On friday night at twenty past eight, we nipped out to get a meal and watch the football at the Barbella restaurant in Calis. At twelve fifteen, we walked back through our door to find that the house had been ransacked. The thieves had tried to break in through a bedroom door. the rear main door and apart from breaking the looks, were unsuccessful but they got in through a disused kitchen door after ripping away the shutters, that were well fastened, breaking open the locked and padlocked metal doors, the kitchen door and pushing away a big Ariston fridge freezer which covered the lot.
They took our English money, Bank cards, passports, drivers licence, flight tickets, lap top, jewellery, and other stuff.
Luckily we had enough Turkish money to pay the 750 lira for emergency passports and a few Lire left to get us through to the twentieth, when we fly home.
We are very lucky to have some good friends here and Andy and Pauline Trent (Tinkerman and wife) have been invaluable to us as have Judith and Ali.
I came over this time to chill out as part of my recovery from open heart surgery, earlier this year but now, I can't wait to get back home.
If anybody knows any of the guys that did us or if they should visit the forum in their quest for victims, I hope their fingers drop off and the go back to the holes from which they crawled. For all the honest folk out there, we have learned that security is nothing more than a bother to thieves and we are now thinking of leaving here for good.
Sorry to be such a moaner but this is the second time that we have been done.

Horrendous experience. So sorry to hear this story. Keep well.

For those of you who don't know Barrie and Shirley, Barrie is the artist that donates paintings to the three c's charity every year for auction.
They are a wonderful couple and do not deserve to be put through this trauma, I haved watched them suffer over the last few days and my heart goes out to them, I really hope its not the last we see of them.
The police were on the ball and did their job, Barrie and Shirley were not allowed back into their house til gone 4am because the forensics were in there, then have to wait til Monday to go up to the police station in Gunlukbasi to sort out a list of items stolen at then to the Consulates office to sort out emergency passports and then on to the insurance office, Thank you Nikkie for all your help.
I wish I knew who was responsible[:(!]

A terrible thing for anyone to have to endure....and (at the risk of having my head bitten off again) seems to be more prevalent at this time of year!
I sincerely hope that Barrie & Shirley don't let this scum put them off returning to what is, on the whole, a fantastic place with great people. My heart goes out to you both....
-
Barrie and Shirley, Pete and I are horrified and really sorry to hear of your ordeal. We have been away for a few days and only got back yesterday afternoon and as we did not have internet access whilst away, this is the first that we have heard of this. It must have been awful for you and very traumatic and certainly the last thing that you need after your recent health problems.
I know it is a bit late in the offering but if there is anything that we can do to help at all please let us know - anything at all. Thank goodness that you had the help of Andy and Pauline and other friends to get you through when it happened.
You are one of the nicest and most generous couples we have met during our time in Calis and for anyone to do this to you deserves to be locked up for a long, long time.
-
Barrie & Shirley,
Really sorry to hear about your terrible ordeal, I know at first hand how you feel and what anger you have towards these scum, but step back and take a breath, it sounds like the police have done a good job and even if they don't get caught for this, they may well get them in the future and link them back to your robbery and pay the price.
Get yourself an alarm and don't let these people drive you away. I do wish you both all the very best.
-
So very sorry to hear this has happened to you and your wife, particularly whilst you are trying to recover from major surgery. Please try to not let it drive you away, unfortunately it seems to be as another member said "that time of year" when the burglaries, attacks etc start happening. I am of late very wary of putting to much info on the internet not so much on CBF as I have encountered nothing but fantastic info, good humor and lots of banter, however I have become very wary of social networking sites as I realise I have been a victim of "grooming",by a Turkish person and can not believe how easily it was done, I now do not put to much info anymore on these "sites"
Really hope you and your wife recover in time from your ordeal and the people for doing this get caught and brought to justice.
-
Very sorry to hear this news, I sincerely hope that these scum get what is due and you get a positive result.
Friends spent 2-3 nights in Hisaronu for a change this month, each thought the other had lockd the balcony door to the villa, on their return were horrified to find that not only was the door unlocked but latched wide open leading to the lounge, lucky for them no one entered.
-
I feel so terribly sorry for you Barrie and Shirley.....it's an awful thing to happen anytime, but even worse for you as you Barrie were recovering following your heart surgery.
I hope you are able to put this behind you as much as possible because for every piece of scum there are many very kind and decent people which you found out after the event.
Best wishes for the future.

