20 to 25 tl last year, even less if you had a big group and haggled
Now a cooperative and 50 tl. :o
Still cold spaghetti fish or chicken, optional chips at extra 5tl and 6 for a small beer.
:(
-
Just another new season rip off to add to the list.
-
Total rip off :(
sales will be going down at that price, i certainly would not pay that for sitting on a boat like sardines and eating cold/bland spaghetti with fish or chicken :o
-
Can anyone tell me if operators such as Jerry Boat have to comply with those prices.
-
Linda I have taken this quote below from another topic you posted on...
"Fethiye big boat trips now a cooperative and charging 50 tl now"
Does this mean the big boat owners have got together and are now operating as a cooperative - which makes sense to me and long overdue considering how much it must cost to run and maintain a boat and when it runs empty/half empty all season ...
This I would assume excludes Jerry and others who run the smaller boats for limited numbers.
It might be worth bearing in mind that boat trips prices have been ludicrously low for years now and hardly risen at all, if at all actually.
I wonder if these prices will hold (they didn't last year) but that may be its the only way they are going to survive long term.
-
Nichola - is it not the case that the boats do not travel so far out as they used to. The present Mrs H maintains that they are not allowed to.
-
We agree Nichola. We all want better but to provide better the businesses need profits. The rip off occurs if the improvements don't come. Same with Restaurants Bars Hotels. Just take a look at the improvements the whole Fethiye area has made over the last 10/12 years. For the businesses to progress there has to be profits and competition will keep the rip off to a minimum. To extend the seasons and to attract new "punters" standards have to improve. Same Fethiye or here in the English Lake District.
-
I think we have to be careful with the use of the term "rip off".
If the price advertised is 50tl and you are charged 50tl then you are not being ripped off. Whether or not you are being over-charged is another matter.
As I understand it there has been a substantial increase in fuel costs but I couldn't comment on the correlation nbetween that and the increased charges.
As regards the improvements made were these paid for by Bar/Restaurants and/or Boat operators through business rates or by Fethiye residents through general taxation[?]
-
kayakebab - did you pay through an agent or at the harbour.

I don't know H :o
To be honest its years since I went on a boat trip until last year through the forum I discovered Atlantis (?) and Jerry's boats and then we went on three. And excellent value and brilliant food on both although Jerry had the edge with the food.

...or through the nose... ;)

Carol and Tayfun some peoples choice! available on line £10.00 pp 28.50TL at today's rate.

Which is down to Dalya (?) as well as Jerry :).
-
As with the bars and restaurants. It's their business, their decision. They will either reap the rewards or suffer the consequences.
-
Yes; I was very surprised actually - better for traditional Turkish food than most restaurants in Fethiye I would say :D
-
Been there done that with the cheaper ticket price only to find the loaded price is when you are contained on board. With children in tow and the ever ending rounds of staff tempting the children with treats at hugely inflated prices how do you deny the children their pleasure. On one of the larger boats last season we were charged 8tl for a lolly that was available widely on land at 1.50tl and everything else available on board at the same percentage premium. Cheaper tickets on the larger boats are plainly a false economy and with the smaller tours it does appear to offer much better value all round. Jerry for 2012 - at least i know what to expect
-
Yes Nichola, the big boats, I assume Jerry will be separate.
We booked at the harbour this morning, just turned up on spec.
It does make sense to merge people onto a few boats rather than lots mainly empty but the price hike is crazy and I won't be going on as many, and won't be buying any extras on the ones I do go on
-
Well, you have to hand it to them......
They certainly know how to make what will probably
be a bad enough season for them as it is, even worse.
-
Jerry's boat for me everytime.Dont like the bigger boats with the loud Boom,Boom,Boom music, inedible food and being hassled by the young lads to buy drinks.Never feel relaxed on the big boats where on Jerrys I always come back bronzed, tired but happy!
-
Here's a thought (yes I know I shouldn't......)
Boat trip last Septemeber 2011 - 40tl = £ 17.80 (ish)
Boat trip May 2012 - 50tl = £ 17.60 (ish).
My memory is that we paid 40tl on a small boat - less than 12 of us which we much prefer and accept that their may be a premium for same. Would not go on one of the large boats.
Of course if the charge was only 25tl last year then that's a toally different kettle of fish (if you'll pardon the pun.)
ps I will refrain from posting the same arguement on the Efes thread:(
-
Yes agreed John but for those of us living here its no consolation as we deal always in tl, and I bet the cost won't drop if the exchange rate drops...
The charge last year forr a whole calis boat was 350 I think, and is going to be 350 or on some 400 this yearr divided by 12people is 33 tl
Obviously more per person if less than the 12 people max.
There is just no comparison between the quality of the large and small boats.
I won't go on a big one again unless I really have to.
Someone told me that they tried this last year but ended up having to rethink and the high price didn't last long, hopefully by telling everyone on here they will realise that business isn't booming and think again.
-
:D this is all part of the bargaining, they throw you a red herring price, you complain and they bring it down to a 20% increase and you think you've won:Djust like the market, just like the Efes.
;)
-
we saw tickets that he can already sold at 5otl . so they really are trying to charge those prices. :o
-
Heard this about the boat trips a few years ago, then, when over in Fethiye saw boards offering £1.99, (yes the £ sign,) tend to agree with Tinks, the efes and the boat trips will come down soon enough, but think on principal, its not good charging 5tl for a portion of chips,
-
OluDeniz trips are around £12.
-
Spoke to jerry this week and his boat trips for 2012 are 40ytl (£14) at todays rate..:D
Jerry,s boat trips for us all the time, great host, great food, fishing, what more do you want...
i can see Jerry is going to be even busier than usual this year..
-
We have enjoyed so many wonderful days out with Jerry and his good lady. But I have to admit that I much prefer it when there are between 12 and 16 passengers on board. And here's how I really like it the most..

