Title: Fethiye has a Specialist Eye Hospital
Post by: nichola on September 19, 2011, 15:41:29 PM
I have been putting off getting glasses for reading for years but the other day I decided to visit what I had heard was a reputable opticians. Off we went together to some back street Eye Doctor who using his antiquated machinery "tested" my eyes.

He then proceeded to test out some glass lens popping one in after the other so fast I barely had time to blink. He then got quite stroppy when I told him I couldn't tell him whether one lens was better than another.

He then pronounced I need not one but two pairs of glasses; one for distance and one for reading. Now I have about as perfect vision as you can get apart from reading small print in a low light so I was not impressed and couldn't work out in exactly what circumstances I would need to wear distance glasses.

Nonetheless I left with two prescriptions for two pairs of glasses. I paid my 40TL to the opticians - the "test" is free if you buy their glasses but I could return and get my 40TL back if I decided to buy there.

Subsequently I discovered that there is in fact a specialist eye hospital in Fethiye - on the Antalya road heading out of Fethiye located just on the left hand side of the road a few metres past the entrance to Karacula marked by a sign that bridges the road; just look for the sign on the left - Kartal Goz.

This morning I went along, paid 60TL for a comprehensive set of eye tests using all the latest technology and lo and behold all I need is a pair of reading glasses.

The nursing staff and consultant were very pleasant and all speak English, I was seen immediately and I left feeling confident about the results and satisfied that the back street cowboy and his cohorts at the opticians weren't going to benefit from an unnecessary pair of glasses that would have proved useless probably leading me to going back and getting another third and unnecessary pair because the first ones don't work - because they wouldn't would they if I don't need them in the first place.

I would highly recommend to anyone with eye problems that they avoid the opticians in town with their "free" eye tests and spend 60TL and get the job done properly by professionals with modern equipment and who aren't set to make a small fortune with their cosy deals with each other.

There is an optician next to the eye hospital which is where I plan to start looking for one pair of suitable glasses.

Some of the Opticians actually take you to Kartal Goz for an eye test. Fi got a pair of glasses from the opticians on the main street just in front of the Mozaic in Dec last year.  They took her to KG for the eye test before she even chose which glasses she wanted.  Too late now I know but others will benefit from both our postings I hope.

I go to the eye specialist at the Esnaf.  I have high eye pressure so have to go at least twice a year and he uses modern equipment and speaks some English too.

i can also speak very highly of Kartel Goz, my grandaughter had problems with both her eyes. Her opticion in Fethiye kept prescribing differant drops all to no avail, on recomendation we went to Kartel after testing her eyes  we were told she has Blopheritis, now with the right treatment her eyes are so much better.

As I used to work as an optical advisor in the Uk I know how important it is to have a full eye health check, not just a check for your prescription as many do here
I used the one opposite the entrance to the Tuesday Market above the supermarket on the otherside of the canal, when I 1st came here, is that one now gone? Ive never noticed, they too did a full eye check and were very good. Im not sure if they were Kartal Goz, maybe they are the same people and have moved
My son needed new glasses and went to Alice Optik  who advertised a free sight test, around the same time, They took him to the same place

Dycedon when i went last year you had all the tests done here in Fethiye but you had to go to Istanbul for the laser treatment but that might have altered now as they were hopeing to be able to do the laser treatment in Fethiye in future.I would have no hesitation in reccomending them. They do all the tests, eye test, thickness of you cornea ect and if you are not suitable they will tell you. There is no chance of them doing it just to get your money if your not suitable.

I had a cataract done at Kartal Goz and i had excellent treatment and the place was spotless and
very very friendly.  I would highly recommend it and wouldnt dream of going anywhere else for
my eyes. I dont think it was expensive, i think it was just over a 1,000 lira for one eye but that
was over a year ago. The after service was excellent and have had no problems whatsoever with the
eye

I'm sure I've seen an advert for Laser in Fethiye.  I've met three people in recent weeks who have had it done and I'm getting tempted again  :-)

I wonder if it would be helpful to create a list on this topic of the opticians that do take people to the Specialist Eye Hospital Kartal Goz for an eye test.

Eric can you remember or check the name of the opticians Fi used?

I also forgot to add that the test by the "quack" for my reading glasses is also wrong so I am extra glad that I sought a second opinion.

I went to the opticians by the Kartal Goz and they didn't have so much choice but I did get prices to use as a bench mark.

I have now purchased reading glasses and new polarized sun glasses from Alice opticians (opposite Migros in the town centre) and prices compared favourably once I had negotiated some discount.

From doing some research last year, anyone who advertises laser eye surgery will take you to either Antalya, Izmir or Istanbul for the actual treatment.  The eye doctor in Esnaf will take you to Antalya for the treatment but he gives you the check-ups etc here in Fethiye.
