There has been a big landslide at The Sundial due to the large amount of rain in the last 2 weeks. We wish him well. Looks like its gonna be a big shoring up job. All our best Murat. Pictures are on facebook butI dont know how to put them on here.
-

-
Sundial has posted the pic John, its not looking good!
-
I too have seen ths pics on Facebook Anne .. absolutely terrible. the photos are on Murat's FB page. I'm not sure if these links will work:

-
Thanks Scunner and yes good luck to Murat and all at Sundial!
-
That wall actually looks like it might be concrete block?? Surely not??!!
-
Murat's page is here: https://www.facebook.com/sundialotel?sk=wall
-
How awful. Good luck Murat and team :( Hugs from the Pookies
-
Looks like piling is gonna be required. Hope then can stand the expense. At least everyone is safe. Hope they all stay that way.
-
Another shocking photo from Facebook
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/425635_10150522570894755_666289754_8929016_339040388_n.jpg)
-
I hope his insurance covers this. its going to be expensive to put right.
-
He'll need a retaining wall this time - how was that ever going to prevent this?
-
How terrible, hope everyone is ok; that "retaining wall" (and I say that with tongue in cheek) is totally inadequate for that construction, it does indeed appear to be rendered block work from the photographs ??. Looks a very expensive problem to correct, hope everything turns out ok for Murat and his family :(
-
problem being its still raining so could get worse before we know the full extent of damage done.

Lego maybe ?
-
Turkish Lego at that

No one in this area has been prepared for the amount of rain that we have had. It has never been as bad as this. There has been some terrible damage around Koca Calis and Ciflik area. The land at the Sun Dial has been safe for years and years but it just couldnt cope with this. I fell sorry for the new builds down below. I wonder how much water they have in them. Forecast for next week is more rain and on Saturday lots of rain and very cold.
-
Mercury, it may not have rained as much as the recent deluges in the time you have lived there, but, the natives will certainly have had experience of this severity in the past. Why, Oh Why, are they allowed to make such dangerous constructions? Looking at the remains of the "retaining" wall, ( which obviously didn't retain, ) even if it had been built using poured, reinforced concrete, those totally inefficient buttresses, which stopped part-way up the outside of the wall, would NEVER have been sufficient to hold back the hydraulic pressure which obviously built up behind it. There is NO substitute for good old Clerks of Works, ever.
-
The locals say it is ten years since it was so bad. I have every sympathy for him and the ones who have property in Koca Calis and Ciflik who have homes with 3 feet of sludgy water in them and are surrounded by a man made lake. Not just this area either. Bodrum. Icmeler, Kusadasi and Koycegiz are a hell of a state.
-
One thing to ponder is that it was obviously not fit for the purpose - but not due to the possibility of huge water pressure (although that obviously was the cause here) - seeing the photos I am stunned that an earth tremor didn't cause something similar - although that would have probably been a swift break of tons of hard dry soil taking the entire wall with it - anyone below or standing at the fence would have been history.

Couldn't agree more, Baz MICW. ;)

Sad to see these photos of the sundial as its my favourite resturant have had many a good time there.I wonder wether it will be up and running for the summer? As a retired builder i would imagine that the work involved will take time and alot of money.
-
That is just awful, feel so sorry for anyone having this happen to their property, I feel sorry for the people who live below and all the people who have had their houses flooded this year, so sad.
-
Amazing how things have moved on

Good grief, that's some amount of reinforcement.
PS Hope that photograph isn't taken from the top looking down.

