Title: Need help and advice
Post by: Libra on December 28, 2011, 08:27:08 AM
A cat found refuge in one of the cat-boxes I placed in our garden ( Ovacik ). Unfortunately it looks very bad , has skin irritations and loss of hair. As we take care of other 10 or more cats in the garden , this poor cat's desease might be a danger for them.

Is there a quarantine fascility for such cases at the shelter ? After the treatment , I can take the cat back and treatment costs are no problem.

The greatest problem might be to catch it , as it is very shy.

We try a practical treatment since two days by giving it small doses of Alfasilin  (antibiotics ) mixed with food.

Any helpfull comment is welcome.

These are the picture I made this morning ( from a distance ) :

There is quarantine facilities at the shelter and you can take it there and speak to Emre(afternoons only) he should be able to help you, if not take it to Serkan on Mustafa Kemal Bulvari No.91a - Fethiye, 200-300 metres toward Fethiye from Tansas same side.

Thank you Tinkerman. Is there a phone number to contact Emre or the shelter ?

Now the major problem will be to "convince" the cat to get into a carrying box. The cat was here this morning , now it 's gone ; maybe it will come back at night etc.

We will try to make it trust us in a few days , then it might be easier.

I finally managed to catch the cat with a cat-trap I loaned from the shelter. I took him to Serkan Vet for inspection. Unfortunately the poor cat has a big tumor growing aside his tongue. Nothing infectious , but as the tumor will grow , it will be difficult for him to breath. Too late for an operation Serkan said. Now he is still asleep in our garden. We will feed him as long as he comes and as long as he lives...now I need a glass of wine...

Wow, I would have thought it kinder to put him out of his misery.  He clearly isn't coping, can't groom himself and has skin problem.  Not criticising you Libra, you have tried.  Just surprised Serkan didn't suggest it.

We talked about it with Serkan. I intended to heal the cat when doing all these. As even a healthy cat unfortunately may be overrun by a car and die suddenly , I thought why should I not leave him live as long as he can.

We're in same situation with a much loved pet of ours.  He is on meds now and happy as larry, and seems fit as a fiddle.  An op might kill him, I am tempted to let him have his life till we see he is becoming unhappy.   Sad times.

So sorry to hear both of you have sad news regarding your pets/animals, that is the only bad thing of being an animal lover the heartache that comes with something going wrong. If both animals seem ok at the mo maybe let mother nature take her course when it is time. good luck both of you.

Thanks Karennina.  I was considering the operation had it been the only thing wrong with him, but he is old and I have since found some lumps.  I have a horrible feeling there's too much stacked against him, and yet he seems fit as a fiddle.  We see the vet in a few days to discuss options.

Oh my goodness, that's so kind of you  Libra to take the time to get serkan to look at the poor cat....poor thing.....I understand why you have done what you have, my only worry would be when the tumour gets that big that he can't breath and he will suffer...unless you think you will be able to catch him and get him to serkan again quickly ?.

Lynne, I would not go for the op...if things are okay and under control I personally would not rock the boat.....but that's  just me.....who is it you are talking about..?...you certainly have had more than your fair share of sadness with your animals over the past few months......take care xxxxx

I'm afraid it's Ted.  He has a growth in his neck.  He's on antibiotics, and the lump is a lot smaller.  Serkan said he could operate but its in a dodgy spot and the anaesthetic is also a consideration....  But I realise he has lumps in his stomach and I have never seen this before.  Will have to discuss it with Serkan.  The lump will choke him if it begins growing again.  The ones in his stomach, who knows.  He has a scanner now, so he might be able to tell more from that.  Yes, this past 18 months have been fraught, we have lost 5 pets.  Ted is old and Jack is going to be 14 in September.  We have to be realistic.  They can't live forever.  I hasten to add Jack is fighting fit for an old codger.

As we ourselves are tiny particles travelling through space and time , it's often difficult for us to make correct decisions and to find correct solutions. So it might be better in such cases , to leave nature take it's course , as the cause of certain problems is nature itself. Every creature that tries to survive ( which one would not ? ) deserves a helping hand and here we should try to do our best to lenghten their lives.
