Title: Introducing our 2012 Project - Bozalan School
Post by: Scunner on March 07, 2012, 15:53:27 PM
As previously mentioned, CBF has decided to support a specific project working in tandem with the Calis Children's Charity (3C) who you probably know undertake many projects, often in order to make life more rewarding, educational and fun for those local kids who are not lucky enough to have everything they need. In fact, it isn't about getting everything they need - even the bare minimum necessary for basic things like a good education and a fun playtime can be a cost well beyond some schools.

Our first ever project will be for Bozalan School - high in the hills above Saklikent. Refreshingly cooler in summer; damp, cold and unhealthy in winter. In fact, so damp that some of the classrooms couldn't be used at all, and teachers had to sleep on site as the road was so bad. 3C charity have seen more needy local schools than most of us - and the condition of this school was a shock even to those hardy folk.

Generous local benefactors (as far as I know wishing to remain anonymous) have kicked off the improvements by sorting out the appalling roof, and putting in a central heating system - which is a wonderful start - in fact the two most important things because we can't do much good under a leaking roof in stone cold rooms.

The next requirement is to have the toilet block fitted out - the ceramics (I'm trying to be posh here) have also been donated and I hope to convince a local building company to install them free of charge and will keep you informed. The whole place also needs painting but to give you an idea of the current state of the building, this will have to wait perhaps for a whole sunny summer to dry through before I hopefully find another good hearted local company to do the job.

Where you can help:

We have a list of items that the school needs - some of it desperately and some of it just to make the school day a bit more rewarding. From coloured pencils to a lorry load of desks. The proposal is that we publish the list of requirements and members can pledge to donate to buy one of them that is in their price range - rather like a wedding list - and as the individual items are pledged for, we will put a line through them. Members can also make a ‘normal' donation in the usual CBF/Paypal fashion, and we will put these together to hopefully cover a few larger items.

The largest items we hope will be funded through a sponsor system - we will contact local companies and remind them how many free recommendations they got in the nine years of CBF and  would they like to join us on this project and receive great publicity on here for their generosity. Members who have close relationships with a local business are humbly asked if they could propose that they sponsor something. It would also be nice if members who we have been here for when they needed advice could be here for us for this special project! We also have vague plans to have some fund raising evenings between now and the Carnival week.

We will put the list up shortly so you can see what we are aiming to raise funds for. In the meantime, you can read more about Bozalan School here: http://calis-beach.co.uk/forum/calis_childrens_charity/bozalan_school_45802.0.html

count me in I have gained a wealth of knowledge from CBF over the years and probably saved money in various ways thanks to this forum. I work at two schools so will keep my eye out for things that get chucked out never ceases to amaze me the things that get thrown away over here, they are not even offered to charity shops or local children's homes. :)

This sounds a great scheme, not just a short term fix to the physical problems, but something with long term future benefits in the contribution it makes to the kids and their lives.  Well done for the work done so far, and good lick with the planned fund raising.

All efforts to support us are usually most welcome Pete. I don't wish to sound ungrateful but can we pass on the good lick?

None of the committee warned me that we should have danger money for driving up to Bozalan school!! Some of us went to Derekoy school today same direction but the opposite side of the hill. All I can say is "Rod you deserve a medal" a road would be nice to get up there. LOL :o

Announcing the <b>extensive</b> list of needs for Bozalan School below - yes they really do need all of these - let's hope we can do our best, whether that is everything on it or some of it, we'll collectively make one hell of a real difference for these kid's schooling and playtime.

Remember, you can help in one of several ways:

1. Choose one or more items on the list you would like to supply funding for.
2. Make a 'regular' donation (which we will pool/allocate to items)
3. If you are close to a local business, say an estate agent, restaurant, tour company or shop - please ask them to sponsor one of the items (or more than one!) - I will personally see the publicity they receive on CBF and Fethiye.co.uk will be well worth their effort. My experience is (and this is not meant to offend anyone, it is a great compliment that businesses in Calis and Fethiye rarely offer to sponsor charity events - but when asked are nearly always delighted to pitch in - so PLEASE ask wherever possible!

Details of how to donate/sponsor to follow, but for now here is the list: Only ORANGE items to go now!!!

I have added a quick page that explains how to donate via Paypal - this is at http://calis-beach.co.uk/bozalan_school.htm

The important bits are that it is best to log in to your paypal account directly at www.paypal.co.uk rather than use the donate link. Logging in this way means you can select 'gift' as the transfer type, meaning Paypal will not deduct their fee from your donation [full details on where to find "gift" are given on page 3 of this topic]. The account email address for this project is shown below:

If you use the "Donate" button on the Bozalan School page, Paypal will  deduct their handling fee as there is no option to select "gift" as the transfer type.

If you are pledging to buy a specific item via the donate button please can you add 7% to ensure there is enough after Paypal have taken their fee to pay for the item. If in doubt you can contact me and I will give you my bank details (assuming I know you) for a fee free transfer.

