Just been listening to the music on the tannoy from Fethiye. Today is a special Bayram. It is the day that Ataturk chose as his birthday as he didnt actually know when his birthday was and according to wikpedia the day that Turkey became independent? WW1.

its the day he sent the troops in, Turkish War of Independence in 1919.
Independence didnt come until 24th July 1923
It is the date he chose as his birthday. He also designated it as young people and sports day.

It is the day that he first arrived to Samsun, after leaving Istanbul to start organisation of independence war.

As far as I know, he didnt chose for his birthday. Public decided it,  as his birth year is known but day is not.

I noticed the football stadium in Ankara is called 19 Mayis stadium and I wondered why!
