Folks, is it quiet in Calis this year? Just wondered as usually by now the olf Forum is alive with new members asking about everything from where to buy a corn plaster to where is a good place to go bungee jumping and it seems quiet?
Maybe it is the new Forum that everyone can find what they want and dont need to ask?
Or is it booming and bristling with new visitors and standing room only on the Prom?
We dont come until September usually, and it is always quieter then, just hope not grave-like by then!

we were over in June for 4 weeks and we found it fairly quiet - certainly as far as Brits were concerned, our hotel was all German, Poles and Slovacs who do not really spend money in the bars and restaurants as they were all half board. We never had to wait for a seat in any of the restaurants we go to, including Bella Mama. Hopefully it will be a bit more busy in September, but maybe not.

We were over in June and found it a bit quiet, especially the lack of Brits. Our hotel was full of Germans, Poles and Slovacs and of course they are all half board and don't spend much money in the bars and restaurants. We never had any trouble in getting a seat in the restaurants we use, including the Meeting Point, Casa Mama and Bella Mama.
Hopefully it might perk up a bit during Summer and September but maybe not.
We were also surprised that no one seemed to be commenting on restaurants etc. but to be honest nor have we - might remedy that now.

Very quiet this year John, even more so than last year, been coming to fethiye and calis for about 15 years now and it is definately not what it was, a couple of girls on our complex were down calis last night and they told me today some of the bars, restaurants were empty and closing about 11pm, i know that the price of air fares has a lot to do with this too. sad times im afraid.
-
I rode the length of the prom last night and I'd say most restaurants where more than 60% full. I was going to the Meeting Point and couldn't get a table. I saw Ahmed today and he said it's going well.
-
Were you on horseback Ken. and was the meeting point to point. and did you win?. :)
-
Not so many Brits on our complex as last year at this time, but lots of Turkish folk on holiday in Calis. Trouble is they mostly stay with relatives, eat at home and then just go walk about on the prom. Although the restaurants we use seem to be doing fine.
-
Not suprising the price of the flights are extortionate. Most people I have talked to are just refusing to pay the prices.
-
I like it reasonably quiet wherever I go being a miserable old git now, (well, studying
hard at the Meldrew Academy), but not too quiet! Yes the Air Fares have gone up a hell of a lot and
I am sure that is an issue, and times are a bit hard everywhere.
Like a lot of places in Spain/Portugal years ago perhaps too many bars and restaurants all vying for limited trade,
only so much money in Tourism.
Well, just have to wait and see.

Well I thought I was going to have to go elsewhere abroad again in September due to the price of flights to Dalaman. However, after deleting cookies every time I went on flight sites, I've eventually managed to get a good priced 10 day flight after weeks of trying. So Johntaylor49, it wont be quiet in September coz I'll be there!!!! LOL. Don't know if deleting cookies makes any difference, but the prices certainly changed each time I logged on, this time in my favour.
:)
-
We shall be arriving on the 20th of july, hoorah! is the coffee moring still going on, it would be good to meet a few members!
-
Toky why did deleting cookies help you find a better flight price?
Sorry if I am being dim!

omg! I have heard the rumours!
-
Fear not John!
Jo B, I read somewhere that if you frequently use sites as I've been doing recently (Easyjet, Jet2, ThomasCook), they recognise my searches because of cookies left previously, so know that my IP adrress is actively seeking a costing. Now I may be shot down in flames if this is not the case, but somehow it does make sense. It could just be coincidence but the outward price I got today was far cheaper than anything listed over the last few weeks. I deleted my cookies before logging on the their site. As I say, it could be owt or nowt, so don't take it as gospel.
:)
-
True or not Toky, I've heard the same and always clear cookies if I've been doing a lot of searching on particular sites.
-
Just been doing a bit of searching, cleared cookies first, definitely better prices. Will always do this in future before searching. Thanks Toky.

