Hello all.
I wonder if anyone can answer this for me.
I have in the UK a 3 Mi Fi dongle on pay as you go, this runs with a sim card on the 3 network.
Is it possible to run this in Turkey with a Turkish sim? I don't know if the dongle itself will be compatable with their system or not, and if not can it be made to be compatable.
Cheers
Mark.

Based on what I understand of the 3 network I "think" it wont be compatible as the only networks available are Turkcell & Vodafone however I'm unaware if either of them can "unlock" a dongle. You can buy a dongle in Turkey, reading this forum the appx cost seems to be 100tl. Guess you can take it & try, nothing ventured!
Edit: Just rung my local phone unlocking specialist on your behalf, he can't do a dongle & knows of no-one else who can, just fyi.

thanks for the info,
Mark

Avea also have dongles - I think mine is on the 3g network but not sure . Will check later and confirm.
-
they are compatible, but need to be unlocked first.
google threw up:

Use at your own risk...
this needs to be done in the UK and then the mifi registered with Turkcell (just like a UK mobile) and a Turkcell sim purchased.

I have news!!!
Now there is a coincidence, superpp. just got the dongle unlocked by a guy over the internet..... £7.00 and should as he says be up and running with a Turkish sim card when I get out in October, this is a great option for internet connection if all works well as you can connect up to 5 items such as phones laptop ds etc, basicaly a stand alone wireless router that is portable and just needs to be charged and will last up to 8 hours between charges,
Cost in uk £39 on 3 pay as you go for the unit Plus unlock fee and what ever the sim in turkey will cost but seems reasonable to me.
I will let you know how I get on in Octber.
I hope this is of help to someone as i have had great info from this site, big up the CBF.

Sorry I was wrong! (Oh & I forgot Avea too!)
Maybe it's time I retired :)
I did find a wi-fi modem for a dongle on Ebay a while back if that helps at all.
-
Checked my dongle this morning, it is 3G on Avea and works fine.
-
Just a quick update.
Visited Turkcell in Fethiye, registered the dongle, bought a sim card and now have 4gb download avaiable for 19 lira. what a bargain. :D
Hope this helps,

Turkish vodafone are currently doing unlimited internet for 7tl a month. We hooked the sim up to our computer and it worked fine, though a little slow.

Hi - I have a 3 payg dongle that I used for a month last year.
We are over for a full year in January and I thought I would be using wi-fi or numerous trips to internet cafes'
Are you saying that I can get this unlocked via the internet in the UK
Then buy a Turkish sim (how much is that?) and then get 4gb for 19 lira (I expect that the 4gb has to be used within a month?)
That sounds a really useful option!!! :)
-
Now let me see if I understand this:
If I buy a dongle that works with a Turkish sim card (3g) then if I buy one of these I can get wifi in my property (assuming a 3g connection is available) for 19ytl for 4gb per month? If so it looks a goer to me:

I don't hang about - unlocked and tested (for £3.82) my payg 3 dongle in readiness :) However I do think the 19 tl for 4gb sounds understated unless it is a contract?
Has anyone else had this sim only 4GB for 19 tl ?
What is the best deal for 1 gb pay as you go sim ?
-
39 tl for a top of my 4G dongle so no use for TV or movies ( Turkcell Vinn)
-
I also bought an unlocked dongle off the internet months ago in readiness. It is a vodafone dongle but it is unlocked and without a sim. I took it to the turkcell shop to have it registered and buy a sim card 6 weeks ago and they said yok- take it to vodafone. Vodafone wanted 70 odd lira to provide a sim and 7 lira to register plus 39 lira for 4 wotsits for the month. needless to say I didnt bother as having not used the dongle i didnt want to pay in excess of 100 lira for something that may not work. Could it be they have misunderstood me in the turkcell shop or do I have the wrong dongle as it is not a Mi-Fi. ( just googled Mi-fi as I havent a clue) :-\
UPDATE. been back to turkcell shop today with my unlocked english dongle. Registered and new turkcell sim 29 lira.Plus 29 lira for 1GB or 39 lira for 4GB download allowance for month. Still no wiser as to why they said no 6 weeks ago though.

stoop, you understand correct, I also used UK tv access with the dongle and it gave me faultless tv streaming. I can only speak for myself but am well impressed. 8)

Ribeye - many thanks - that is really good feedback - but are you sure the 4 gb is 19 tl - everyone I speak to says it is 39 tl
Does the UKTV eat up the 4 gb very quickly?
They reckon it is 10 hrs of browsing per 1 gb but I thought streaming used more - does anyone know roughly what you would get??

Ian, yes I paid this for the 4gb just last week at the Turkcell shop just a few yards up from the HSBC on the same side, I think there is a acooter shop next door. there was however the purchase of the sim that I think was 39 tl but this is a one off payment and after then just pay for the top up of gb.
-
Ribeye - many thanks
-
Ian,Ribeye.
It is 39 TL to top up the 4 gb which is valid for one month.
When you go on line the VINN (page) will show you what to have left and to what date. I find if I try downloading a movie or wathing TV shows I can use my 4 gb within a week. This makes it a very expensive alternative.
However I do all the web beousing on the dongle at home and when we are out and about with free wyfy, to down load movies then.
I actually paid around 150 for my first month with the dogle. (Every time you top up a new month starts)
Hope this helps

Turkcell currently have a promotion on the Vinn Dongle 99tl. This includes Dongle, Sim Card and 4 gb. There is no contract necessary and you just top up at the end of your month or as required. I do however, find it a bit slow!
