Title: Advice on wine.
Post by: John H on December 29, 2011, 15:05:01 PM
I have a problem in choosing a gift.
I am looking for suggestions as to the best red wine for a maximum cost of £25 a bottle.
All advice gratefully received.

Looks like there are plenty of wine conner sewers on here, but only the 3 for a tenner brigade:D:D

Had it been asking for recommendations for no more than £25 for a box of six, I'd have answered ages ago  ;)

Wine is a personal thing and sometimes the three for a tenner can be much nicer than the expensive stuff. I was given a bottle of Barolo 2006 Ciabot Berton for Christmas and it was top notch.I think it was bought from Majestic Wine, I have seen it in a local wine shop for £25 a bottle.

As nice as it was I would have bought 6 of the 3 for a tenner and still would have had change.

Try Lanunilla Rioja Reserva 2003 or 2004 bronze medal winner
usually £10-£15.00 per bottle.  Tesco's have a good online deal for it
just now usually £90.00 for a case of 6 (2004) offer is £45.00. plus £5.00 carriage.
I agree with Ovacikpeedoff, don't need to spend £25.00 for a good bottle of wine.

If £25 is the maximum and you prefer to pay less - I can recommend an amazing red - Penfolds Kalimna Bin 28 Shiraz. It can occasionally crop up in case deals at Tesco wines, but is widely available. Here it is at Majestic Wines: http://www.majestic.co.uk/find/product-is-19094

I can't imagine how much better wines get from this to £25 wines, and as knowledge is expensive, I don't wish to know  ;) - If someone got me a bottle of this I'd be well chuffed.

Our son got us a bottle of Pink Champagne at around 35.00.  It was wasted on me.  Had cheaper in bargains at xmas that were a lot nicer.

Does the recipient of this enjoy Port.  I have a friend who enjoys red wine and loves a nice glass of port.  (just an idea to confuse the issue: :))

I agree that the price I quoted seems excessive, and represents two bottles of Grouse to me, but I am buying on behalf of my sister in law who unfortunately cannot shop for herself at the moment.
She needs it as a 70th birthday gift for a friend.
Thanks for the suggestions.

A good tip for a cheap red wine is to prime the glass
with a little port and taste the difference!! Enjoy.T.

I agree with Scunner re Penfolds. Excellent full boddied red and Bin 28 occasionally pops up on a good deal in Tesco.

My friend sent me a bottle from Melbourne, Oz the other year and his tip was to open it and stick it in the fridge for 1/2 hours before drinking. It definatley hit the spot with me  :)
