Title: I'm Having a Breakdown
Post by: Scunner on October 21, 2011, 21:09:20 PM
Taking the in-laws back to Edinburgh airport in the family charabanc after their annual visit for the twin's birthday was my job today. Drove there, nothing remarkable as usual, stopped in the drop off area and said goodbyes etc. Back in the car, 50 metres driven and there is no power - no acceleration, pulled away from the payment barrier like a slug - and what followed was a nightmare journey up the motorway. OK going downhill, I hit 58mph at one time - sadly I also managed 32mph going uphill, being overtaken by everyone :( - I have found inclines I have never noticed in my life. Took (actually, rolled) the car into my trusty local garage and they put it through the whole diagnostic analysis and guess what is wrong with it...

Nothing! It drives 100% fine [:o]

I can't work out if I am unlucky or lucky today :D

Did you actually manage to get a human to look at the car or did they just rely on the computer read-out

I believe humans looked too and took it for a drive. I explained how my journey had gone and they said to leave it with them and they'd have a look. Because I don't like surprises and prefer to know what is ahead I said "can you tell me how much it will cost" and in all seriousness he replied "I can't tell you how much it will cost, I'll need to look first". I nearly smiled.

Please tell me he didn't take a sharp intake of breath and start shaking his head.

In my experience that is a very expensive combination. ;)

My car wouldn't start the other morning... sounded and looked like the battery was dead. Called out my mechanic... he gave me a jump start :P! Changed the battery for a new one, this morning it wouldn't even tick over!!!

Was the handbrake off??

Actually sounds similar to a problem I had with a minibus.  I worked with adults with learning disabilities and after a particularly horrendous trip to a supermarket things were a bit fraught in the  bus.  I pulled into a garage for petrol and payed,  I jumped in and drove away but the engine seemed sluggish then it went down a hill ok and went sluggish again on the straight.  I was trying to work out what could be wrong and traced the journey.
Bus had been alright leaving supermarket and the problem only started after I had filled up the DIESEL  bus with petrol :-\
Red face for me.  However seemed after it was cleaned it went so much better.

Sounds as thought he has his priorities right even if he can't fix motors. ;)

Funny you should say that Heather - my car doesn't have a 'physical' handbrake as such so that did cross my mind - but from a previous incident I at least know that wild horses couldn't shift that car even a metre with the handbrake on.

Not since the incident free drive down to the airport no Ian :D

I rang my mechanic friend to ask what it might be and he said "s*** in the carburettor". That didn't help either!

The first test drive I took after I past my test was in a Nova. After two or three miles Brenda noticed a peculiar smell which I put done to the farm land we were passing at the time. However after five miles I was forced to call in to a friends who promptly told me that I had indeed left the hand brake on :o

Is it a diesel - I have a diesel and lost power on the motorway some weeks ago and the mechanic put something called fuel cleaner (I am not very technical) and it runs like a dream now!

It is indeed Ian, I must get myself a bag/canister/bottle/jar/yard of this mythical "fuel cleaner" that you suggest.

I have a light that is on in my car. A sign something is up thought this female.
Took it to Kwikfit and they diagnosed and said they couldn,t find anything can't remember what they charged bu advice was to go to a ford garage.
Right away I thought "that will cost me" so went to little garage that I can trust.
Charged me nothing, couldn't find a problem and made the light go away.  if it came back I had to go to ford.
It came back.  Ford charged me £50 to "diagnose" that there was nothing showing and made light go away.
I hate garages.

Diesel particulate filter? Are you using the car just for fairly short runs ?

Going by the info so far, at a guess you have a Renualt Espace or some other form of foreign people carrier - it could have been the ECU threw a wobbly and it went into "Limp home mode" then when the garage had put their diagnostic gear on to it the glitch was reset. Strange that you did not get a warning light.

Failing that it could have been the floor mat had crept below the accelerator...................

.... and also check often if the oil level fluctuates Keith.

