Title: More demolition works
Post by: Jim Fraser on May 30, 2012, 17:08:13 PM
The council are at it again - this afternoon on the prom, most of the Yakamoz was demolished, and farther along the Bogaziçi and the Kardelen both had sections removed.
so much for trying to improve tourism - I wander what the visitors at the Yakamoz thought when a Zabita uniform moved them so they could get the place knocked down.

What a way to run a tourism area during it's main season. I'd almost say I can't believe they are doing this. Almost.

Shocked to see these pics but surely the owners of these establishments had been given warnings that this would happen one of these days.Or may be not!

We were cycling through just as the huge crane swung over the heads of the people sitting having a drink! The 4 Zabita that were standing there were very interested in watching the crane, but not concerned about the people walking past it and of course nothing was cordoned off.

I really should be used to it, but it still surprises me. Health and Safety doesn't exist here and why now just as the season is getting busy?

We went along here twice yesterday and couldn't believe what we were seeing. There were a bunch of uniformed guys standing around making no effort to keep people away. One even had a camera... how sweet! If there was a problem with these places then it must have been known a while ago so why not knock them down out of season? Now part of the promenade is a demolition site and they deserve to lose tourists if this is how they carry on.

The phrase "couldn't organise a p**s up in a brewery" comes to mind.

Its called "self sabotage in the sun" and brown envelopes must have been in abundance when these places were first built. Such a sad site for Fethiye and cant imagine what new tourists think.  Would it put you off coming again?? It wouldnt me because the bay and views far outweigh any demolition.  The H & S would be more of a concern for some.

Beggars belief - What are they trying to do, commit tourism suicide[?]

Every year at the beginning of the season we see articles from the tourist board spelling out their hopes for tourism in the coming season.  Well it is not the economic crisis in Europe that will crush their hopes, that can be done in one fell swoop by the Belediye.

Last summer all the streets close to the culture centre were up spelling disaster for the cafes and restaurants in that area.  Of course it is a great improvement and has dealt with the problem of floooding but could it not have been done in the winter[?]

This season it is the construction of a town square and new car park which once completed will greatly improve the area.  But what of the businesses along the strip - they will probably have no customers left!

And now surprise, surprise slap bang at the start of the main tourist season they come along and ruin the livelihoods of the Yakamos, Bogazici and Kardelen not to mention the very attractive promenade.

The Fethiye area has many loyal tourists who return year on year but what will first timers think[?]

Yakamoz looks to have come off worst.

These places had extended beyond their original boundaries without permission so I think it's only fair to other restaurant that something has been done. But...as others have mentioned as well...this could have been done before the season started.

We asked questions of another business in the area and were told that they had all extended over their boundaries and had all been given warnings that this would happen so they had plenty of time to sort it out before the bulldozers went in.
Timing could have been better but apart from the Yakamoz it looked as if tidying up was under way and certainly Bogazici and Kardelen were both trading today.

I suppose you can't have it both ways - we moan about people ignoring the laws over there then we moan when the law is enforced. It does seem very heavy handed and poorly timed but as Fi says, we don't know exactly what warnings/notice they had previously. I guess if maximum impact and inconvenience was the mission, the authorities achieved their aim. It's simply not doing the place any favours in the eyes of the casual holidaymaker.

Exactly ... the Yakamoz has come off worst because it had transgressed most.

Have to say, we thought the work on the town square would kill us but quite the opposite! Seen far more tourists than usual!! Wish they would get on with it though!!

My guess is that the council have timed these demolitions quite deliberately ie hit the non-compliance offenders in the pocket after many warnings. Shame really as nobody seems to win on this one !