I have been reading this and the one about the price of beer with interest. Sometimes I wonder if some Brits living in Turkey believe that the local people owe them a living. The local traders are not exempt or immuned from inflation, taxes and duties. Boats need to be maintained and staff need to be paid. These have got to be passed on. Most of the people involved in tourism in the Fethiye area have got to make their living for a year in a four month tourist season. Most of the bars that stay open during the winter are lucky to probably break even. They make their money from the many tourists that visit the area.
I have seen the bars during the winter and some may have only one or two people drinking. At the cost of electric and heating there is no way that they are breaking even. In many cases they staying open is providing a service to the Expat community.
I have recently seen threads on here about Turkey having the second most expensive fuel in the developed world, big governmenttax hikes on alcohol and Tedas raising the price of electric by 18%. Is the trader expected to bare these costs?
In the current economic climate it is tough to make a living out of tourism at the moment.
-
Ovacikpeedoff. We agree it is just not possible to make a business work on a seasonal basis in Fethiye area, in UK or around the world on Tesco/Kipa Migros style pricing. We say that having many years of having to cope with the issues in the English Lakes for many years. There is usually price adjustments to reflect. It is up to us as individuals to compare and assess the values.
-
What is the price of Calis boat this year ?
-
The first post in this thread stated boat trips last year 20 tl or 25 tl - this year 50 tl. That on the higher price is an increase of 100%. Whilst we all agree that it is necessary to make a profit and that fuel etc has gone up, a price hike of 100% is taking the proverbial:(
-
I know how well everyone speaks of Jerrys boat but I've never been on his boat , so must try this year....where does he normally moor his boat in the harbour....?...and does anyone have contact details ?.....I will check on his profile anyway.....thanks
-
June - Jerry walks the prom every evening and you only need to grab him and he will be able to tell you when you want to go. He will have his diary with him.
I don't know how up to speed he is with computer bookings in advance.
Contact details are on www.jerryboat.com.
-
Should also have also said that Jerry will normally pick you up, or at least he used to.
-
A 50% increase is rather harsh. Been on them all and don't intend to go n them again.
-
Ray1951 would you care to say why.
-
You may consider this relevant or not but on the days that we have gone out on boat trips and having eating on the boat we seldom have a "full" meal in the evening.

To clarify 25Tl to 50Tl is a real 100% increase not a mere 50%.
Carol and Tayfun large quiet boat. On-line 2011 £10, 2012 £10 including transfer and meal.
-
There lies part of the problem. C&T is charging the same £10 in 2012 as 2011. But that is not really a true reflection. C&T charged 23TL in 2011 and 29TL in 2012. Turkey is different to a number of European holiday countries in that the Turks think the TL is a soft currency and want to price everything in Sterling, Euro or Dollar. So they want a 20% increase to cover costs they apply it in sterling.
On top of that you have to take the Turkish mentality into account in that the main way they see of increasing revenue when the customer base is declining is to charge even more. The problem is there are too many boats, too many restaurants and too many bars chasing smaller tourist numbers. Those that do come have less to spend so they have to economise. When we went to fethiye on holiday we went on the islands tour at least twice in the two weeks. If I was going there now because of cut backs we would just take one trip.

Here is the link to Jerry's Boat Facebook page which is a good way to contact him. He replied to my message straight away a couple of days ago.
Highly recommended and the food is first class and there is plenty of it.

