Title: Hand Luggage with Wheels
Post by: Ray1951 on March 22, 2012, 22:36:52 PM
Just had a call from a friend who told me that Thomas Cook were stopping people taking small suitcases with wheels as hand luggage. They insisted that all hand luggage fitted into the measuring frames and they were being VERY strict - no leeway whatsoever. If your hand luggage had wheels it had to go in the hold and if, combined with your main luggage, weighed more than the weight you had paid for, you are being charged £12 per kilo extra.  This was on a TC flight out of Manchester. What next???

Total rubbish Ray - possibly even more unlikely than your last TC report that they are now weighing duty free. As for hand luggage not fitting into the measuring frames, if it is the wheels that prevent it fitting then it doesn't fit. There is simply no possibility that hand luggage with wheels cannot be taken on board anymore - nearly all of it has wheels these days!

I've got £50 that says this is total junk - anyone care to take up the bet? Loser gives £50 to the Bozalan School project...

I believe that the weight restriction and hand luggage rules should be enforced.

They stopped us taking our hand luggage in October because it was a couple of inches bigger than the frame thing. They were letting loads on with wheels that did fit though (and loads on with bigger hand luggage than ours that obviously never went to Mrs Jobsworth to check in).

If it is within the measurements that they dictate it can go as hand luggage whether it has wheels or not. The clue is in the measurements!

Load of bullucks!

My guess is someone has been caught out trying to get too much weight on board and feel a little peeved.

I have however seen Ryanair stop people (happened to me last October) at the gate and ask them to fit the hand luggage in the measurement thingy... and so they bloody should! Some people get away with murder on what they class as hand luggage.

At the end of the day ALL carriers will find a way to screw us but if you check out the TC website you will see that the size of hand luggage
has changed from last year - F A C T !  The use of semi bad language is NOT appreciated. Some people on the forum think they know it all.  I have only imparted information given to me or factual happenings in which I have been involved.

£50 bet Ray - are you up for it or not, you do sound confident :D

Oh and for the record, I don't see anyone in this topic who "think they know it all" - just we've been on here a long time and can spot the difference between fact and second hand gossip. I don't know it all about your friend's story but I'll tell you exactly how this ludicrous story came about:

Your friend's hand baggage didn't fit in the dimensions frame. Had it not been for the wheels, it would have, it was a close run thing. As it didn't fit, it isn't permissible in the cabin (nothing new there) and it had to be put in the hold, for which there is a fee. When you spoke to him, he told you it had to go into the hold "because of the wheels" - which, upon hearing you came here to tell us luggage with wheels cannot be taken on TC flights as hand baggage.

I know I'm right on this one Ray - I am, aren't I  :)

Sorry you didn't appreciate my 'semi bad language' but I get really annoyed when people complain about things that they can avoid if they just read/stick to the rules. It's not rocket science to read the terms and conditions before you turn up at the airport. I'm sure most people do this but then there are others who either don't do it or just ignore it and try and blag their way through check-in hoping they can get away with a little extra. No good moaning if they get caught! No sympathy from me for holding up the queue I'm in!

So - YES FTC do have a smaller allowance for hand baggage. They are bottom of the allowances for size and weight! They are miserly... but they are the rules and are printed in plain English.

Easy Jet:  You can take one piece of hand baggage into the cabin with you -no bigger than 56 x 45 x 25cm incl wheels- which must fit comfortably into the baggage gauge. 10kg

BA: Your main piece of hand baggage is up to the dimensions 56cm x 45cm x 25cm (22in x 18in x 10in), including the handle, pockets and wheels.
Your bag must fit into the bag gauge, available at the check-in area. 23kg.

FTC: Each person is allowed to carry one 5kg piece of hand luggage on to the plane up to 43cm x 28cm x 23cm. 5kg

Ryanair: Strictly one item of cabin baggage per passenger (excluding infants) weighing up to 10kg with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm is permitted. (handbag, briefcase, laptop, shop purchases, camera etc.) must be carried in your 1 permitted piece of cabin baggage.

Monarch: Ooops! Take care to comply with our hand baggage restrictions or you will be charged £50 / €60 to have your bag put in the hold. One piece of cabin baggage per person to include handbags and laptops + one standard size carrier bag of goods purchased from the departure airport. Hand luggage dimensions must not exceed 56cm x 45cm x 25cm (including handles and wheels) and must not weigh more than 10kg.

Thomson: Each customer is entitled to a check-in allowance of up to 15kg baggage and a maximum 5kg for hand baggage (max. dimensions: 55cm x 40cm x 20cm).

Jet2: Hand luggage: One small item no heavier than 10kg and measuring a maximum of 56 x 45 x 25 cm (including handles and wheels).

So you can take one bag and as many infants as you like, whatever they weigh - bit rude to class kids as baggage though  ;)

Not long since returned from a jet 2 flight for which we had prepaid for 1 case ( 22kg) and had 2 free 10kgs of handluggage. One of the freebies was a wheelie case but well within the dimesnions including handle and wheels and a rucksack again would pass scrutiny. On both the out and return legs we were asked if we minde our handluggage being stowed in the hold at no cost as they had so many passengers who had only opted for handluggage there wasnt going to be enough room in the overheads! i saw some very generous cases being hoisted into those lockers . How long I wonder before they change that rule. you can easily go away for a couple of nights with a 10kg case- well I imagine you can- i cant!