Thought I'd posted these, senile dementia kicking in already!
1st lot of pics are of the work in progress as of yesterday, 19th Feb.
-
Looks like they are going to do a proper job of the wall this time....pity they didn't do it the first time seeing how much it was holding up, but T.I.T. :)))
-
Thanks Rimms, looks like it'll be ready for the begining of the season
-
Not been to Sundial yet. If I can find it, I'll pay a visit in May. Seems to get nothing but good reviews.
:D
-
great pics brightened up a dull day
-
Toky - its lovely. Stunning views and a special atmosphere. Hospitality is great - I think you'd like it.
-
If you can find it take there nos with you and ring them it is easier one road has been shut off .
-
They used to do a pick up from Calis in fact they may still do so if there are enough people, if I am correct it may have been on certain nights of the week and I think a minimum of 4 or 6 people I would happily make a contribution to the petrol to be picked up to get there well worth a visit :)
-
I'm so pleased that the Sundial will be back. We fell in love with this place last year and we were so looking to going back this year.. and now can :)
-
Don't bank on it being open keep your eyes on this site ,if rain keeps up no work ,no grounds at the moment have got an infinity pool now only prob is its downwards 300 ft to the roads below ,when finished very nice plus bigger hope the rain stays away .
-
I think you are pretty much done with the rain for this year Lance, I certainly hope so.
-
Judging from today's downpour I don't think the rain has entirely disappeared just yet!:( ;)
-
Nor do i and i think there quite a bit more to come the dried up river at catalarik is more like rapids now there are herons and egrets sitting there catching fish .[^]
-
Just checked on last years march /april weather march 13 days rain april 15 days . ;)
-

-
Thanks Highlander. Not looking likely that we'll be going for dinner this time around :(
-
When are you coming? You'd be amazed how quickly the Turkish people can turn things around - getting ready for the season is invariably done at the last minute.
That said many places don't open until May for the season.
-
He's hoping to be ready to re-open on 15th April.
-
Hi Nichola we're coming over this weekend!
-
Sorry also meant to say thank you to you Donna!
-
A-M how long are you here for... :)
10 day forecast is for sunshine but a bit on the nippy side for here 17-19 degrees day time and 7-10 at night times.
-
Eh, that's a decidely good summer's day for us in Scotland Nicola LOL.
:D
-
I know hon... there were people bragging about it all over Facebook last week lol ;)
-
There is an update on the Sundial here...

It is a remarkable recovery and one that they didn't skimp on (which is so easy over there when it comes to repairing). That truly was a major structural project which must have cost tens of thousands. I wish them the greatest season ever, they deserve some of the other kind of luck now :)
-
Amazing turn around in such a short time, and to use what was an ufortunate turn of events to an advantage by expanding the place shows what a visionary the guy is. Hope they have a fantastic season..
-
Wonderful to see how they have rebuilt and even expanded. They deserve every success for the future.

Seems like things are moving on.
:D
-
I went up to see Murat yesterday and he tells me they expect to be finished in a week to 10 days depending on the weather, it is truly remarkable what he has achieved up there following the problems.
-
Amazing when you look at the damage that was done. Tried to find it last year but couldn't. I won't be leaving until I find it in May LOL
:D
-
Toky : it took us several attempts over several visits to eventually find it !!! Its worth it ! :)
-
I`m sure Murat offers a free pick up service ;)
-
hi, is this place up and running now, always fancied a night here, how do you get to it from ovacik please 8)
-
All up and runnıng and the food ıs stıll wonderful. If there are a few of you rıng hım and he wıll pıck you up.
-
hi, there will be just 2 of us, is it far from the main road when we get off the dolmus
-
Dagnabbit, yes it is walkable, I'd guess about 10 mins up a hill.
I would not even consider it between May - Sept because in the heat you will be good for nothing when you get up there.
I would ring Murat at the Sundial I don't know weather he has a minimum no for free pickup. He would possibly be able to fit you in the bus with others from Ovacik.
Its worth the phone call food is excellent
-
hi again, thanks will give it a go, maybe even a pick up from the main road is possible, is there a website or somewhere i can get his number from. ;)

It is adviseable to book in advance as Murat has been fully booked every evening for weeks. It is a very busy place which speaks for itself.
-
many thanks to both of you, will definetly give it a go, we were going to go there last year but never got round to it : :)
