Title: Bring back the cane!
Post by: tinkerman on September 16, 2011, 06:13:15 AM
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2038030/Bring-cane-say-half-parents-Cameron-pledges-restore-order-schools-following-riots.html

49% of parents want the cane brought back and 53% are against it :-\

I am all in favour of the teachers being in control of their schools and think bringing back the cane would be a step forward, I also think special hardline schools should be set up for serious repeat offenders, bootcamp style.

What say you?

I agree. At the minimum teachers should be allowed to restrain a unruly child.

There was a case in the paper yesterday of a girl ignoring a teachers request for an explanation around some misbehaviour in the canteen, she ignored his requests to stay behind and walked away, when he followed and blocked her way she again pushed by him. I suspect things then got a little heated but it is Joe him who is facing legal action over this child

I have to admire the lady who stormed the school bus with a baseball bat to threaten her sons bullies

I for one would not like the cane brought back, or the strap or the slipper or any other article which could be used to beat, slap or thrash children.

This was the topic of a Radio 5 phone-in this morning. From some of the contributors I got a vision of a queue of men eagerly rolling up their sleeves and ready to get stuck straight in with the thrashing of children "Line 'em up - we're ready!". Not an attractive prospect.

Were it a realistic picture that you were painting, then it would not be an attractive prospect but I do not believe that the teaching profession is full of sadists.  I believe that there is a place for corporal punishment.

I would advocate a hand slapped backside for kids, the cane for senior school kids and the birch for juveniles, footie hooligans etc[:(!] Oh I nearly forgot, hanging for murderers [:(!]
p.s. I could go on a lot more about sex offenders!!!

It never did me any harm & I feel sure there are many on here that will agree.
I say bring it back

"It never did me any harm & I feel sure there are many on here that will agree"

Agreed, but it didn't do me any good either, just made me resentful and improved my attitude
to school and teachers not one jot, but I wore the badge of honour with pride, so, some consolation there.
Mind you, the ruler round the back of the bare legs, the blackboard rubber winging its way to my head or the constant painful tug of the right ear as a means to lift me out of my chair didn't do me any harm either but it did instill a hatred of authority which I am proud to say I carry to this day. Sadistic teachers, oh yes, for sure.
I don't thrash children with sticks so why on earth should I allow someone else too.
:(:(:(

Did your classroom antics disrupt the lessons so that the less able were unable to get a decent education then ?

Irrelevant question, as the legalized brutality made no difference one way or another. 8)

On the contrary, I found that short sharp punishment kept the class in order and this allowed lessons to proceed. Pupils who were allowed to disrupt the development of those who wanted to learn were a menace to those whom they 'jokingly' called friends.

On the contrary, I was forced to learn the whole of Matthew Chapter three " In those days came John the baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea" because I feinted in the dinner queue, It neither stopped me feinting or made me a christian, a rather pointless exercise at the hand of a very sadistic teacher, as irrelevant to me as caning was.

I don't think the cane should be brought back, beating a child doesn't make it learn I think it probably teaches them it's ok to give someone a hiding. :(

"A woman, a dog and a walnut tree
The more you beat them the better they be"

(English Proverb, 16th century)

I wonder how many would agree with one or more of these.

Don't you be so cruel to my walnut tree :o, I'm going to report you to my local "Save the Tree" inspectorate[:(!]:D

Ah. but you have to be cruel to be kind. And a good hiding never hurt any child tree.

I honestly don't think its all about BEATING (as in black and blue), but it IS about getting kids to take discipline seriously.  Kids should know that there is a price to pay for disrespecting authority.  This begins (or should) in the home.

yes of course your right linda, nobody mentioned thrashing and beating apart from those against it, we are talking about the degenerates in secondary education that interupt the teaching of pupils that want to learn,a couple of swishes of the cane on each hand and if that doesn't work it's off to boot camp.

Yes I agree Rindaloo, children need boundaries which they SHOULD learn at home and most children do learn their boundaries and I bet it wasn't with a cane!

no, sometimes it takes something a little harsher to get the message across and sometimes from another source.

Oh, we're not talking about beating children; we are talking about swishing degenerates. That makes everything different.

Colwyn, I hold you in very high esteem and bow to your superior knowledge,
I know the cane is not the ultimate answer but indispline is a very serious problem in our schools at this moment in time and much of it stemming from bad parenting and lack of family values, I am sure you will agree something has got to be done to the boy/girl who can swear and push teachers around at their will, What would your solution be?

So you weren't actually beaten ?  Did you feint to the left or to the right or did you just faint ? I guess nobody fainted in Matthew Chapter 3, otherwise you would never have made the mistake. ;)

My daughter in law teaches teenagers and I think its a bit much when she has to have a panic alarm to call for help.

I got caned at school, I also got a clout at home and it did me no harm whatsoever. I believe that the return of corporal punishment at all levels is necessary in our current sad state of affairs.

Yes Im also pro caneing provided it is controlled, ie a visit to the headmasters office after discussion and not the teacher allowed to just thrash out in frustration
I do remember my Geography Teacher Mr Thomas( Verdin Grammar Winsford ) who had a blackboard rubber attatched to his briefcase by a long chain, this was so that he could throw it at a pupil and then reel it back in! Whenever a member of another classroom came to borrow the rubber he would hand over his briefcae
I did see some bullying of pupils in my old school, it seeemed at times that one boy in the class would be picked on by a certain teacher just because the Teacher was in a mood.

OK Tinkerman, if we're going to take this seriously it is a rather large and complex topic to be dealt with in a forum posting. Nevertheless, I'll start it off with a few thoughts in a new thread and see if it leads to a rather more constructive dialogue than this one (my own comments no doubt having contributed to its unconstructiveness).