Any questions please ask away.

Also, to maximise publicity - please can Facebook users consider pasting the donation page - http://calis-beach.co.uk/bozalan_school.htm - into their Facebook status, it may bring us a donor or two - thanks  :)

Hi Keith, thank you and CBF so much for taking on Bozalan School as the official 2012 CBF charity project.  It would be absolutely brilliant if the great people on CBF are able to help provide for some  (or  hopefully a lot) of the items on Bozalan's wish list.  It will really make a difference to the daily lives of these children (and also to the children that follow on at the school when the present youngsters  leave for "big school" in Kemer).

The children really do have very, very little at the moment and it would be great to provide them with some of the nicer things as well as the basic basics - things that are just taken for granted by children at UK schools.

I understand that some residents out in Turkey are already looking to pledge some money for this worthwhile project.   This will be collected by the 3C's on behalf of CBF and official receipts given and we will then add this to the running CBF total.

Again thank you so much on behalf of the 3C's and the staff and children at Bozalan village school.

I should also mention that if you are donating to buy a specific item then please drop me a PM telling me which one it is - and also if you prefer to be anonymous, which is of course your right. Consider not being anonymous though - you will be making a difference and should take the glory for your efforts  8)

For those that choose to purchase a specific item on the list, we could then arrange to take a photograph of the item(s) and post this on the forum once it is purchased so that you can see what you have bought for the school :)

It would make good reading if anyone is having a fund raising event in England. Say a bring and buy sale or a coffee morning or such like. We would like to pinch some of your money raising ideas for out here. Please let us know if you are planning anything.

Keith, When you use the donate link from the site I did not see the gift aid bit, Does paypal see a donate as gift aid automatically?
Also it a pity you cant get the 28p in the pound back off HMRC as its going to a charity like in the UK. It might be worth an ask if you rub shoulders with George Osbourne in the pub.

The local libraries are having Knit and Natter afternoons to raise funds where they charge a small amount and provide a cup of tea and a biscuit. They have proved very popular and raised quite a lot of funds.

I have retrieved two black bags full of stuff puzzles games and stuff. We have a great catolouge at work that does supplies quite cheaply for schools, for example 144 lead pencils around £3.50 and if my memory serves me right I think a big box of coloured pencils (mixed colours)with loads in is around £6 I will ask next week when we start ordering again in April when the new budgets are allocated can I order some if I give the money, I dont see why it should be a problem if I explain what I want them for :)

To donate as a gift (which means Paypal will not deduct a handling fee)

You need to go to Paypal and log in to your account (i.e. NOT go via the donate link on the Calis Beach Website/Bozalan school project page.

Go to "Send Money" and you will see this - select 'Personal':

Once 'Personal' is selected, make sure "Gift" is selected:

Job done, Paypal should waive their fee  :)

Upsetting ? Of course it is. But what upsets me more is why the Turkish education authority has allowed this shambles to occur in the first place. Perhaps I'm being naive but something here is not making sense. We are not even talking here of a developing country !

We have had a reflexology voucher worth 40TL donated today and Toky is selling football cards in her local club to help us. My friend at a train company has donated family travel vouchers which are worth quite a lot of money. Alper AKA Banker has written to say he will try to do something for us and another possible fundraiser in a pub in England but I cant give the details for that yet. So things are starting to move.

I am hoping that a few more people who enjoy the forum might find a few quid so these kids can have technological wizardry like play dough and colouring pencils  ;)

I was totting up the number of people who said kind things about the Bar/Restaurant Guide and how many things could be crossed off the list if each donated a fiver. It was quite a few. So can I respectfully ask, if you do use the guide, or intend leaving a copy for you guests, please donate something.

Toky has already set the way with alot more than a fiver.:D

Keith - the Donate button at the bottom of the CBF page (http://calis-beach.co.uk/bozalan_school.htm) does not then give you the normal PayPal option to send money as a gift.

If you can confirm the relevant PayPal account name here I will make a donation the normal way to be spent on anything the team want for the school.

Thank you  :) :)

FiG provided these schoolchildren with shoes, books and clothes many years back, when they, Fig, first set up. I will try to obtain photos and post here. You will see that they do need ongoing help.

The problem with some of the village schools is that the parents are not interested in helping either, most just want there children to finish school and help in the fields or house. This is why these schools become rundown. Good luck to the project I wish every success xx

Those children will have moved on by now Julie. It was as you said a long time ago that Fig helped out. It is the conditions they are learning in that is the biggest problem. We are trying to provide more than shoes and books this time. We the same as FIG provide other schools with much needed items but this school needs more than a quick fix now. The parents of most of these kids arent in a position to help. They can hardly keep themselves. This will be a long term project and we thank you for your support. Even if they do finish up in the fields their young lives will have been enhanced by our help which is why we do it when all said and done. There are loads of up to date photos of the present day children on the "Bozalan" project. Keith has long wanted a major project with one of the charities and this is the one he feels that is in most need and we thank him sincerely. Thanks for your help the other day by the way. xx

Another thought. We have helped numerous schools and good causes over the years and of course the longer we go on it will become necessary to revisit some places. Books, toys, shoes, clothes. uniforms computers.etc..nothing lasts forever. We are eternally grateful for the people on this forum and the people of who live here for their continued support.

