Thanks Lynne received and works fine on my laptop with calibre.

Now here is a problem I have, can anyone help?
Ebooks, my new toy is an android tablet, I have Aldiko loaded and a few books, someone has just sent me a few of their ebooks, I can download them to my laptop and Calibre but how the devil do I now get them to load to Android? I am getting bored and angry now, anyone help?

Loz - hi - from memory I just connect my kindle to USB and click the"send to device" icon (top centre) and it automatically sends them to the "connected" device. I think this icon only appears once you have connected your device to the usb so that might be the problem?

I have now just done all the Martina Cole books and it transferred all of them in about 10 seconds

Ian :D :D

Thanks Ian but it is not a Kindle, it is an Android Tablet, great for travelling and also has the book library, I have download books (free) using ISBN, yet for the life of me I am having problems with the links sent to me by email.

Loz - doesn't Calibre just recognise the "device" once it is plugged into a Usb port - whether it is a Kindle or anything else?

What confused me initially was that the icon "send to device" doesn't appear until the "device" has been plugged in.

If I am stating the obvious and adding to your frustration - sorry  :)

Loz,

Does your tablet appear as a new drive in "My computer" when it's connected to the PC? If so then you will need to download a plugin from the Calibre site before it can be recognised.

If you look in Device Integration (in the FAQ section of the Calibre User guide) there's a list of the devices that Calibre can connect to. There is also help on how to get other (non listed) devices connected.

Once you've got your tablet connected then you may need to convert the files from the email into a format that your tablet will recognise but let's solve this one problem at a time.  :)

Lynne,

The idea of having the ebook catalogue was to avoid clogging up CBF with threads that start with "I've got these books if anyone wants them" or "Has anyone got these books that I'm looking for" and then each thread having dozens of posts inside which say "I've email'd you"

To date the catalogue stands at over 13,000 ebooks and seems to be working well. I email'd out 15 ebooks only a half hour ago. I will add your eight books to the catalogue, if you get any more email me the titles and author and I'll add them to the catalogue - simples  :)

Forgot to mention - for anyone interested in the Sophie Kinsella books there are four listed in the catalogue.  Shopholic and Baby, Shopaholic and Sister, Shopaholic takes Manhatten and Shopaholic ties the knot. Send an email to Shrek if you want any of them.

Just incase anyone needs it here's a quick 4 step guide to transferring ebooks from an email on to an ereader using Calibre.

1. Double click on the attachment in the email and it will ask you if you want to open it or save it. Choose save and then select the Calibre Library folder in your "Documents and Settings folder. This the default location created when you installed Calibre, if you changed the name then use that folder instead.

2. Connect your ereader to the PC and make sure the PC has picked it up by checking in 'My Computer'. You should see the device as new drive.

3. Load up Calibre, it will re-read your library and recatalogue any new books that it finds in there.  If it doesn't then use the "Get books" button to force it to go and look for your new books.

4. Select a book from the list in Calibre and use the "send to device button" to transfer them to the ereader. Note that the "send to device" button will only appear when the PC has recognised the ereader as a new drive.

Got the books Lynne thanks very much  8) I'll now have to see if I've got Calibre or download it. I've got Adobe Digital Editions which might be similar. Any advice would be welcome.
Once I build up a library I will be happy to return the favour  8)

Hi Nicola,

There isn't a yes /no answer to your question as it all depends on which format your file is in and which format your particular ereader will read. If they are the same then no problem, if they are different then you will need to convert the file into the correct format for your reader. Calibre is a good tool for converting files from one format to another. Kindles use the .mobi format.

When you get a book there should three files, a picture of the front cover usually in .pdf format, the book itself in whatever format, and a metadata file which contains book details such as ISBN, publisher, publishing date and a textual description of the book. When you select a book in Calibre it will display the cover at the top and the metadata underneath. Editting metadata can be tricky and isn't something that the casual book reader should attempt (or need to do)

Hope this helps.

If you look in this (General Topics) section Steve you will see "Ebook Library" - it is a spreadsheet download of 46 billion free books.
