when you leave the airport follow the signs for the otogar/ burdar to get out of town, then you just need to follow the road signs towards Fethiye its pretty easy and as long as its not been snowing quite straight forward.  if its been snowing hard you may be sent on the coast road which will be alot longer route, but i believe still quite a simple road to follow.

Once on the road out of Antalya to Fethiye it is pretty easy and most of the road has been renewed. I think you can guarantee they will be quiet.

I suppose, being a cab drive(r), your friend just carried-on driving along the closed road and switched off his lights so he couldn't be seen.

If it was me I would park up just outside Antalya, have a little nap and drive once it became light.I drove the route a number of times and if you have never driven in Turkey before it sounds a dangerous way to start. The views are beautiful too and a shame to miss them

the drive from the airport to the outskirts of Antalya is like driving in London but no one indicates before pulling out or changing lanes.
once on the mountain its quiet, but always the chance of experiencing Turkish driving at its best, people driving in the middle, overtaking on bends, stopping without warning etc.
Add to that random dogs that appear from no where and chase your tyres, tractors with no lights on etc.
I'm not sure I would attempt it without ever having driven in Turkey, certainly wouldn't do it in the dark.
A2B or transfers only ( can't remember which) were offering transfers for around £30 which has to be a much safer and less stressful option.

I would go along with all those that wouldn't drive it in the dark. The views are really worth seeing but the last time I did it, part of the road had disappeared over the edge of a very large drop. Looked like a giant had taken a bite out of it!

Hi Phil , my wife and I arrive in Antalya on the 3rd Jan at 21.00 hrs and have driven this Road many times, but as everyone has said this trip is wonderful and has fantastic views during the Daylight hours, it is in general a good road with a lot of dual carriageway on it's route, Once you finally get out of Antalya it's very easy and is signposted well. I am led to believe that Snow Chains are mandatory and could carry a fine from the local Police if you fail to have them , worth contacting your Carhire Company and adding this to your contract.. it's quite common. We are seriously considering booking into a Hotel in Antalya , then make a fresh start early morning , there is a huge choice of hotels and they are very cheap . Basically , it's just your luck , the weather could be in your favour.

Having spent a week driving in Antalya last year I would suggest that this is the worst part of the journey. The drivers are mad and the signposting not good. Its easy to get lost and spend ages getting out of town.

Drove from Antalya last night and there was snow on the mountain road. It was passable and although progress was a little slow for 20 mins we got through no problem. As for the route, the roads are quite good and I wouldn't class the run as dangerous. Get out of Antalya at night while the traffic is quiet and 2.5 hours later you will be in Fethiye comfortably.

Snow Chains are a great accessory.............but only if you know how to fit them and drive safely with them on.

Just to let you know I arrived safely in Calis. We arrived Antalya airport at 22.15 on 1st Jan - by the time we picked up the car etc it was 11.15 - hire company advised us not to drive over mountains due to snow. Filled up and asked way to Fethiye as no maps - I had only printed route over mountains which was my fault - garage very helpful and wrote down the main towns we should pass through. Arrived safely in Calis about 4 in the morning - only regret was that we couldn't admire the scenery but that probably was a good thing as I was driving!!
Thanks for all of the advice.