I think also you need to put opportunity in front of kids today - of course if they attend dreary lessons in drab and damp surroundings with little exposure to books, computers or anything else that can inspire then they will end up in the fields because nothing as an exciting alternative has presented itself, and school is nothing more than necessary and boring.

You only have to find the spark. As Billy Connolly once explained, (something like) the greatest yachtsman the World has ever seen could be growing up in the tenements, but as he'll never even get the chance to even set foot on a yacht, he and the rest of us will never know and he'll do his 40 years in the shipyard like everyone else.

No yachts on the list but plenty to make school a lot more inspiring and comfortable.

I suspect that when Scunner updates the list, we'll find there's been a lot of anonymous pledges. I hope this is the case, rather than apathy.

Yes we do have a nice level of donations - I could have told you who they would be from before this even started - the same "usual suspects" that donate to most causes on here. I assume the other 8,950 members just want to use CBF to ask their questions and get their advice for free (saving paying a solicitor £200) and see no reason why they should want to give a little back - a box of colouring pencils for kids who have nothing or just keep the money in your pocket...difficult one :-\

Over 9,000 members on a website that we charge nothing for - and donations struggling to reach 20 after 3 days - absolutely bloody shameful. I'd love to post a list of the members who read the topic and walked on by - and how often they are members who came here with a problem that was solved here. People who were so grateful at the time, calling CBF "invaluable" and a "priceless" resource for people who have concerns. I guess I know what priceless means now...

What sort of people are they? "I love Turkey but not enough to give a fiver so kids can have a warm dry school" while asking which bank in Turkey is best to put their hundred grand into - thanks a bunch.

That is my final negative word on the subject I promise - many thanks to the kind folk who actually do give a sh1t.

Scunner

So, apathy it may well be then!!!! Disgraceful!:(
If you have read or are reading this thread, and it hasn't touched your heart, then it's a swinging brick you've got. :(
Pencils, colouring books, basket balls, story books......PENNIES!!!!! You've wiped your ar, nose with more I'm sure.
Slippers for 10 yes, 10 kids = £18. A decent pair here would cost that.
I understand that it's not a third world country we are talking about, but they're needy....very needy....Fact. It's not the kids fault they find themselves in this position, but if you have a heart, please give something. It doesn't have to be anything on the list, it could be a fiver, less than the cost of a pack of cigs.

Maybe we should all be charged to use the forum and the proceeds go to the charities :)when all the new visa rules were being discussed on here and everyone knew to come here to get the correct facts one night I counted up 45 members on here in one go (sad I know!)I agree it is shameful a fiver a head would amount to a lot of money and would go a long long way to the school project. Even if you dont have Paypal you could arrange to leave at a bar for someone from  the three C's to pick up.I have not forgotton that I said I will be leaving my Christmas card money to Animal Aid and even though we dont arive until April with Christmas long forgotton I will still leave it. Before I started going to Turkey I do admit I was quite materialistic but when I have seen people going through bins to hopefully make a bit of money and some people have so little, it has changed me and I believe this to be a good thing :)

People here, including us, already donate to charities and good causes, including the 3 c's.

I for one object to your above rant just because I have not donated via Paypal to the CBF account.
I support the 3C's and therefore support this campaign but not through CBF.
Please do not classify everyone who has not donated through CBF non supporters.

Well Fi, there's few as easily offended as those who go out of there way looking to be.

Can you believe that actually opposite to your view that I "classify everyone who has not donated through CBF non supporters", that I, probably know better than most who makes an effort to support local causes and who doesn't. Was my post directed at Andy & Pauline who work tirelessly to improve the lives of local animals? NO. Or Baz & Kaz the same? NO. Am I disgusted that Anne (mercury), Pete & Chrissie haven't stuck £20 in for the CBF cause, OF COURSE NOT. What about the ladies at FIG - not a penny from even one of them...no, not those guys either...

If you are looking to be offended you won't have far to look, living over in expat Turkey. Sadly you won't find it in this topic. I know exactly who I mean, so do you, and so do they. But thanks for the dramatics.

I don't think that is the case Fi, no one is stone throwing as far as I can see.  Us regulars know there is a lot goes on behind the scenes we never hear about here in the UK but there are THOUSANDS of members on this forum.  Thousands, who have received good, free advice (some also given by yourself and Eric) yet now they're asked to help these unfortunate children are turning a blind eye.
No one is asking us to say we've donated, no one is asking how much, it can be anonymous but The 3C's and Keith are asking for some much needed help.
I for one don't think a couple of quid is too much to ask for for the wealth of information given freely here.  So why is the money not flying in?