Yes I've had that on Jet2 and easyJet - I always volunteer to have ours put in the hold if they ask - I hate having to find space anywhere other than directly above my seat :D, and there's nothing worse than everyone going forward when getting off the plane - and your bag is 10 rows back because that was the only space left  :)

Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place but have just checked on Manage Booking FAQs. Hand luggage 55cms x 40cms x 20 cms.  I haven't been able to find the measurements you gave Stoop.

Hope these measurements are correct or the new cabin bags we bought recently will be obsolete!

Stoop,
Where have you seen the EasyJet 10k max cabin luggage weight?
I can only see max dimensions, don't want to get caught out,

Post by: Scunner on March 23, 2012, 16:34:22 PM
No not 10kg on easyJet - it's any weight as long as you can lift it (yourself) into/out of the overhead lockers. On one flight the cabin staff got very shirty when a girl asked for help to get her case down, even though she explained she had injured her shoulder. I got it down for her, as she had a lovely pair of shoulders.

Just back from the pub so I will put the link up tomorrow. Think I got it from the FTC website and it was. Plied and pasted. Hope it's wrong 'cause it seems a bit small!

Wish you had been wrong Stoop. These new sizes are tiny and none of the many pieces of hand luggage I have comply. The airports are littered with dimension frames, both in the check-in hall and pre security, all of which accommodate my hand luggage with room to spare!  Presumably TC must have invested in new dimension frames for use at the gates if reduced sizes are being applied. Looks like I might have to resort to plastic bags!

Not sure you can buy cases that small! We invested in a new one to comply with Ryanair last October as we wanted to take our full allowance but not be oversized.

It will certainly put me off going with them in future unless the price is too good to resist.

Have been searching but only supplier of this very small size appears to be Flylite and delivery is 7 days so no good for me.  I guess a lot of people will be in for a shock at the airport, from my findings 99.9% of cabin luggage appears to be larger than Thos Cook dimensions.

Mine 40x34x15 - cubic capacity 21.76 but does not comply
TC   43x28x23 - cubic capacity 27.69

I think we can safely say that IF there's a way to screw extra money out of the travelling public, the carriers WILL find a way.

Without doubt! I see ryanir have been labled dodgy for the way they try to sell their insurance. If you don't want it you have to scroll down a check list until you find the correct 'no insurance required' which is in between something like Luxemburg and Lithuania! I wonder how many just go through without realising they have bought it?

So I think the outcome of this post is that you CAN take your hand luggage if it has WHEELS, but make sure you check FTC's sizes as they are much smaller than other airlines, and if you have a case that fits for Easyjet, Jet2 etc etc then there is a 100% chance it WILL NOT fit in the FTC cage and they will charge you to put it in the hold (unless you are lucky).

Be careful out there ;-)

Thos Cook hand luggage dimensions are now back to:

55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm

book.flythomascook.com/checklist/baggage/

Also for anyone flying from Manchester I can confirm that they are not checking or weighing hand luggage at the departure gate.

yes, thomas cook dimensions are fine....55 x 40 x 20......Stoop I opened your link and thought you had lost the plot!!! Glad to hear they are not weighing, but Im not taking a chance. Spoke to a friend who flies regularly with Ryanair and he takes the big bags for life that you get at Tescos, Asda etc!!!! I know it doesnt look classy, but they fit the measurement restrictions and weigh next to nothing, so virtually all kilos are belongings and not case! :)  By the way, does anybody know if you can take bacon in hand luggage to Turkey...??

You are not supposed to Sue but lots do.
If I take bacon I usually put it in the hold rather than hand luggage as its a lot colder in there than in the cabin

Sue TC not weighing at check in,but weighed my nephews at the gate, that was gatwick don,t know if Manchester the same. Can go thru your end Sue all depends on how they feel this end wether it comes in or not,if you are stopped,I know some that have and some that haven,t as always here, all depends on the person in front of you.

Our experience has been that if your checked in luggage is not over then they don't bother with your hand luggage at check-in.  They were not weighing or checking dimensions at the departure gate in Manchester on Friday and there was no evidence of luggage frames.

I flew from Newcastle last week and they didnt even look at my hand luggage never mind weigh it. It is quite a big bag on wheels and I took a trunki through for my 20 month old daughter too no problem.
Im a thomas cook fan at the min as they blocked off an empty seat next to me as I was flying alone with my daughter.
That will prob annoy all the people who will say why should you get special treatment when travelling with infants :D

I am flying from Gatwick today (yeh!) with Easyjet not TC but I will try and see if TC is doing any weighing when we pass by their boarding gates.
In fairness to TC when I flew back with them in October there was a lady travelling on her own with a toddler and a baby she was doing her utmost to entertain them but the passenger in front of her complained to one of the cabin crew to ask her to do something about the children. The cabin girl very politely pointed out the lady was doing her best to keep them entertained so there was nothing she could do.Some of us other passengers mucked in to help entertain and it turned out to be a really nice flight, (well for the ones that were not moaning) and on that occasion I did think well done Thomas Cook :)

on the subject of children annoying other passengers - to avoid discomfort to all they should allocate all families together - this way all the children would entertain each other and not disturb passengers with no families
