Title: Perhaps I deserve this..who knows?
Post by: Jacqui Harvey on July 19, 2012, 11:24:30 AM: I have noted that every time I come to the Forum with help or information someone immediately comes and gives me the thumbs down and drops my rating. Now, I don't care about this, I maybe deserve a thumbs down when I try to help.
I came to the site this morning to share news about a new website which I thought would save members money. I am now getting another thumbs down. So perhaps I am best not to post on this thread anymore?
I always liked CBF I felt welcome and at home here, but I find this behaviour quite sneaky and sinister.

It was introduced to allow people to show appreciation for the input of others but seems to be more popular for attempting to upset members. Personally I wouldn't let it get to me and am pleased to see my own positive "thumbs up" of a nett 32 - but it is rather irritating that I run this place for people to freely use out of my own time and the other side of the equation is my 14 thumbs down - cheers to you 14 guys for your appreciation of what I created for us all!

We'll continue to look for an alternative, something like a member "thanks" response option but for now, those people who have a problem with any member will just have to tell them, not hide behind a silly little forum thumb.

Post by: Scunner on July 19, 2012, 11:55:23 AM: The problem is that the thumbs up/down doesn't show what is being approved/disliked (it doesn't show which post caused the thumbs up/down or even whether it was a specific post at all) - just that someone did or didn't like something about someone. That is probably why it felt a little sinister to some.

A "thanks for posting" option would be far better - but there currently isn't one for this forum type. In the meantime, if people have a problem with someone, be adult about it and tell them.

Post by: nichola on July 19, 2012, 12:19:46 PM: I used the thumbs down and thumbs up quite a lot while it existed. I used thumbs up for posts that made me laugh or were particularly helpful and in particular for new members who I thought were trying to add something to the discussion threads.

As someone who received a thumbs up rating at one point of 20 that dropped to 17 it did at first bother me and then I thought who cares. I always try to be polite and helpful and if that's not good enough then tough.

My main reason for using thumbs down was because I think sometimes people can be quite snippy in their replies to new members in particular. I personally think there is no need for this. There is always a nice way to point someone in the right direction or advise them better how to use the search facility or the forum in general. We were all new members once and not everyone is familiar with a discussion forum.

I also meet a lot of people and many read the forum but say they would never post and the main reason for that is that they are scared about how they or their contributions will be received based on how they have seen some topics develop. I always try to encourage people to post and that what they have to say is worth sharing.

Overall I believe the forum does an excellent job and that spats between members and unpleasant personal comments are fairly rare and new members are warmly welcomed into topics these days 8)

It just seems that some people have nothing better to do than try and bring others down to their level Jacqui. Sad but true I'm afraid.

Glad it's removed though as I was getting a little worried (yeah right!) I only had about 3 thumbs up ;-)

There's been loads of times I have just wanted to press a "thanks" button to express how helpful comments have been to us. You may find it hard to believe, but sometimes a "heads up" on a certain topic can make a world of difference to our holiday. So everyone, please continue to comment and express opinions - that's what makes this forum so great and makes our holidays all the better for the knowledge.