Lastly, please guys, keep this thread in the charitable spirit in which it is intended and let's have no rants or arguments.

Firo, you're very easily offended. I am well aware that lots of people do amazing work for charities over in the Fethiye area and I salute every one of you/them. Most admirable. If I did what all you guys do, I'd never even bat an eyelid at my previous post. I'd know personally how much I'd already done/contributed. It was aimed to tug at the heart strings of other members who haven't thought about making a contibution of any sorts.

I sort of knew that it woud be the same people donating to this cause but was hoping that we could tug a few heart strings. I really dont understand why people dont have more sympathy for these children. I know that we have HUGE support at the 3 C's. Our successes speak for themselves and without this support we couldnt manage and we are really grateful but please if the others could give even 5 pounds it is a big help. Fi. we know that you give us your support I am sure that you know he didnt mean you.

Just a thought

On 18 March 2010 scunner posted a topic entitled "Dolphinarium plans create major protest" which ran for 197 pages. To date it has been read 145, 713 times and has attracted 1968 replies and we all know the wonderfully successful outcome.

If the CBF community, for that is what it is to me, can help two mammals who couldn't help themselves, surely we can do the same for a small number of children.

PS hefty fine expected ;)

Please note the crossing off has started. So far (and it is complicated tying up payments to members and what they are for!) I have crossed off all those donations that were made for specific items on the list. Later I will have fun allocating the donations that didn't specify items - and there's a few.

If your donation/item isn't showing it is because I am still wrking on things - if you fear I may have missed you, don't feel bad about dropping me a line to say so!

I must say we really are cooking on gas now and the donations are so far very impressive. On behalf of CBF, 3Cs and Bozalan School I thank you so much...

Hi Karen, any stationary items for the children can be left at the 3C's charity shop at the Eyna restaurant in Calis on Mondays and Fridays between 11.00  and 2.00 or you can leave things with Erhan and Nalan at the Eyna restaurant when the shop is closed.  Or if you let us know when you are coming we can arrange for one of the committee to meet up with you.

The type of things that the children need are the basics like pencils, coloured pencils, coloured felt pens, rubbers, pencil cases, drawing paper and exercise books both lined and squared.

Thank you to everyone for supporting CBF's project to help Bozalan School.

I will do this as my own donation.
I am going to approch the lovely customer service at monarch to see if they will allow any extra weight allowance for this cause, as this is where i am going to struggle.

That is very kind of you Karen. However like June says please check this out with the airline first as you may well have problems. We officially wrote to all of the airlines, including Monarch, last year to see if as a bonafide charity the 3C's committee members could have a charity luggage allowance and the only airline that agreed to this was Thomas Cook. It seems that most of the airlines have their own charitable cause thet they support and do not extend this to others. Anyhow best of luck  and we hope that you have better luck than we did.

Just thinking out loud here (and knackered) - would using a little of the funds we raise to cover excess baggage costs be worth thinking about? I'm thinking that £8/kilo might be money well spent for (say) a kilo of colouring pencils - which must be loads of pencils? And of course it may not be charged.

Rod and Janet would have a better idea of whether this is worth the extra cost. They went out and bought the pencils and staionary for the other schools. I will ask them to reply to this.
Title: Introducing our 2012 Project - Bozalan School
Post by: Pi55y on March 13, 2012, 15:34:00 PM
I am not sure how many pencils etc. you get to the kilo so it is  difficut to price this up. However if anyone is charged excess baggage for these items, this could be as much as £10 a kilo so you would then have to build in another £10/28TL to the price of the pencils to compare whether it would be best buying in Turkey or UK.

I know that boxes of 10 average quality colour pencils were coming out at 6-8TL and that packs of felts were around 10TL when we priced all the items up at the stationers last week.  Also the 3C's are given a discount against school purchases by our Fethiye supplier so this will bring the price down slightly.

Glenn, even if we were to have a brilliant response to the CBF project and  if we were able to provide Bozalan with what they need before you come out in June and then later in the year (and there are lots of  bigs "if's" there as it is a major project and is unlikely to be sorted quickly), there are lots of other poor children at lots of other village school (and even some of the bigger schools) who could also do with a helping hand.

Any donations that you are able to bring out in your case, no matter how small, be it pencils, pens, rubbers, exercise books or even anything for the 3C's to use in our charity shop, in raffles or at tombola stalls to help raise money for these kids would be greatly appreciated.

None of the local charities would be able to achieve what they are doing without help from supporters. We all thank you for this help.

