Post by: Firo on November 20, 2011, 17:23:16 PM
Here's a question for you techies...
If I buy an Internet Enabled TV in Turkey is there anyway I can use a VPN (to get UK TV) without hard wiring it to an external device?

As far as I know, an Internet enabled TV, is one that can display the screen of a computer linked into it.

How do you use a VPN on the computer normally as i don't know exactly how it works but, for a Internet TV....

If you just visit a web address for VPN access  - then possibly depending on what operating system is on the TV

If you need to install software for the VPN - probably not

I would think an Internet TV would be linked to a router via cat V cable to enable the router to take care of the VPN. Probably a dedicated IP address for the I Net TV too using either its nic card or mac address so as to channel that IP address between the TV and router exclusively! Hope that helps - lol

The question is confusing as I didn't think the TV (or the ones available in the UK anyway) had any modem/router inbuilt - they simply have the ability to connect if such a facility is introduced, so be it wireless or direct cable connection it makes no difference where the TV is or where you are hoping to get access to? So if that is the case, Steve's answer is the critical one - it depends on how the VPN is configured, that will be the yes or no to whether you can or not. Possibly!

Failing that forget internet TV and get the 50 quid wireless jobby I posted yesterday to stream any VPN content from your laptop or PC t'big telly. :D

Try this link as it has people who seem to know what they are talking about. It might give you some pointers:

I had to install software so I guess the answer at the moment is "it probably won't work"
Scunner I already have a home server connected to the TV so don't need the gizmo you mentioned. It was just a question to see if getting an internet TV was worth it and the answer at the moment seems to be no. Will just treat ourselves to a new TV without that feature. Thanks all

I have a Samsung Internet TV, I bought it at Tecnosa near the Otogar.
I also bought a VPN router that plugs direct into the TV,
we now get numerous film and video packages and also
BBC iplayer.
works very good.
