Title: Disco Screen of Death

My daughter has an HP laptop. The screen displayed brightly coloured zigzags and other interesting visual effects. She turned it off to reboot - which it would not. Her computer chum says it is the "disco screen of death" that sometimes attacks HP stuff and it probably means the laptop is dead.

Anyone got any other thoughts?

Likely cause, although it may be a loose connection to the actual screen itself from the mainboard/graphics card.  Easy to check - hook it up to an external monitor using the vga port and if its the same then graphics chip or board gubbed.  If it's normal display then possibility of either loose connection or the ribbon cable between bottom half and screen is damaged/loose.

Mine went like that but it was down to someone who will remain nameless picking the laptop up by the screen. Got PC world to quote for a repair and they wanted £200 so bought a new laptop. Try plugging in a VGA lead and seeing if the computer will display on a monitor or TV. Mine works fine like that.

Thanks for your comments. It has now been declared deceased. Fortunately it is work computer (which she is allowed to take home for personal use) so they will replace it.

Rimms is right - could be a cracked screen. Most PC repair shops will fix for £80-£100