Hi Anne,

I have some items to cross off thanks to some wonderful donations today - I will do that this evening, and then I am working out where/which items to allocate the many donations that didn't specify items. I'll get that done and updated tomorrow. If I had known that doing a special project would result in me being so busy with work I'd have offered years ago :D - the very day we launched this the whole World decided to buy a property. After a grim 2011 I suppose that is very welcome  :)

Many thanks to everyone who has donated, every single one is so appreciated and will help make a REAL difference to the school days not just of the kids at the school but for the kids in many future years too. If I haven't emailed you back so far I am sorry but thank you!!!

For anyone coming over and wants to bring some stuff out Poundland (not Pound Savers or such like) has lots of useful things like packs of 36 colour pencils for £1 and 2 packs of 16 Felt Tips for £1, jumbo crayons, note books etc...

There are a whole heap of other things in Poundland in just the Stationery section alone that are on the list and would be great for the school.

poundland stock is very similar to what we sell at work, I'm pretty sure my boss will allow me to purchase these at cost so I will only be paying around 70p per pk.

I am looking at taking writing pencils, coloured pencils and felttip whatever i find thats the best value.

How many pupils does the school have and what age group are they?

As I said I know I will struggle with weight limit so will just bring what I can this time but will bring more in August every little bit help.

These are the kind of double desks and chair sets that we are looking to purchase for the children at Bozalan.  The model that we actually  saw in the shop was orange.  The supplier is kindly prepared to waive the KDV tax (similar to VAT).

These sets cost £70 each including cargo from the supplier's depot to the school.  We need 15 of these if we can raise enough money.

The desks at the school at the moment are very old wooden ones with lots of splinters and sharp edges and the children are sitting three to a desk in most cases - not the best way to learn.

To bring everyone up to date (or as up to date as I can get!!!) - the list has been regularly crossed off today. Things are taking a little bit longer because I am scared to death of putting someone's name next to their donation when they didn't want that! If I could ask one thing, can you let me know if you prefer your name to be withheld. Although I think you should tell the World you supported our project - we're proud of you and it might help others to see the people who are donating and join in.

Next job is to allocate the money raised where no specific items were chosen. I can tell you that we have several hundred pounds to allocate and add to the crossed off items. Where are we - less than a week in - and so far we went from a slow start to a very impressive fund raising in that time.

We are grateful for EVERY donation, the one pounds to the 500TLs - the fact that you want to help this school like we do is all that is important. On the subject of 500TL, I will write to the "Turkish buisness lady" mentioned above(after sending pi55y one of those spelling books!) to thank her - I would dearly love to tell you who it is but anonymity is a right and must be respected.

Just...thank you to everyone who has donated and to those yet to do so - please consider buying a light fitting or some slippers - it's bloody cold up there and as you know, in Turkey they leave their shoes outside!!! Try and do it before the end of the week - as it is my Bob Geldof "Just send me the ****ing money" event this weekend  ;)

Yes I agree Heather and it goes back to post 1 page 1 of this topic. With greatest of respect, Turkish people don't tend to offer to donate as much as we do, but if you ask them they are generally delighted to and very generously too. Not trying to stereotype, that is my experience of Turkish people and good causes and I hope that will help some of you give your restaurant/hotel/boat/tour shop/management company/estate agent friend a gentle nudge - it isn't even embarrassing to ask over there I promise :D

We as a family 3kids would and are willing to offer our time to them.
If in some way we could give extra help/time/money then please lett us know.
Well done to Scunner and CCC for making us aware.

I don't mind people knowing whether I donated, I never requested anominity (spelling?). But when you look at the list there is only a couple of grands worth of kit there. Some people have been very generous and donated about 5-10% of that. I would have liked to have thought that after a week Keith you would have been reporting that all items were ticked off and we were now ticking off on the 'nice to have' list as the 'basic essentials list' was fully subscribed. I could understand it if you launched it in children in need week or something similar. It takes all sort I suppose.

There is only a "couple of grand" there as you put it but we can only be grateful for those who want to give a little back for what CBF but more importantly Calis, Fethiye and Turkey has given them over the last decade or two of their life - which in many cases is a hell of a lot. I am so chuffed to see a £2 donation come in because someone cared enough to go to Paypal and show that children learning in the conditions we highlighted is simply unacceptable while we are more occupied by telling all the other CBF members of the scandal that the T bone steak at *wherever* has gone up a quid to 28 lira, or similar. Just to quantify that, 28 lira is enough to provide slippers for 6 kids for a year to stop them having to spend every school day walking around on mountain-cold concrete floors. So yes, it is not without frustration this...

It does "take all sorts" to quote you again Paul and we can look at the disappointments but you will go mad doing that, I promise. I'd love to reply to every cheap plug for some local transfer company or hotel with a "yes but they didn't help us when we needed them" graphic - I would literally love to, it would be great - but who cares really. I learned to concentrate on the positives in life and my inbox is full of them right now. I wish everyone could see the comments and selflessness that I can. That'll do for me and I'm sure that will do for the kids at Bozalan. One thing I do think is that everyone should not only get involved in fund raising, but also try and get the opportunity to visit some of these schools. It is both shocking and intoxicating - once you see what difference your (fairly meagre in the big scheme of things) efforts made for all these little guys, you are hooked. We just need more people to get hooked I suppose  :)

One last comment for those still reading - bewva (Paul) sounds very tough and uncompromising - but actually it was a conversation between him and I that started all this. If we don't make all our targets and buy everything on the list, blame Paul..!