I'm confused as Hamish from Baris boat that we went on told us it was all a cooperative now, and that all big boats are 50tl.
are Carol & Tayfun not classed as a big boat along with e others?
No sign of them in any case, only 3 ticket sellers all charging the same.
The Calis boats are charging 350 per boat and take up to 12 people.
I fully understand the need to cover costs etc etc, but price hike is huge and quality poor in relation to Calis boats, which was my point, nothing to do with being an ex pat that feels I'm owed anything!
-
They tried the co-operative idea a few years ago; you booked on a smaller boat & then you turned up you were put on one of the huge boats. It fell by the wayside, as there were so many complaints
-
We fell victim to the small boat booking big boat sailing scam, while we sat on the small boat for the best part of an hour they then tried shifting us to the large boat which had been filling up for the last hour and had only tiny cramped spaces left, I got my money back and booked for the next day with Carole and Tayfun...and they did the same thing. I hate the hassle and have only been when a group of friends gets together and books a whole boat.
-
I think it depends on how desperate they are! Baris said they would take us for £10 (although advertising more),actually charging us 30TL. We asked about Efes prices and were told they were 6TL on board. When I pulled a face he said, just say I said you could pay 5TL. They also picked us up and returned us to Calis. Food was not exceptional, but fine. i don't think you can really complain about a day out and plenty of food for that price!
-
we went on a boat trip today 33ytl and loads of food that was tasty
-
We went on jerrys boat yesterday and he charged us 40 Lira each, personally I found the food average, there were 13 of us and he asked if we would take on 4 strangers, as it would make no difference to our charge we all said no, had he offered us a 5 lira discount he would have had another 160 Lira plus all their drink money.
A great day out with great friends 8)
-
I have to agree with tinx, I have done 3 boat trips this year, 1 from Calis, 1 on a boat near Jerry's boat and Jerry boat yesterday, all very much the same food wise, on Jerry's we were just taken to where they wanted to go, on the other 2 we were asked if we had any preferences to where we wanted to go. I have to say in fairness, Jerry was not on our boat, but it did basically follow him on the other boat. The main difference was the food, we have come to expect Jerry to be that much better and pay a little bit more for it, yesterday Jerry was 40tl other trips we have been on were 35tl.
But it was a great day out with friends.
-
Noticed one of the smaller boats in Fethiye advertising 150 pounds for the boat for the day and the maximum he took was 10 people. It was a lovely boat,no loud music, plenty of sunbeds or places in the shade to sit and very clean toilets......yes we had a look around.By my calculations at todays rate this comes to around 40tl per person.Worth thinking about if your party comes to around 10 people.
-
I agree, wonderful day out with friends but the food was disappointing.
We even had to ask for more than 1 piece of garlic bread each.
And the person who booked it specifically asked to be taken to quiet bays but we hooked up alongside everyone else.
Can't beat Yasar's Calis boat Tanem in my opinion, have tried them all over the years and his food leaves the rest in the shade.
-
Oh no...very disappointed to hear Jerry's food wasn't up to scratch :( What a shame. We have always rated him and recommended him to many people over the years.
-
Maybe a sign of the times, when they expand and the quality goes down, we used Jerry's a few times in the past and had great trips.
-
I found out about Jerry's Boat via this forum and last year we went out with him twice and we really felt that the lunches were outstanding.
I too was on the boat trip yesterday and also thought the lunch didn't compare to what I last year considered to be exceptionally good food.
I have been in touch with Jerry about this as having a business in the food industry appreciate that all feedback (good and bad) is very important and as I am sure that many of us who have used him regularly in the past would want to do so again.
I expect to hear back later tonight or tomorrow and will report back here when I do.
-
I dont remember seeing any salad? also they used to come round with some fruit afterwards and again this was missing.
-
and it was only a sprat! Im sure the fish were much bigger ;)
-
Had two boat trips in June organised by friends.
The first on Toraman 1 leaving from Fethiye and picking us up at the Sat and the second from the taxi boat station in Calis on Alis 1.
The boats were in very good condition, very clean, the food plentiful and delicious.
The cost on each boat was £14 a head.
A great time was had by all.
-
Interesting, I wanted a recommendation of a boat as the one we always used has now been sold. We tried Fulya 10 this year, its a lovely boat, but the food was pretty average.
We have also had a couple of trips on the Calis boats this year, Burak I think (no 23) and the food was excellent, but you need to have a group as they don't sell individual places.
I will have a look at the recommendations. I don't mind paying 50 lira, I had no idea how they made a profit before and with the price of fuel etc, but would like to have a decent meal.