I was out mid april untill late june and it has been as quite as ive ever seen it,hence im sick of the weather here so ive just found a morning flight back for £53 99p including taxes lgw to dlm 7 40 in the morning one way this time ill worry about getting back later. If you are flexable there are cheap flights about and do delete your searching when looking for flights and hey they do some times come up later much cheaper.
-
For anybody who has been looking for the end of the season, Fly Thomas Cook now have flights showing in November.
-
You are right Toky. If you go out and back into the same search the price has often gone up. I spent some time watching holiday prices before we went to Mexico and found that the price went down on monday night or tuesday morning and went up at the weekend. We got all inclusive fortnight flying from Glasgow for under £1200 for both of us. It was quoted at up to 1600 at times.
Delete Cookies and buy midweek :D 8)
-
Sorry for kind of highjacking the thread, but as soons as I booked our outgoing flights this morning, I then logged back in without clearing cookies and the same flight was £30.70p dearer!
-
Fly Thomas Cook flights are outrageous this year, we let family and friends have our place for nothing just the cost of clean and bills, yet this year if they are holidaying for 1 week or 2 they have found better deals by going else where in the world, our niece is going 1 week all inclusive to Sicily £500 for 2.
-
Hi Toky who did you book your flight with, we are booked for September but my daughter & son are looking for reasonably priced flights?
-
you are defo right Toky, I always delete my cookies after learning about it on here, the other week I was looking at Monarch flights and forgot to do the cookie thing after, about an hour later I had an email from Monarch thanking me for my recent search for a flight to Dalaman and as I had not booked anything they sent me a link to some alternative destinations defo worth doing it after all flight searches :)
-
If you look on travel supermarket.com or skyscanner the prices are always cheaper than on the main flythomascook or Monarch sites. Same flights 2 greatly varying prices.
-
Monarch for Gatwick and Luton (not checked other regions) have so far been cheaper than FTC sometimes by more than £50. we have managed to get Monarch flights for £54 each including 10KG of hand luggage each (no need for hold luggage), this will be our 3rd flight with Monarch this year and could well be our 4th.
Clearing cookies also works for Quidco, the affiliate sites majority of the time will not offer the best option, Quidco etc could offer a bargain at £60 yet going direct to the dealer may show the better deal at £50.
-
Two reasons why it is quieter this year. More hotels are going all inclusive and restaurant and bar prices are increasing at an alarming rate.
-
we arrived yesterday and it was very busy
in the meeting point we waited nearly hour for our meal because the restaurant was packed
-
the hotel my bf works at is full and thats Grand Vizon so not even on the seafront or a particularly well known one, i dont think so anyway. It's busy as far as ive seen everywhere!
-
My family and I are struggling to find flights to Dalaman full stop, FTC is showing very few outbound flights from Leeds-Bradford, Humberside, Manchester, Liverpool yet there are plenty of flights coming back into those airports! Could TC be 'hiding' flights? Surely if the outbound flights are booked up the inbound ones should be? Unless lots of northerners are emigrating this summer!
-
I booked flights yesterday from Gatwick for September cost was reasonable .
Going on the seating availability the flight seemed empty so I am expecting a flight change same as in May
This was with Monarch .

I just looked as an example, 4 people flying out for 14 days from Friday 2oth July and found
3 options from Manchester? If, as I suspect from your post you are in or around West yorkshire there is a Compnay I have bo0oked with to come to calis who were excellent -- www.sunmaster.co.uk -- based in Sunny Bradford 8)

If you think that Calis is quiet this year, just come to Greece. They are really suffering and at times Chrissie and I think that we are the only tourists in the area.
We were in Delphi the other day, one of the most important tourist spots in Greece but there were very few people there. Such a shame for the lovely people that we have met in Greece this year.
Believe me, Calis is well crowded compared with olther parts of Europe but the restaurants and bars will still complain that the "cash crop" of brits have not come. Perhaps they need to put a lot more effort into attracting people into their bars.
We will have to see what Italy is doing to attract tourists from tomorrow. Updates later. 8)