Brilliant guys, keep those donations coming.  It's heartening to read that after a slow start we're on our way to ticking off the whole list.
I love the idea of a day helping labour wise too and would be more than happy to help out if needed during our May trip.

I've been thinking about this since my last post.
If the transfer companies were willing to donate a free trip there and back (or perhaps charge only for petrol) in one of their bigger mini buses I'm sure there would be more offers of help.  Just think of what could be achieved in a couple of visits with plenty of man power.

The 3C's had a really great sell out "Rockney" night at the Nil Restaurant this evening where we have been raising money to fund  future children's projects (final sum from this event still to be worked out).

But the highlight of the evening, which bought many of the committee near to tears,  was when five individuals, all who wish to remain anonymous, came up and gave us 100 TL each for the Bozalan project -  amazing - so another 500 TL to add to the running CBF total.

Keith, three of the donations came from people we did not know who are only visiting Calis - how kind is that? They heard us talking about the Bozalan project and the next thing we knew donations were being made.

May I be so bold as to make a suggestion Keith  8)

Rather than try to allocate the "free" money that has been donated against the list (which will be quite complex and time consuming) maybe just write a list of all those who have donated  with their amounts next to their name and the total at the bottom.

We could then keep the list as it stands for new donors and perhaps the free money could go towards the cost of labour for fitting the toilets which I believe is a very pressing matter. I think you said we have the ceramics already.

What do you think [?]

I am also wondering do we have plumbers and people good at DIY in our little CBF community who could volunteer their skills and time to do this work...

It would make for great publicity to have photos of volunteers doing something hands on like this....

A wee idea (light bulb above head)

I have been involved in the shoe box appeal.
We bought big packs  of pens, rubbers etc and pencil cases.

We then made a pencil case for each box with all the bits they would need. Say four pencils, rubber, sharpener, ruler, felt tips or coloured pencils and so on.
As there are  only 30 children would it be feasible to do that so that every child has his or her OWN stuff.

I always loved a nice pencil case :-\ ;)

I spoke to my son about the plumbing and he says it's done differently in the U.K. to Turkey, but he said it would probably be easy enough to do it. Unfortunately, he is not out until September when he is getting married, but kindly said you can give him a shout if you still need work doing.. Don't know how his wife will feel about him plumbing on his Honeymoon, but I am sure she could take a day out to shop with her dear Mum in Law.

Hi Heather, the shoe box appeal is a great idea and to give all the children their individual filled pencil cases would be a really nice gesture.  We need to put pencil cases on the list now! :D

When we calculated the cost of pens/felts etc on the list we were looking at full packs of crayons, pens, felts etc per pupil which would give them some to use and some spare to go in the cupboard so they have some supplies for the future.

I read this topic and thought straight away i would like to donate.

Here's my problem, i don't have a paypal account and don't say it's easy to get one !! this is me  :)

I am over May so i can either bring my donation with me, or i can transfer into a bank account.

Maybe there are other people reading this topic that don't have and don't want to have pay pal account but would like to donate so can we arrange bank account transfer, i don't know, it's just a question

Patty

Patty, we have arranged something similar for Sunlover.  We have an empty UK account that we use specifically for the 3C's for situations like this, for example for payment of the charity calendars, Promises auction UK payments etc.  The money is paid in at the UK end and we then pay out of our account here in Turkish lira at the exchange rate at the time for you so it saves on any transfer fees. All transactions in this account are monitored by our Treasurer

If you are happy to make a donation this way I will e-mail you details of the account.  You can let us know if there is a specific item that you would like to purchase and I can then let Keith know so it can be crossed off.  If the donation is for a non specific item then I will let Keith know the amount of the donation so that it can be added to the CBF running total.

Very useful word.

Great thanks go out to my dear friends Cenk & Olga at Interturk estates who have most generously paid for a tahterevalli for Bozalan School. No Turkish primary school should be without a tahterevalli.

Thank you Cenk & Olga. Of course we all knew what a tahterevalli is. Just to be sure, scroll down  :)

We are hoping that people who give their business to specific hotels and transfer companies will approach them to ask if they will donate to the cause Patty - they can also explain just how much free publicity some of them get from people on this forum. I can only assume that not many members have asked their hotelier/transfer chums as donations from local businesses has been frankly quite dire (with notable exceptions).

It is possibly the most disappointing part of this forum that the same people who (as just one example) jump in immediately to offer to rent their villa/apartment to someone who joined CBF looking for a place to stay, do not have the same motivation to post saying thanks for all you do for us CBF, I sent a fiver for the kids. They see the forum as a place to make money, certainly not a place to give any. I truly believe that when I see people reading this topic, many simply haven't got a clue that it is directed at them. It doesn't even cross their mind to put THEIR hand in THEIR pocket.

