Title: Bringing home the Bacon
Post by: loz on August 31, 2011, 21:36:20 PM
Flying from Gatwick and the new all singing all dancing security systems I was wondering about bringing out Bacon, obviously packed in hold luggage, now how much can we get away with? Anyone taken any to Turkey recently from Gatwick?

Last year we brought out 2.5kg,and 5kg cheese, I just want to get a little more adventurous ;) 5kg bacon.

I don't think there are any restrictions on taking food out of the UK - I may be wrong but I've had my cases searched - even hand luggage - and cheese, bacon, sausages, you name it physically removed, identified and returned. We had one bag searched and when the 6 large blocks of cheddar were found and taken out they said "Oh, cheese! On the scanner we thought it might be cartons of fruit juice". Cheddar returned, pulse returning to nearer normal, on our way  :)

I wasn't sure, or old-timers setting in and can't remember what we usually do, I do know we can't take Turkish Sausage back to the UK.

We go to cash 'n' carry and buy 2.5kg bacon £5-6 and 2+kg cheese for £4 I just can't resist at those prices, catering size items for friends restaurant, bloody good job we have most clothes out there!

We took packs of bacon, butter and cheese out of Gatwick airport a month ago - no problems at all.  All packaged in a cool bag in our suitcase!   :)

Never had a problem from Manchester.
We always freeze the bacon, cheese and sausage when we buy them. Just before leaving for the airport we remove them and place them in an insulated freezer bag.On arrival at the apartment they are all still frozen.

Always travel from Manchester and brought a few cheese rounds over in hand luggage - 4.5kg. Got the odd comment and suprise from staff but never had a problem. If the bacon is sealed you shouldnt need to freeze it, i would freeze loose cut though.

Tuna, last year I purchased one of those huge cater tins of Tuna 10.90TL now 25 crips! I know things are getting expensive in Turkey but not hikes like this, that is just crazy.

The reason for asking what can be brought out to Turkey, I was flipping through TV channels a program popped up on airports and a few passengers were having food items taken off themI, not watched all the program did not know where they were holidaying or what year the program was made, I thought maybe they had changed the rules, when we lived there friends were often bringing out to us bacon and cheese (the usual must have).

Mickey Mouse, Tins of tomatoes? please? say you jest[:o)]:D

I think the people you saw at the UK airport were probably arriving Loz rather than departing.

That would probably make sense, that is what happens when not fully watching the program.

Back Bacon, 25 tl for one kilo. Streaky slightly cheaper.

1.2 Kilo , bonn fillet for 54 TL. Divided into three for meals for the wife and I. ( and enought left over each time for the dog.

Eggs , 2.5 for 10.

Not to bad if you shop around.