Thank you for your lovely replies and suggestions, there is still hope! Yep we're in sunny old Bradford so we're looking at travelling from one of the airports "local" to us (Leeds Bradford, Humberside, Manchester, Liverpool) without having to eat dry bread for the rest of the year. We have a very specific dates due to my old man's holidays which are 23rd July-7th August so pretty much the two busiest weeks of the year!
I will have a look through all those suggestions, thanks once again!
-
Squiffy, and apologies to all this not strictly relevant to my original post, but I almost went to Volos
this year but despite the issues it seemed as if prices, particularly Hotels, in Greece were going up not down! (Not the way to fill the place). Sicily was looking good and unfortunately we will be there not Calis next year as I want to see Salerno. Calis still great value!

Interesting article about tourism numbers.

Mark - hi - the worrying trend here is that 2012 is down 11% (doing it in my head so give or take a percent!) but that is on an 11% drop the previous year from 2010 to 2011.
Therefore they lost 70,000 brits in 2011 followed by a further loss of 60,000 in 2012 and the comment that "the schools haven't closed etc" is too ridiculous to take seriously!

British Visitors Down
British visitors for the first six months of 2012 are 60,000 down on last year.
The actual figures for British tourists in the first six months of the year are: 2010 – 594k; 2011 – 522k; 2012 – 462.5k.
But as we all know schools in Britain haven't closed for summer holidays yet so the situation could still improve.

I for 1 has just got a job again so may be able to afford to come out again but with prices rising that fast may give it a miss

Portugal 2012:
Pint lager (nice enough) from 1 euro
Wine red/white/rose (actually v pleasant) from 1 euro
3 courses menu (again some rather good) from 6.90 euro
Turkey's reputation as a great destination for cheap dining & drinks has SERIOUS competition. There was a pizza/pasta restaurant near our hotel which we used following a late arrival into resort - cheep and cheerful but food excellent and some nights people queued down the street for a table.
-
Oh, and 4 return flights £286 from memory - roughly the price of one return to Dalaman from our local airports.
-
Does Turkey control the cost of flights or is it the tour opperators? Flights could be more expensive for Turkey as it is double the distance between UK and here compared to other EU resorts. As for eating there are many places here where food costs far less than you stated.Drink is a problem but no amount of moaning about it will change the goverment tax issues.. :-[

Keith remind me, are you in Sicily? I was thinking of going there next year instead of Calis

DER! Sorry saw Portugal bit later! Been there twice didnt like it but that just me lol
-
We quite liked it, it hasn't got the pull of Calis/Turkey for us anyway but we enjoyed our holiday. I've mentioned before that we've only been to Turkey on holiday in the years 2002-2010 (including 5 years living there!) so we want the kids to experience other parts of the "abroad".
We found Portugal to be very friendly indeed, on par with Turkey. My post really was only to point out that Turkey is losing it's cheap destination (or let's say great value) rapidly. There's a whole lot more to Turkey than cheap fags and Efes, nobody needs to tell me that, but a lot of people need great value for money in these difficult times and Turkey appears to be missing out a little more every year.

I booked flights on monday for us two to come out in four weeks,( and we can't wait now) , Gatwick to Dalaman, meal onboard ,extra legroom for me as i'm long and extra legroom for her and she will dangling her legs anyway lol Why can't you get different seats next to each other? errrr , 20 kgs each bags and travel insurance , came to £ 1245.
Ouch thank goddness we're staying at a villa bargain rate £350 for two weeks.
I can see why people would be put off coming but for us the draw is to strong.
My holiday break at work was booked ages ago but we were hoping to be living there by now but things on the house selling fronthave not gone as planned, so i dare say if i had booked the same flights back in November when i usually do i would have saved money on the flights.
Oh nearly forgot the flights were booked through Monarch, Thomas Cook had nothing much at all.