The idea that I have been here offering free advice and a place for people to find new friends and to compare notes for nearly ten years, sometimes 18 hours a day and that still isn't worth giving even TWO POUNDS once a decade is such a sad thought. Still, we'll carry on giving and those people will carry on taking - c'est la vie as they say in Calais Beach.

I would like to offer my personal thanks to everyone who has supported this super CBF and 3Cs project.

I have now made two visits to Bozalan School so have the benefit of knowing just how much difference the monies being raised will make, not only to children currently at the school but to generations to come who will now have the chance of an education in a warm, dry environment with the basic tools required.

The list is not complete yet but the tenacity and generosity of CBF members is getting it there bit by bit - well done to all so far.

This was never going to be an easy project to complete in a short period of time but is achievable I'm sure.   :)

BUT it is not just about helping the 30 kids who are attending the school. This project will change Bozalan School FOREVER - we are helping children who aren't even born yet  :)

Just a quick update - after a lull in donations we have had quite a few. My cunning plan was to announce donations one at a time to keep this topic at the top, but that might take too long and make our donors think perhaps we didn't receive it, or that we couldn't be bothered to acknowledge. We did receive it and we can't wait to acknowledge all your kindnesses. Hopefully I will bring things up to date in full by tonight.

Yes we are indeed able to Anne and will do - I am nervous about allocating the money myself (although spending other people's money is a great job!) but have had discussions and will advise soon. With that will come a total - money is coming in to 3Cs bank account and directly to their shop so my running total isn't the full total so I will have to get the calculator out  :)

We were worried and I still am - I want to ensure we cross off everything  :) - but the trick is to forget the apathy and concentrate on the target, and most importantly the positives of which there are many. Amazing donations, simply amazing - all of them, it doesn't matter how much was donated, just that someone cared enough to take the time to donate and help. When I get to sit down and compare notes with Pete & Chrissie I will post the total so far.

This project can go on forever (well, until we have indeed crossed everything out) but the initial plan was to conclude it all in time for the carnival. It would be fantastic if we could do that. Thank you to everyone who supported us, and to those thinking about it, stop thinking  ;)

Not going through the 17 pages again to check this but just in case anyone doesn't realise:

If you donate with funds ALREADY in your paypal account via the 'gift' option then there are no paypal charges added. If, however, you donate through a debit or credit card linked to your account then there IS a fee to pay. You then have the option of paying it yourself or making the good cause pay it by deducting it the amount they receive.

Stoop,

you can still do a "gift" if your PayPal balance is empty - its an echeque - I just selected the pay "friends and family" option which says no cost - but warns that you get no protection from the sellers misdeeds !

Thank you for a donation of £50 from two CBF regulars, user names Ian and Scunner. Let me explain :D

Ian decided (quite wisely I would say) to list his property in the CBF FSBO (For Sale By Owner) section and sent me £50 to do so. Now talk about a jammy git, he sold his property the next day!!! I would like to suggest that shows how powerful CBF is, but I hadn't even added his property to the forum, let alone got an enquiry for it!

Ian doesn't want the £50 back and I don't feel I can keep it, so we decided its £25 from me and £25 from Ian for the Bozalan cause  :)

I have been looking at school supply sites and they are quite expensive.
However I have been looking at the ASDA site tonight and there are great bargains on it.
EG the quality pencil are 10 for £2  yet in WH SMITHS the same pencils are 5.99.
I have contacted Chrissie and asked her to let us know what if anything will be useful or what is urgently needed.
Just in case we ALL get pencils.:D

An update on our Bozalan School project - things are quiet on here but very productive behind the scenes...

Firstly can we say thank you to Highlander for organising the last minute Grand National Sweepstake, everyone who grabbed the opportunity and of course to the lovely Heather07 for winning it and donating the winnings back to the fund. Not many websites could sell out a grand national sweep in 24 hours.

Secondly, we have totalled up all the monies donated here in the UK via Paypal, and in Turkey directly to the committee members and the shop and once we have confirmed everything we will announce how much we have all raised so far. I can say that based on the monies donated IN TURKEY ALONE, an order has been placed with the carpenters for many of the cupboards and drawers in the list. As mentioned previously, the highly successful coffee morning organised by Anne & Barb paid for the 21 lockers cupboard set outright!

Thirdly, Mavis emailed me to try and shock me and she certainly did - the Ladies from the Embrace Charity, who themselves have done so much for local causes have decided to donate 1000 Lira to the CBF Bozalan School Project. I nearly choked on my Frosties! Bearing in mind Embrace have their own projects on the go this is such a touching and kind gesture - thank you so much ladies, it's great to know that you are with us.

