Title: Where to go What to see.
Post by: doubletwo on January 28, 2012, 22:22:37 PM
Its a fair few months before we come on holiday to Calis but we have already decided that we will hire a car for 5 days.Who from we dont know yet so suggestions welcome. The other thing we badly need help with is where to go and what to see in those 5 days. We do want to go to Ephesus and Pamukkale but not sure if we can do both in one day.I have driven in Spain and Grecce so it cannot be any worse than those countries I hope  :) Wherever we go we do not mind staying overnight to get the most out of the 5 days.We just want to see as moch as possible. So folks if it were you in our shoes where would you go in those days?

The thing about Fethiye is that while you are quite well placed to visit the likes of Ephesus and Pamukkale, you also have an incredible amount in the close area - all well within a day's round trip. We went to Nerja in Spain last year and loved it, but in terms of tourist attractions they have some caves and a donkey sanctuary and that's about that for days out.

Have a look at what can be done in a day from a Calis base: http://www.fethiye.co.uk/about-fethiye/places-to-visit.html

It's quite good that website, I know the bloke wot rit it.

Thats a very nice site Scunner and have bookmarked it for future use.I notice though that most of the places to visit are easily got to by dolmus so no need to hire a car really.Any sugestions for places a bit further out anyone? As I said we dont mind staying overnight at any one place of interest rather than venturing out everyday from Calis.Patara sounds a nice place to visit so we can maybe go there in conjunction with somewhwere else on the same day.

It is not far from Patara to Kalkan which would be a good place to stay overnight.

you sound very like the memsahib and I!

They did a bit of a double take when I took the car I had rented back
and they saw the mileage!

Do consider that although car hire is not horrendously expensive in Turkey Petrol is, so, go for a diesel if you are going to drive a long way. Much as I love Calis/Fethiye if I was coming to Turkey for a week and particularly wanted to see Ephesus, Pammukale etc. by drivingt myself I would probably head further away toward Bodrum/Izmir regions as it will be a very long drive! I drove from Calis through to Side and back in one day and it was exhausting! In fact I cancelled any thoughts of driving to Ephesus! There are good value trips from Calis by Bus and staying overnight though.

There is so much to see and do around Calis that you can easily get to by car, Tlos is a fascinating Site, I would highly recommend an reasonably early start to Tlos, (not that far, about 40 minutes from memory) pay a guide ---- worth it -- and then a trout Lunch at the original Yakapark further up the Mountain, amazing views! A walk down the Sahklikent Gorge is amazing, the beaches like Ptara and Iztuzu are World class. A walk though the ghostly ruins of Kaya Koyu and a swim at Gemiler etc. Car Hire is all much thge same to be honest, I used Fethiye Renta-car just opposite the PTT and it was excellent, I have used 2 others that were ok! What I did like about these guys is that they did total insurance includeing HDW whihc most wont!

Enjoy Calis!

Meldrew

I suppose the point I was making was that Fethiye is very lucky in that it has so many things to see nearby as it sits in the middle of so much - so you don't need to travel hours on end to experience great days out. I do intend adding more and of course that means having to go further afield in time. Glad you liked the site, thanks  :)

Cant believe anybody could go to nerja and not get talked into the free trip to the blanket factory in malaga!,anyway we have booked again this year in calis and hope to actually have our two weeks in the sun unlike last year, still cant believe H4u went bust the day after we paid the final balance.I almost forgot to mention the Finca & Bodega trips.

I would have thought something like that would get blanket coverage. Perhaps you missed it because you were two sheets to the wind.

Be a little wary  :) The descriptions of how easy to get to places not always what they seem! For example you may have to change Dolmus several times, and the station to get one to where you are heading can be quite a way from where you are dropped off! Also you can find that you may be told a Dolmus goers there but in fact it drops you a mile away -- not funny if it is very hot! Last year I gave two exhausted germans a lift, they were heading to Tlos, the dolmus only goes along the main road, it is a long way uphill from there to Tlos!

Also the routes can vary considerably resulting in quite a long trip.

Yes, you can get there by Domus -- but ---------:D

If you are really going to travel out, say to Kalkan, Kas, Kekova (lunch by the waterside there is heaven!), Tlos, Patara, Iztuzu etc. then a car is a lot better!

There is so much to see and do round Calis/Fethiye I have still not been everywhere I want to see and on my fourth visit!

Have fun whatever!

You have all given me a lot of interesting information and I will have to plan well ahead to get the most out the weeks car hire I think.
Meldrew, you seem to be a well travelled guy when it comes to Turkey and I will take a lot of your advice. What you said about going to places by dolmus certainly makes sense.
I was very interested in what you said about getting a diesel hire car rather than petrol.Wise advice once again.I have already taken that advice on board and made enquiries as to hireing a diesel.
Your quote from Fethiyerentacar looked very good. Can you believe Meldrew I have just recieved a lower quote than yours :)
I was just wondering if you or any members have advice on a good map as I will need a good one.I dont think a satnav is an option in Turkey yet is it.
Scunner. I have spent an hour or so on your Fethiye site and once again I have to say its a great site.full of information for someone like me.Its a pity you can't somehow intigrate it within this site so the two are combined.Just a daft thought so ignore that.
B T W thanks for getting me up and running again.I know who to go to now for any p c troubles I may get in the future. :)Cheers

Keep an eye on the photos section on this forum. I have a hire car at the moment, am out & about most days, pics & a rough itinerary there, am happy to answer any specific questions Meldrew & others haven't already covered.

PS: My hire car (Renault Symbol - Clio with boot!) cost me 500tl for 2 weeks, special winter rate.

Not so daft actually - I'd love to but CBF is based on a fairly old set up which wouldn't integrate with a site like fethiye.co.uk - or vice versa - and as people who understand these things (better than me) will testify, it is something I bleat on about and ponder all the time. The main problem (or issue is a better word) is that members know their way around the forum and probably aren't crying out for fancier options or a slicker layout. Changing it all might be the biggest error ever for us [:o]

As for Fethiye.co.uk I wanted two things mainly - to take every 500 pages available on each subject and strip out the dull and condense it into a page of the interesting bits; and I also like websites where it is easy to find your way around and easy to get lost if you want to - I find I can go to Youtube to see a video someone has posted, and an hour later still be on Youtube looking at something that was related to the thing before the thing before (etc) - that was the plan for fethiye.co.uk anyway  :)

Supercabby
Thanks so much for the link. Just one question, probably to you and Scunner really.  Why is it you are the only member out of 5000 plus members that is posting these kinds of photos?
I for one will most certainly enjoy showing other members photos of what I have seen when I have been in Turkey and hope to do exactly that in the future.
The other thing I want to say Supercabby is. I have loved looking at the photos you have posted and to thank you for posting them.
I am not even half way through them yet and will enjoy looking at all all of them and to any future ones you post.I feel through this forum and what I see from your pictures I am as near to Calis Beach as I can get without actually being there. Please keep it up and thanks.

I enjoy my photography & love to share my pics, I'm sure there are lots of members taking similar pics but keeping them private, each to their own! 1 thing I will say is it's quite time consuming to edit & upload albums full + it's not cheap to go out & about every day for 2 weeks, remembering petrol is cheaper in the UK than here in Turkey!

I for one will most certainly enjoy showing other members photos of what I have seen when I have been in Turkey and hope to do exactly that in the future.
I look forward to seeing your pics in due course.

You're welcome, nice to know some folk out there in CBF land enjoy what I do just as much as me!
