There has been a big landslide at The Sundial due to the large amount of rain in the last 2 weeks. We wish him well. Looks like its gonna be a big shoring up job. All our best Murat. Pictures are on facebook butI dont know how to put them on here.

He'll need a retaining wall this time - how was that ever going to prevent this?
Title: Sun Dial
Post by: valleyboy on January 26, 2012, 18:10:48 PM
How terrible, hope everyone is ok; that "retaining wall" (and I say that with tongue in cheek) is totally inadequate for that construction, it does indeed appear to be rendered block work from the photographs ??. Looks a very expensive problem to correct, hope everything turns out ok for Murat and his family :(

problem being its still raining so could get worse before we know the full extent of damage done.

No one in this area has been prepared for the amount of rain that we have had. It has never been as bad as this. There has been some terrible damage around Koca Calis and Ciflik area. The land at the Sun Dial has been safe for years and years but it just couldnt cope with this. I fell sorry for the new builds down below. I wonder how much water they have in them. Forecast for next week is more rain and on Saturday lots of rain and very cold.

Mercury, it may not have rained as much as the recent deluges in the time you have lived there, but, the natives will certainly have had experience of this severity in the past. Why, Oh Why, are they allowed to make such dangerous constructions? Looking at the remains of the "retaining" wall, ( which obviously didn't retain, ) even if it had been built using poured, reinforced concrete, those totally inefficient buttresses, which stopped part-way up the outside of the wall, would NEVER have been sufficient to hold back the hydraulic pressure which obviously built up behind it. There is NO substitute for good old Clerks of Works, ever.

Post by: mercury on January 27, 2012, 18:22:18 PM
The locals say it is ten years since it was so bad. I have every sympathy for him and the ones who have property in Koca Calis and Ciflik who have homes with 3 feet of sludgy water in them and are surrounded by a man made lake. Not just this area either. Bodrum. Icmeler, Kusadasi and Koycegiz are a hell of a state.

Post by: Scunner on January 27, 2012, 18:32:22 PM
One thing to ponder is that it was obviously not fit for the purpose - but not due to the possibility of huge water pressure (although that obviously was the cause here) - seeing the photos I am stunned that an earth tremor didn't cause something similar - although that would have probably been a swift break of tons of hard dry soil taking the entire wall with it - anyone below or standing at the fence would have been history.

They used to do a pick up from Calis in fact they may still do so if there are enough people, if I am correct it may have been on certain nights of the week and I think a minimum of 4 or 6 people I would happily make a contribution to the petrol to be picked up to get there well worth a visit  :)

When are you coming? You'd be amazed how quickly the Turkish people can turn things around - getting ready for the season is invariably done at the last minute.

That said many places don't open until May for the season.

It is a remarkable recovery and one that they didn't skimp on (which is so easy over there when it comes to repairing). That truly was a major structural project which must have cost tens of thousands. I wish them the greatest season ever, they deserve some of the other kind of luck now  :)

Dagnabbit, yes it is walkable, I'd guess about 10 mins up a hill.
I would not even consider it between May - Sept because in the heat you will be good for nothing when you get up there.

I would ring Murat at the Sundial I don't know weather he has a minimum no for free pickup. He would possibly be able to fit you in the bus with others from Ovacik.
Its worth the phone call food is excellent
