One of the great things about this forum is the ability to pick up great advice and information that proves to be an absolute gem. Some years ago, after we had a terrible experience in the fish market, CBF member KKOB recommended we visit the Oztoklu which is in fact just through the walkway in the fish market inside the fruit and vegetable market. We followed his advice and what great advice it proved to be. Oztoklu is a small family run restaurant with Rahim and Melahat in the kitchen with Yalcin and Rukiye out front. Rukiye or Yalcin will take you into the fish market and help you pick your fish, they also make sure you are charged the correct price, but to be honest, we now let them get the fish as we know that they always get the best quality. We started with a mixture of calamari and Prawns, these are seved in a sauce that Rahim creates, this sauce is a secret recipe and is just delicious. Chris likes fish but has trouble with the bones, so we ordered a fillet of sea bass which was cooked to perfection and almost bone free.
Oztoklu is a remarkable little place, with the hundreds of restaurants in Fethiye, they are listed in the top 20 on tripadvisor which I think is a big achievement and something they are very proud of. So I have to say a big thank you to CBF and KKOB for pointing out this absolute gem.

We've been twice in the last 2 weeks, their calamari is my favourite food in the whole of Fethiye.
Dad isn't keen on garlic So they made him his own special sauce yesterday to go with his prawns and he loved it. Lovely family, and consistently fantastic food and friendly service
Rukiye is back any day now with the twins

we intended to try it in April, but ran out of time (always the case on our holidays - always come to an end too quickly). We plan to visit on or next trip, but are always very wary as Mr Pookie is allergic to shell-fish so we have to ensure that the fish is always cooked on seperate griddles etc. Do we know if this is the case here ? otherwise I may need to review the life insurance policy cos I am definitely having the prawns !!! ;): :)
-
We love the place too but don't always look forward to the ahem, climb, to the loos! As you say a lovely family, video clips and everything of the family last visit. Got to be garlic prawns every time, we keep saying we'll do something else but we never do.
-
Thanks for that Rimms and the next time you're there give Rukiye a kiss from me and Jen.
-
Will do with pleasure Alan and Chris will give Yalcin a kiss from Jen.
-
Please tell Rukiye we are trying our very very best to get back for a visit while she's still in Fethiye.
-
Will do Jennie, I never fail to be amazed how popular the Oztuklu family are among their customers, I think it's probably because of their sincerity rather than the love of your money often demonstrated elsewhere over here. We are really looking forward to seeing the twins who have grown so much from the little baby,s they were when we last saw them. Yalcin showed us some pictures of them last week.
By the way, for anyone who would like to try Oztoklu, there are two sets of meals for two people in the promises auction. You can send in an Internet bid and if successful you will have a lovely meal " in the bank" for when you next visit.

we visited the restaurant last week having not been over there for a meal for a couple of years :(
my god the meal and service was fabulous, we opted for some prawns for starters and a sea bream for main meal, it was all cooked to perfection, and all the family are an inspiration :)
we shall be back in spetember for more:D

I too, due to recommendations on this forum went to the Oztuklu Restaurant and since my first visit, wouldn't eat anywhere else in the Fish Market. What a lovely family they are - they make you so welcome. Superb food and no rip-off fish prices here. Looking forward to my next visit 8) 8)

is this restaurant open at night and when is the best time to go ?i.e. when is the fresh fish brought to the market. also is the fish market open at night ? thanks
-
Yes, the Oztoklu is open 'til around 1-2am or later if they still have customers.
The fresh fish is being brought into the market throughout the day.
Yes, the fishmarket's open at night. The last stalls close around 11pm or later if business is good.
-
thanks for that

I have been and the food was nice but I think the location lacks atmosphere .Iprefer being in the Fish Market.
-
It will always come down to personal preference Steve, I think the exact opposite to you, I love the vibrant colours in the fruit and veg market combined with the abundant spice shops that are next to Oztoklu, sitting there you could only be in Turkey.
Anyway, less of the location, glad you enjoyed the food.
-
We love this place too- what a lovely family! Even though we're veggie we enjoy some gozleme and soak up the atmosphere. Then we pop into 'Sister's Place' for our goodies. Two of our favourite places in Fethiye!
-
Called by today and Rukiye & Yalcin said to say hello, they had the first of our Auction winners in last night.
-
Had another fantastic meal in here last night. Yalcin was on his own and working like a trouper. I have not tried the other restaurants in the fish market but the food in Oztoklu is spot on. There was a table of 6 Americans behind us and they could not praise it enough either. Excellent value for money.
-
I don't think Rukiye's back there full-time until mid-May. I know her and her husband and babies were in Fethiye over the weekend because it was the twins' birthday. But they've now returned to Izmir for a few weeks.
-
Correct KKOB, Yalcin said he was on his own till the end of May.

Hi folks, very interesting posts. Every time my wife and visit the fish market we choose the best & freshest produce on offer and then take it to a restaurant named Ceter, who cook it for @ 5 Lira. plus chips , salad & garlic bread it works out as a very cheap meal plus the extras knowing that you yourself have bought the best star of the show, namely the fish. Are all these recommendations for bringing your own bought produce from the market and cooked by the restaurant, or the whole meal provided by the same ?
P.S. We love the whole thing. Captain Birds Eye , turn in your grave!!!
-
Do you know what the best and freshest is? I always go over with Recep and we have whatever he suggests. It would be great to learn more and make an educated choice :)
-
Yes Keith, I always ask Yelcin which fish is best, last year he introduced me to what he called white tuna, it was absolutely delicious and as cheap as chips.
-
In the early days we bought some prawns and fish and took them over to Recep. He took one look at the prawns, asked who we got them off, took them over and threw them at the guy followed by an earbashing.Recep then sent his son to another stall, smiled at us and said "it will just take a bit longer, what do you want to drink ?".Lovely guy.
-
And it was there that I met you Kevin I think :)
-
Indeed it was Keith,We had taken our non english speaking gardener for a day out to Cadianda (a fun day,he was navigator) then treated him to a fish supper at Receps.I can't remember if Crabbit was with you.Recep is best friends with my Turkish son-in-law so every time we meet it's a bear hug,two smackers and "hello father", !! :) :)
-
Yes we love going to see Recep, he's such a character and has a wicked sense of humour, quite exceptional sometimes.
-
We were eating there one lunchtime and my late mom in law passed out with the heat.Recep took over, shouting his guys to fetch cold water and towels. His son asked where we had parked, took my keys and fetched the car from the otopark and parked outside the entrance. It was about concern not commerce. Treasures.
-
Hi Keith, My old man, a master mariner brought us kids up on fish , as a Manxman he educated us on what to look out for in buying fresh fish, ie, clear eyes, bright red gills which have to be opened to inspect and of course fresh fish does not smell fishy, if it smells of fish it is stale. I will be in the fish market in 4 weeks and am looking forward to trying Receps for a change. Is it OK to take my own bought fish ? If so what is the charge for cooking it?
Many thanks , Ivor & Gill. :)
-
Tried Cem Can for the first time for a change and it was very good
