They weigh from about 15 kilos and they cost anything from 200 TL upwards, depending on quality and features.

I'm sure you can get them in the UK. You might be able to get one in the Harringey, Hackney, Tottenham areas of London where there's a huge Turkish community. A couple of the brand names to look-out for are HÜRTAS and SÜREL. Soba is a generic name.

Sue, do you have heating in your Turkish house? we need to sort something out that is better (and cheaper) than using the air con units. I am not sure what would be the best solution for our types of house?

We have electric fire in lounge we use when it gets chilly and electric blankets for beds. Dont fancy soba as dont fancy decorating every year as they can be very smoky, mobile gas heaters probabley cheapest option.

Halogen heaters are apparently the cheapest - you can get the large ones on a stand and they don't half knock out heat. UFO is the brand name I was told offered the best quality/price/running costs/heat. Unlike air con heating, the heat tends to stick around after they have been switched off.

They're only smokey if they're not properly piped and ventilated.

We bought ours about 3 years ago. Its Finish or Swedish and was about 800 then. They are more expensive now and you can even get them with a back boiler for hot water and radiators.

These can all be purchased in UK . You dont want to carry this one back, it's cast Iron and although the smallest in its rangr, I cannot lift it by myself.

If you take a Turkish brown one with you I think you will find that all insurance is null and void. They dont build them to BS or Euro standards Im afraid.

Hi I bought a new but a basic sobe with all the outlet pipe, spare bucket, tongy things, back board to sheild the wall and base all for 180 tl last winter in Gulukbasi, they are warm but not the most convenient or cheapest form of heat, we do like roasting chestnuts on them though
I use a UFO, in my bedroom when its very cold, and in the living room in the daytime while the other half is at work, he sees to the sobe when he gets home, and these really warm the rooms and are cheap to run
I found with the calor gas heater, which I bought the 1st year here, I was having to buy a minimum of 2 bottles gas a week and they dont throw out hardly any heat

We bought a woodburning stove from PUS in Fethiye.  They import them from the UK - more expensive than a soba but wouldn't be without it

I like thge idea of the wood burner Chriisie but I don't think we have a chimney in our place, there is someting in the corner of the living room that looks like a flue. Will need to look closer.

We had to have a chimney built on to the outside of the house. This was done PUS's builders.  You may be ok where you are George. As you say you will need to check it out when you get here.
