It is possible to buy on Amazon a smaller lighter Kindle for £89 with Wi-Fi and a 5 way controller or for £149 a Kindle with 3g + Wi-Fi and a keyboard.
The other main differences are the length of battery time - one month vs two months and the amount of storage 2GB vs 4GB.
Does anyone have any advice about which one would be the better purchase particularly re the 5 way controller and if the differences justify the price difference?
Thanks
-
The screen size of the smaller one is the same, and that for me is the important bit, the battery charge life on the larger one may be better but when will anyone ever need two months between charges, and the smaller 2GB memory is still a load of books, so no great loss there.
So if its only to be used as an Ereader then the wee ones more than ample - wish it had been available last year.
-
i just bought a wifi kindle 111.00 pound,i thought dont need 3g over here i will just download the books at home on wifi
i often turn the pages by mistake so i think a smaller one would be harder to hold and maybe cramp your hand
-
I'm waiting to see if the prices tumble now that they've announced the launch of the new colour Kindle Fire.
Amazon's basic Kindle is used for reading eBooks. The Kindle Fire will combine this feature with the ability to play music, films and games and surf the internet. (Daily Mail)

i know if i had something that done other things than read books i would get to distracted so i like just a kindle for my reading but it does take me ages to choose books from amazon :-( i am thinking to maybe make a book club on face book or on here for recommendations
-
I'm aware that you're asking about a Kindle but I've just bought a Nook (first edition) and absolutely love it.
It can read many types of books (including pdf and epub) and it has wifi.
I've bought it new through Sahibinden.com and only paid 240 TL for it.

Say for arguements sake a friend of yours had a file which contained 955 ebooks in .mobi format and you wanted a copy of it because you know that this is the format that the Kindle uses. If that friend was a member of CBF you'd probably contact them via their profile wouldn't you?:D
-
[?][?][?]
-
Work it out Eric! Or contace me via my profile and I'll go through it with you step by step. :)
-
I'm in the states at the moment and the base kindle is the equivalent of £50 here

I have a view quest e reader which I love. The screen is like a mobile phone screen and I can't read it all in the sunlight - however, it is great for reading in bed! It also has an sd card slot so can play movies etc on it. Having just spent a week trying to read it in Turkey in the sun, I now want a Kindle!!! I was thinking the 3g one would be a great idea for downloading daily newspapers in our apartment (we have no internet there etc) - am I right?

The question is basically which Kindle to buy and you post about file sharing, hence the question!
-
Wow - someone goes off topic, that never usually happens on here does it? :)
Ok let me put it another way - If you want 955 Kindle ebooks for nothing you'll have to send me a 2GB memory stick and a postage paid return envelope. Contact me via my profile.
-
Ah, now I get it...you are SELLING and ADVERTISING on this topic:-\
-
Possibly neither Eric - sounds to me like a friendly offer.
-
Which part of "for nothing" is confusing you? I'm simply offering those members who own Kindle an opportunity to get 955 books for free by sending me a memory stick and I'll copy the books on to it and send it back them. There is no selling and no advertising taking place, I'm not asking for any payment or reimbursement other than a postage paid return envelope and any time that I spend doing the copying and posting is as a favour to fellow CBF members. Got it now?

