if that sensor is actually linked up to the big illuminated displays.   It seems weird that there is such conflicting temperatures between the various weather sites and those two big signs and the people taking readings from home.  And, of course, the positioning of the thermometer is important.  We put ours in the shade on the veranda, on a thick post that isnt against the villa.  I am sure there still might be an element of reflected heat.  But its the best we can do.  Certainly the humidity can wreak havoc, especially in Fethiye itself.  I would hate to have to work in these temperatures.  Nightmare.

Firstly can i say that the readings were to prove a point that the only temperature that is meaningful is that taking in the shade.
The 58 Deg C. temperature i measured was in direct sun at 13:30 Hrs, at the same time the reading in the shade was 38 Deg C.
Accuracy of the sensors is fairly good so would expect them to be correct within a degree or so.

Yes, we have a thermometer in a tree in full sun, just to compare with our 'in shade' temperature.

On the basis that the locals are used to the heat, I should be used to the wet and the rain here in the UK  - even in July!! - well I can assure you I am not. ;) Even though I love the heat, and there is a limit to how much heat I can stand, I really appreciate how tough it must be to work in the extremes of the summer.

Please spare a thought for the people who will take part in the month of fasting which is coming up shortly.
I can't begin to imagine how hard this will be for them this year, with the really long days and the high temperatures!

Jim Fraser has taken the time to fully explain the temperatures. My apologies to him and everyone else for banging on about it. :-\

The British favourite conversation topic of 'the weather' lives on - I wonder what the Turkish favourite topic of conversation is?

Perhaps our Turkish friends and forum members would like to comment?

I think 'Weather' and 'Health' are international topics.

Well,

I guess like a lot of ex-soldiers I have done my share of walking in temperatures well of 40c with about 40Lbs on my back. Keeping the head covered and drinking as much water as you can I managed -- it wasnt easy and I was young!

You dont ever totally get used to it, after two years I was still very hot and uncomfortable in the height of summer, I doubt very much the poor waiter buzzing around the swimming pool with drinks in a big Hotel is having a good time!

I always have tried to treat staff especially nicely in the worst of the weather.

I even paid the Butler a little extra for carrying that 6ft square of turf around on his back for afternoon tea on the lawn --- for tyhose who have seen the spoof movie of Room with a view :D