I think you probably have it Jim with ECU wobbly - but no warning light at all. Not sure on the filter Frank but yes I do short runs and a long run for me these days is like today's - a trip to Edinburgh of about 40 miles each way.

Is it a Renault Megane ?
There are coil things on them that need to be replaced at £40 a
time.  That can make it run odd and break your heart when you have to part with the cash
I found that if some were faulty they made car run odd, others going and the car wouldn't start.

Ah - so you bought a French car - well you should have bought a Ford - it is probably some Camembert stuck in the fuel jets - I hear they get a lot of that happening in France.

Self inflicted really :D :D

You've really let the side down mate. I'm sure the standard reply should have been, 'How often do I have to do that ?' ;)

Actually the CMAX has been known to just cut out at times. There is a Ford owners forum full of complaints and the garage never seem to find out the answer (luckily mine was never a problem)

It's probably to do with the engine managemtn if anything.

Engine managemtn ? gone haywire !!

The garage said I should have turned it off and on again and that would have cleared/reset it. That's easy to say but my experience of being miles from home with a spluttering car is never turn it off as you will not be able to start it again and be stuck! Keep it going at all costs  :)

Many years ago I had a Nissan that had a similar problem and every so often it would just cut out. It happened once in the outside lane of the M1. I was lucky it was late at night and I was able to get to the hard shoulder. I eventually got it to the Nissan dealer who said there was not a problem with the car. It happened again and the garage took it away and it came back with the same problem. As the car was nearly new I got onto Nissan UK. I threatened them withthe Sale of Goods Act and they sent an engineer to look at it. It actually cut out when he was driving the car. 3 days later the car was replaced with a new one. The old one was shipped back to Japan. About 6 weeks later I got a call from Nissan UK to thank me as they dismantled the car and found a problem with some part. They also gave me 2 years free servicing. That is what I call customer service.

Scunner, sorry I know it does not help with your problem.

Think they should have said it "might" have reset it. Indeed it might , but as you say thats the last thing you want to do miles from home. Need  ctrl, alt ,del buttons on modern vehicles !

Mine runs really well as well - maybe it's the way we drive them - no boy racer stuff etc :D

It's a 7 seater deisel Ian, please tell me how one can be driven in a "boy racer" way :D

I could leave it running and nip into Tesco and it would be perfectly safe - no chavs would be seen dead in it let alone nick it  :)

No, quite right Stan - they didn't say it would solve it as I implied - more it "probably" would have. I'm just not that brave.

Reminds me when my lads were about 9 and 10 I had a volvo but we moved house and it was 3 mile to school, so I got Carole a nice Fiat 126 to take the kids to school. They flatly refused to be seen in a mustard coloured Fiat 126 with a rag roof, I ended up travelling 20 miles to work in it while Carole had my car. On the odd occasion the did get in it they were dropped off 300yds from school.

Reminds me ,used to have a Renault 12 about twenty years ago, did all work on it myself, after changing the oil I checked it was in neutral through the open drivers window and started it up to check for leaks  , shame it had a lot of play in the gear lever, and it only felt like it was in neutral, bloody thing started instantly and went straight through my  lovely wooden garage doors. Learned to check more thoroughly though !

I wonder what he level of coolant in your engine was.
I had the same problem some weeks back.I was 10 miles into a 50 mile run on the motorway. Heading for a job interview. After a further 5 miles of swearing and cursing, I came off onto a side road and called the RAC.
The RAC man could not offer a diagnosis and offered a tow to a designated garage. As we were discussing this we noticed a humming noise despite the engine being off for 10 mins. Wallah ! No water in the cooling system. Problem solved, apart from a leaky cooling system.

4 pages on a non-existent car problem, don't you love the CBF:D
Years ago I had my car serviced and the garage could only offer me a skoda (in the years before they became good/popular)  I nearly drove through the village with a paperbag on my head.  Did duck down when I saw anyone I knew[^]
