Title: Hand Luggage with Thomas Cook
Post by: Ray1951 on March 10, 2012, 11:41:18 AM
Thomas Cook are now weighing hand luggage prior to boarding. If you exceed the 5K allowance, which includes anything you buy from Duty Free then they are charging you £40.

I had mine weighed at Glasgow Airport last year (but at check in, before duty free) and I was over 5kg - which I knew anyway - and was charged £20 and had to have it put in the hold. I'd be incredibly surprised if duty free weight is being included in the 5kg - did this happen to you?

Yes & I'm from Glasgow too. I usually pay an additional £40 pre-flight for an extra 10K.  This weighing before boarding but after duty free is the latest 'we've got you now situation'. My laptop and personal things plus 2 x 1 lire bottles would be over 5K.

Definitely - two litres of duty free must be 2.5kg+ alone. I do hope this is not going to be the norm...

If it's true and adopted by most airlines it would surely be disastrous for the duty free shops as we'd all wait and buy on the plane. Which would also suit the likes of Thomas Cook too of course.

As you say Scunner, a smart move by Thomas Cook, as people would need to buy duty free on the flight.  Sometimes it's as cheap to by alcohol at the supermarket and just wrap it securely and put it in your main luggage - not ideal but this weighing hand luggage just before you board the flight will be the norm.  :-\

I was reading about this on another site the other day and someone posted a printout from TC to state that duty free is NOT to be included in the weight. I'll see if I can locate it.

I have been known to go into Tesco Express AFTER checking in and loading up with goodies to bring back to Calis - OOOPS.  Personally I'd rather have the Tesco munchies than duty free SO, where does all this stop?

This is a bummer if true as I usually stock up at duty free and Boots the Chemist when through passport control.Definately puts me over the 5kg limit.Any website available where I can check this?

sorry if this sounds like i have spit my dummy out but i would prefer to give my overweight duty free away to another passenger for free or smash into a bin than pay them another penny. it makes my blood boil just how low TC will stoop.
Alternative book with monarch you get 10kg carry on ;)

karen

or could just buy dutyfree in dalaman when land might be a bit more but not £40 worth

Or indeed easyjet where you can have as many kilos as you like as long as your dimensions are ok and you can lift it into the overhead lockers.

I agree with Karen, last year with T.C.so as not to have any spare weight allowance going back to UK on holiday I packed our cases with large packs of toilet rolls and anything else useful,if Ive paid T.C. for 20 kilos I,ll make sure I use it,my family in the UK had toilet rolls for ever and a day!!!!!

Easyjet have no weight restrictions, just a size guide AND you can take your duty free in addition.  Be interesting to hear from anyone else who experiences this situation with TC. Problem is, once one carrier catches on to this  ----------- !

Well the answer is to TC don't buy anything.  I am sure they are not in the position for this type of outcome.

Just done live chat with ThomasCook site.
5kg does not include duty free and duty free can be carried in separate bag.
Try live chat yourself if you want further reassurance.

t's & c's:

Please note, at some UK airports a charge for a Gate Bag will now be applied. This means if customers arrive at the boarding gate with more then one item of hand baggage (excluding airport shopping) the extra item/s will be taken and put into the hold. There is a fee of £40.00 per bag that will be charged.

The hand baggage chaos was caused by the airlines themselves when they started charging for hold baggage - of course people are going to try and get by with hand baggage alone if possible. I never used to have hand baggage and now I am one of the people competing for overhead locker space which is quite obviously insufficient if everyone on the flight has hand baggage. There never used to be any problem finding space before they change the rules on hold baggage.

On a recent flight from Glasgow to Belfast (a ridiculously short journey, seatbelts on, seatbelts off, seatbelts back on  :) ) easyjet announced to the boarding queues that due to the amount of hand baggage, anyone who's baggage didn't fit in the cage would have it put in the hold and charged £40. Two minutes later they must have realised they had a serious problem, becuase they announced that they needed volunteers to have their hand baggage put in the hold for which there would be no charge.

But they caused this.

Hubblebubble said it too.  We just have to wait and see what transpires BUT let's face it, if there's a way to screw the travelling public then the carriers WILL find a way. We are already paying higher costs for flights because of the 'greed' factor of the carriers. We all want cheap flights to our favoured destinations but the only way we can be heard is to 'stand together' and where WE can hit them, then we should do so.

How are you proposing to hit them? Everyone boycotting them is great until they are the cheapest then everyone walks off and leaves you standing alone  ;)

Past experience of TC has proven that they can make the rules up as they go along. I think i may have mentioned before when there were five of us traveling last yr and i had only booked  and paid luggage for three when we checked in i was a bit unsure if we were overweight and said  to the lad checking us in i was relieved they weren't, he replied there are five of you traveling 5 prs x 20kg = 100kg allowance "you are well under your allowance mrs rose". Open mouthed i pointed out no i only paid for three he said it wouldn't of mattered  the booking form reads 5 persons so i would allocate you 100kg. But would this happen again if the luggage was overweight...i think not!
I just think TC especially, try to sqeeze every penny possible out of us, i am not tight but i won't spend 1p more that nessercery with them. i do everything possible like take the children's juice bottles empty and ask witherspoons to fill them  with water when we have a drink there defore departing, take a sandwich on board (they probably stop that soon and i'll have to resort to eating a jar of baby food lol) and i wont buy there duty free either. i have had bad experiences with them in the past and there customer relations leaves a lot to be desired.

We are traveling with monarch in a couple of wks for the first time in a few yrs iam sure this will be an intersting experience...i keep you posted.

I haven't been with easyjet as they don't fly from brum so hoping this might be something to come in the future.

So,can you still have a small handbag plus your hand luggage?????Or does you handbag count as your hand luggage?????

With easyjet and TC we have found that Mrs Scunner has to put her handbag in her hand luggage. Sometimes. Sometimes is it so important and sometimes they don't even mention it at all. When it is important, they hold up the queue at the gate while she opens her little case, forces it in, then struggles to zip it back up again. Then, once she reaches the plane, she takes it out again. We have even been told that a teddy bear being held by one of the girls would have to go into her hand baggage. What a ridiculous way to hold up a queue but once again, they cause it :D

Think you'll find with most airlines that you can't have both - bag and handbag!  I usually do what Mrs Scunner has done and put a small handbag inside my hand luggage, then when on the plane the bag goes in overhead locker and handbag stays with me! :D

Crazy really.

Thankyou all for clearing that up for me.My sister is coming over on the 31st of this month. She has never flown before and would hate to cause her any hassle before she boards. Will just have to curtail my duty free requests.I'm surprised Thomas Cook hasnt decided to weigh passengers before and after they check in........oops have I just given them an idea for future fleecing of the public?

I am not totally sure it is just the greed of the carriers though, looking to book internal flights in the Uk I was quite amazed at how high a proportion of the fare was 'taxes' on top of which the airport itself added a '£5 airport development fee' to be paid by each passenger before security.
personally i think the whole business model is wrong when the airlines are relying on the various 'extras' to generate profit and creating so much customer bad feeling. Is this however partly due to a government that is always looking for the next thing it can 'tax to the hilt' and a paying public who are now desperate to make their hard earned cash go further.

If you think that's bad then try Ryanair! Handbag has to go in hand luggage. Weight and size is a must and they will not combine weights for two or more passengers - so you get massive queues whilst people shuffle items between cases so that they are not overweight in one. Ludicrous!