On the topic of "is paying extra for a 3g kindle worth it" I'd say definately yes. The experimental browser function gives you free internet access, if fact I am on this forum writing this response on my kindle. As a side note, the US and UK cover different areas to different levels of capability. According to the amazon 3g coverage maps, the UK covers turkey to a high level, the US covers it to a medium level - most of the kindles you can buy on sahibiden are from the US. I'm really glad I spent the extra money as I like to check emails whenever rather than having to find a wireless hotspot, I also like that it is free! The new colour kindle has wireless but not 3g.
-
Thank you Nichola
I thought a kindle was a device to read books and wondered why there was a keypad on it.
After reading this thread I am completely lost and wondering if I should get one. If only to find out what it does.
Steve I may be in touch ;) ;)
-
OK, my apologies. Too suspicious at times.
-
Interesting subject as we are thinking of getting one each (yes including Mr Suspicious)and have been told that because 2 of us want a Kindle that we should only buy them in one name and then we can file share each others books. If we bought in individual names we would not be able to do file sharing. Again we've been told that 3G seems to be best as you can download from anywhere in the world rather than having to find a WiFi hotspot.I have WiFi at home..
Then you meet someone who has a ereader(not Kindle) that tells you not to bother with Kindle as you're restricted to use only Amazon books????/
Then another person tells you that if you use a free program called Calibre to convert epub or similar to mobi you can get them onto your Kindle.....so you can download from any e publisher including WHS
Then they announce the Fire just to add more confusion????
All I want to do is read a electronic book and have the widest range of choice I can get!
Now thinking that the old format of book sharing was and is still pretty darn good....lol
-
If you want to have the widest range of choice, you'd be better off with an e-reader that's not a Kindle.
You can find thousands of e-books for free on the net.
With a Kindle you would need to convert them.
Not a difficult task but the question is whether you would want to bother with it when you can read them without hassle on any other reader.
I would strongly recommend you to get a reader with e-ink since it won't strain your eyes.
The page looks exactly like a paper book which means that you can read it in the sun easily.
At night, you need a light since there is the screen is not lit.
-
Heres what you need - http://calibre-ebook.com/
-
Nichola - whatever one you choose, I have a few thousand books on discs that you can get a copy of.
-
Eric - apology accepted no problem. :)
Calibre is (IMHO) the best ereader software around. You do need to convert to .mobi format if you want to transfer a book to the Kindle but with Calibre it's just a click of a button and "jobs done" and as already indicated there are numerous ways of getting books on the Kindle without paying Amazon (or anyone else)for them.
-
Thank you all for your replies so far. I am still deliberating:
I have just realised the new Kindle doesn't have text to speech which is another difference and I had thought this might be useful when lying on a beach somewhere:
Does anyone know if you can use a headset with it?
The reason that the US version is cheaper is because they have adverts and the price does not include tax and the non advert version is apparently $109.
The feedback on Amazon from original Kindle owners who have purchased the new one is favourable overall.
-
Nicola look at the link above to the Calibre and watch the demo as it helps explains a lot of the queries I had so it might help you.
-
I have used a tablet PC for reading e-books and there is no comparison to a Kindle. With the tablet the battery wears down quicker and the screen brightness is prone to give you a headache after a while. With th e Kindle this doesnt happen and the weight of the dvice makes it much more readable. Back to the question and some of the early replies - I would recommend the £89 device as this is more than enough storage for more books than you would read in a year.
-
Great advice HM so many thanks. Think I read somewhere that storage is on Amazons servers hence the lower storage amount on the device it self?
-
Mr Rindaloo has a Kindle and the text to speech sounds rather Stephen Hawking, which scuppered my plans of having an amusing time listening to Lady Chatterly's.....
-
Thanks Fi - I couldn't view video though was all lines...
Mrs Rindaloo you can have woman's voice as an option too
-
Yes, but hardly a smouldering voice. Smut robot stylee is only for robots, eh :)
-
The text to speak on Kindle is very robot like. I don't use it. I do however load a few songs so that I can listen whilst I read. Quite useful on my 'old' £109 Kindle with wifi.
-
Is your "old" Kindle the one now retailing at £149 [?]
-
No. That's the 3G one I think. Mine was £109 and is wifi only. They are brilliant though :)
-
Another slant is WH Smith have just released a version called KOBO, they are in partnership with KOBO, i have done a comparison on all ereaders and have went with this one, they retail at £169 but are on offer for £109, this is for the touch version, there is a cheaper version, so it will be worth having a look and see what you think.
-
I've got the 'older' version and must admit the ability to buy and download anywhere( Ibiza and Calis) is fab! I'd say the best feature was the screen though becuase there is no glare when reading in the sun and thats not true of other e-readers!
-
That and the battery life Cavfan :)
.. and the weight v's books to put in your case.
-
Hi Heather 07.My wife has the 3g and wifi one which cost about £149 in March 2011 from Amazon. It's great and we have used it to download newspapers and books while we were in Icmeler in August this year. The picture quality is excellent, even in bright Turkish sunshine. To conserve battery power, you've obviously got to switch off the internet connection when reading your downloads or your battery goes flat quite quickly.
-
Thank you everyone for your help. I have just purchased the Kindle 3G + Wi-Fi.
The up to 2 month battery based on half an hour use every day was the deciding factor as we will be taking this on our travels this winter.
Thanks again 8)
-
Thank you Sannyrut. I have been speaking to daughters partner who tells me a new one is due out before xmas. Cost to be £60.00. He seems to think that is enough to read books which is probably all I would do.
Then again, if I put it it on my xmas list, it will depend what santa brings:D ;)]
Off to see son who has one so will check his out.

I purchased a 3G Wi-Fi version of the Kindle in time for my holiday this summer. On the advice of Martin of MoneySavingExpert.com website, I got a re-conditioned one sold by Amazon. He said that at £111, it was worth buying,as many of these re-conditioned models are just returned stock, and Amazon give a 12 month warranty, the same as the new models.
As this was a considerable saving on the £152 full price for the 3G model, I went ahead and bought it. I had checked first that the "free" 3G service provided by Amazon was available in Turkey, and it turned it that it is. The Kindle arrived in top-top condition, fully boxed, and I could not tell that it was "re-conditioned".
Although the interface is indeed somewhat "clunky", I was able to check my emails (essential for us as we run a business back home), go on Facebook, etc. anywhere, anytime, and all for free! I could check Dalaman Airport that the flights were coming in on time etc. The screen is in black and white, and it is true you must turn off 3G/wi-fi as soon as possible after use as it eats up the battery power. The unit will default to wi-fi but use the 3G when wi-fi is not available. I didn't have to use the facility of downloading extra books from Amazon as I was too busy surfing!!
I would highly recommend the 3G model and lots of people are getting them after seeing my one in action this year, so get one soon if you want one for Christmas!! 8) 8)

I had the original Kindle when it first became available in the UK, although you had to buy it via Amazon.com in the States. I loved it!
When the wireless + 3g version became available through Amazon.co.uk I bought it - like others I wanted to make sure I could receive content here in Turkey. I can honestly say it is one of the best things I have ever bought. Books download quickly and painlessly from Amazon and anyone with an eye for a bargain can look through their site for free e-books. They have a list of top 100 e-books that is updated regularly as well as many, many more if you search.
It's right up there with my ipod and DS lite on life's little essentials list! (Sad I know!)
-
I have just bought the 3gb Kindle a refurbished one from Amazon, and there are no instructions with it, when I switch it on and go through the two steps they advise will it then tell me what to do next?thanks for any replies just that I do not have a clue what I am doing!:D