Finally (for now!) - thank you to EVERYONE who supported us. The £50s are wonderful but from the heart so are the two quids - when kids have so little we can do great things with £2 - and it possibly sounds a bit naff I guess but I hope you all realise that every donation changes little lives for the better.

Tomorrow I shall cross off lots more things from the list. It goes without saying that if you would like to make a donation there's still time  ;)

Cheers guys!

This is when the power of the forum becomes a forcer greater than we ever knew.  I just cant get over how generous, kind, thoughtful, and inventive people are.  Without any prompting, folk have found all sorts of ways to raise money for this worthy cause. So many people know the 'B' word now and it is still spiralling. This rolling stone has gathered plenty of moss!!!!

The combined donations given in Turkey have been allocated to some of the bulkier furniture items on the list. Please take a look at how our list is now - amazing progress. Thanks to all the donors who gave their money over there. We still have the money donated via Paypal here in the UK (that wasn't donated for specific items) to allocate and that will cross off plenty more hopefully.

I would also like to add my own special thanks to Mavis and the ladies of Embrace for contributing such a large amount to the project :D.

Hi One of our local schools is changing uniform colour and through the local paper offered it to any charities in need.
I made contact and copied in the Bozalan Topic so they could see that I was genuine!
I requested the white pe tops, black shorts and plimsols and the many girls kilts that were on offer.
This is a private school age range 3 yrs - 12 yrs

This is the response back - will only collect what I know will fit in the car.
Hope that this can be put to good use.
Will be out in August.

Dear Carol,

Just to let you know that we have decided here at Kingscourt School to split any uniform donations which we may receive after our second hand uniform sale on May 16th between yourselves and another school in Gambia.

I have put out an appeal to parents telling them a little about both.

We don't have much storage here so I wonder if you could possibly pick up your share of the donations as soon as possible after May 16th? If there turns out to be too much, you could always let the other charity have any you can't take if that helps the space you have left in your car! I don't know how much we'll get in at this stage but, naturally, you need only take what you can transport.

If you could let me have a telephone number for you I will give you a ring to arrange a time for you to come and view what there is.

Thank you again for getting in touch, we're very glad to be able to help out the rural Turkey schools.

Kind regards

Kingscourt School

That is so touching...I think I speak for the rest of the committee when I say thank you very much for taking the time to think about Bozalan school and indeed all the poor schools that we help. I know that if Bozalan cant make use of all the items then there are other schools that will if this is OK with you?

Mercury,

Of course, any of the local schools/charities can make use of it.
Will collect what they have as soon as I hear from them.  Will also mention that we can take any unused/unwanted exercise books, pens, pencils etc.  Can then store here indoors until Marc and Jenny leave for their lovely drive!  I on the other hand am flying!
Piffy, I still have your number somewhere so will make contact in August once its arrived!

Keith will be updating the list shortly but we are nearly there - just a few more of the big items to buy. So one last major effort is needed and we should eventually get there.

I have one more thanks but I need to check if I can name yet another very generous donor.

Thanks to everyone who has supported our project and to those who will in future support us in our quest to tick off the whole list. I'll never forget who you are and if you need our support or advice on anything at all, we are always here to help if we can.

List posted from page 1 as requested...

Can you put Barbara and me down to buy 3 more desks please. We still had money from the coffee morning and gifts donated to us for the coffee morning which was jewellery donated by Jennifer Lilley and the train ticket donated by Christine Ellyard and were sold at the auction for over 500T. A huge thamks to themL so we have enough for the 3 desks. Thanks Keith.  The money we have left over will go into the pot now.

Lesley, pens etc can be dropped off at the 3Cs shop, which is under the Eyna restaurant on Calis prom. Just look for our turquiose advertising sails. The shop is open on Monday & Fridays 11am - 2pm, but if it's closed, you can leave them with Erhan, who owns the restaurant for us.

Many thanks

We have 5 large bags full of uniform.
Can someone from the 3c's e mail me a contact number so we we can arrange to meet up and hand these clothes over.  The car should arrive on the 26th or 27th July.
However, the weather here is so wet I have not had the chance to wash it through and get it dried.  I am working almost up to the day that we fly.  So not sure if I will be able to deliver it fresh and sparkly.
Many thanks
Carol

Just out of curiosity, what's still left to purchase for the school?
  :)

have today opened up the bags of clothes, plenty of purple jogger bottoms, purple rugby shirts, girls purple kilts, boys black knee length cord shorts, some purple blazers, some hats and scarfs.  The items that were too tatty I have taken to the local amenity tip.
Must be a posh school the clothes have come from Harrods of Knightsbridge! :D
Have vacuum packed the clothes today, that way they do not take us as much room in the car.

We are in the final straight - pretty much just the remaining desk unit sets to go. It's not easy to keep up with where we are, what with Highlander creating do many new fundraising initiatives :D But once the Olympics one is done, I'll report exactly. Great efforts from so many, not least our H.
