Title: Day trips from Calis
Post by: fahyt on July 24, 2011, 10:55:31 AM
I am returning to Calis after a seven year absence. I am hiring a car for the fortnight at the Harman hotel and would welcome suggestions for places to visit on day trips. I fondly remember trips to Cadianda (lycian ruins near uzumlu), Saklikent gorge and Kaya Koy. What should I not miss this time round? Irish heritage and very pale skin rules out long days on the beach.

Hi,
Saklikent, Tlos, Yaka Park which are all on the same route.  Yaka Park is a lovely fish farm in the mountains with a restaurant where you get really nice bbq fish.  Make sure you do your homework and get the right Yaka Park, there are fakes.  Kas is a lovely place down the coast, nice run and lovely to sit at a restaurant and have lunch overlooking the beach.   Also you can have a trip over to Rhodes. KayaKoy is good, but hot this time of year.  We are also pale skinned (Irish heritage too) so we don't sunbathe.  If you go to the Search facility on the top right hand side of this page you can use it to search for other ideas for days out.

As you have a car I would definitely recommend Patara beach and the ruins and I would take a trip to Dalyan to take a boat trip to see the Rock Tombs .Could also take  the mud bath while you are there.

Take a trip to Marmaris, then you will realise how truly wonderful Calis is!

I agree with Hubblebubbles on Dalyan. Depending on how many of you and the ages, try and arrange an over night hotel.
I was there last week, to me....there is like a little of everything there that this area has to offer. A few noisy young bars like Hisaronu, a little bit of Ovacik, Fethiye and Calis all rolled into one. Some excellent places to eat by the river and also the more cheap and cheerful lokantas and a great selection of bars etc. Very international there, and was also busy at night, Dalyan is certainly not losing out for tourists.

Agree with Toky suggestion............. Marmaris and Gumbet ... The only two places I had been to before.
Definately worth a visit............ This will, as Toky said, enhance your experience of Calis.
To think I had nearly written off Turkey completely, based on the past experiences.  . .
If it had'nt been for accidently finding this forum, we would never have gone back............
Phew!........... that was a close shave.

Fahyt.....I'm also thinking of hiring a car for a week to explore the area.  ....Did you hire directly from the hotel?

Col, We had three days / nights staying in the lovely Dalyan in mid June. It may be busy now ( expected in late July August ) but those appealing  riverside restaurants were all struggling big time when we were there. One establishment only had one table of customers  throughout the whole of May:( !!  No, Dalyan,   like all the other  Turkish resorts are reporting a downturn of Brit visitors  this year.
Empty seats on planes from B,ham to Dalaman again reported even as recent as saturday 23rd July .

I am an invererate chicken and I worried that I would not understand any car hire contract I sign in Turkey so I booked through Holiday Autos in the UK. I clicked the Holiday Autos link through the Quidco site so I get a 9% cash back through quidco. The total cost was £402 for a small automatic and this included CDW including damage to screen, tyres, That's £29 per day and no charge for transfers.

Fahyt, that seems reasonable to me.

actually thats quite expensive for car hire.  we pay on average £18 - £20 per day, using Pandora.  Excellent service and the contract is explained in English when the car is delivered for you.  Excellent pick up / drop off service at the airport too.

I would also visit Dalyan - lots of nice restaurants to explore, a boat trip around the reed beds, Lycian tombs to wonder at and plenty of wildlife to discover.  or...take the coastal round round from Olu Deniz - to Kabak, beautiful scenery and several places to stop of for a picnic / exploration.  Lovely little restaurant in Kabak for lunch if you don't fancy a picnic......beaches to refresh you too !

I paid 100euros (don't know why it was priced in euros & didn't ask!) for a week with unlimited mileage whan I last was in Turkey, this was a collect & drop off at Dalaman airport so not local to Calis, fyi.