So sorry to hear this news,it does seem to be the time of year as a villa near us was done on Monday evening. Same sort of thing the people had just gone into Calis for a meal returned two hours later to find villa ransacked, they also had passports taken along with money & jewelery.
-
Where do you live Angelic?
-
I am so sorry this has happened and I hope the culprits are soon caught. It seems the police are being really professional with this break-in.
One of our neighbours had a break-in last year and the usual things were taken T.V. D.V.D etc., but also the contents of the fridge.
We brought over a really easy fix alarm from B.&.Q.(about £20.00) and also an outside wall mounted box with flashing red light. We also have a floor safe in which we keep passports and valuables.
Even with these things installed we cannot guarantee that the place will not be burgled, but most Burglers are opportunitist, so they look for the easy entry.n If they see a complication they will often move to the next place.
-
It is so sad when things like this happen, I hate the thought of anyone being burgled. Not only is there the stress of the burglary itself, but then everything else that comes after it.
The police did a very good job on the night of the burglary, and then on Monday too regoing over the statement and the inventory of stolen items.
Barrie and Shirley are such a lovely couple. I too hope that this doesn't stop them staying here in Turkey.
Tinx I was glad that I could help Barrie and Shirley, shame that I met them under those circumstances though.
-
Andy we live on Akarca just up from the Calis market corner shop. The villa that was robbed is at the end of our avenue.

Sadly not in Barrie and Shirley's case:(

Sorry to not have read and replied to your posts before but tonight we were invited to have a meal with with Chrissie and Peter and they kindly ley me use their computer to view your comments and reply to them. Thank you all for your good wishes and now that we are one week on, things do look a little different and we now now have the winter to mull over what we intend to do. One thing that we have found is, some people who we thought of as aquaitenses have turned out to be good friends and others, who we thought of as good friends, are no more than a good night out and us to them, no more than a bit of an ambarrssement at this time. Calis is still our number one place and we have still got time to go back to thinking that. Thanks everybody, there are still lots of great people here and I honestly don't think that we would have got the same response back in the U.K
-
We are back home now and able to look back at what happened to us and whilst it doesn't help the situation, we can get a better idea of what we intend to do in the future. Now, we have to start chasing up the banks etc so that we can get body and soul back on track. Thanks to all those who were there for us, they know who they are and how grateful we are to them and thanks for all your concern. Barrie and Shirley.
-
take care both of you, see you next year!
-
This is horrendous. I live alone and was shaken when I heard that someone had been the target of bag snatchers but this incident is absolutely awful. I too hope that the culprits get their just deserts but no doubt they will be on the look-out for their next victims. These low life harm their victim but also the local community. My best wishes to you and a prayer that these bstrds are caught. Unfortunately no compensation is available for mental anquish.
-
Baznshir, if i may ask, were all your valuables in a safe, we always keep everything in the safe but if they wanted to get into it i suppose they probably would, sorry to hear about your plight.

Im sorry for what happened, but i dont think there is a :Time of year: anymore, it seems to be happening all year round. In the winter its because they have no work, or the builders :-\ In the summer its the workers from the East [?] You get to the stage that your scared to go out :(
-
Our nightly routine before we leave our place in Calis. Lock all metal gates on windows, put all valuables in the safe. Put on Burglar alarm and all outside lights for the villa.

Yes I agree, up in Hisaronu you can still leave your front door open all day and night!

Are we approaching page 5 Keith[?]:D
-
I'm no expert Steve but I believe Page 3 is often considered by those in the know to be "approaching page 5" yes...
;)
-
Not so sure that it is sensible to tell all and sundry that all your valuables are tucked away in the safe. Those interested will just find the safe and bring the appropriate kit instead of wasting time on turning other stuff over.
-
I would rather "all in sundry" know we have an alarm, security gates and a safe than no security measures. We have the same valuables as everyone else who comes on holiday. Camera, Passport, Money. I suspect that even the dopey thieves will know this is what they will find in every tourist property. So why come prepared with safe breaking kit to our place when there are so many places with no security grills, no burglar alarms and valuables just left lying about the property?
-
I have to agree Jacqui, we fitted an alarm after we got burgled and use it all the time. It gives us piece of mind as we were broken into while we were asleep. My theory is why break into a place that is alarmed when they can break into a neighbours that isnt.
