Has anyone every tried the mussels sold by the guy with the big basket, he is usually by the bridge but comes along the prom sometimes
Last month we were in Georges and it was getting late. Serkul next door was closing and one of the waiters came in with a huge plastic bag of mussels, he put it on the table and all the staff dived in squeezing lemon the mussels and eating them.
I would really fancy trying them sometime, but would like an opinion please ;D :-\

Ive tried them several times Jacqui. they are delicious. :)
-
Not for me I'm afraid but Brenda says that they are lovely ;D
-
Shirley and I have tried them a few times and recommend them, they are delicious.

Loz & I both LOVE them, and I'm VERY fussy about sea-food !! They are sold with boiled rice inside, ( don't quite know how they manage that) lol, but are scrummy !! :P
-
Agree with all - they are by far the best mussels I have had anywhere, ever.

Yes, it's a very ancient art. The Mussel Wranglers have to teach the mussels not to eat the rice while they're being boiled.

Go for it Jacqui, they are delicious.

Midye dolma, mussels with spicy rice. We had some in Fethiye ordered by a friend of ours, I was rather reluctant to try but nO I'll effects, but very very spicy

O.K. will give them a try now I have so many glowing recommendations. Always wanted to have a go but sometimes shellfish can be a bit iffy... So will trust the general opinion on the Forum.... Ta.

While we were living there we had them at least once a week & never had a single problem with them being iffy ;D- I miss them soooo much, I wish they made them in UK :'(

Seriously Jacqui they are avery famous Turkish delicacy and have been for centuries, delicious, they sell them on the streets in Istanbul, partuclarly around the Galata bridge area. I guess in the Calis area not too much pollution as Mussels like Oysters are wonderful at absorbing pollutants like heavy metals so you have to be careful around areas with polluted water, which is why I didnt eat them in Istanbul with half the Black Sea states pollution pouring out through the Bosphorous! :)
-
Stupid question time. Are they cooked or are they raw like oysters?
-
The hot weather and sea food in a basket has Always put me off been worried of getting food poisoning I suppose
-
They are beautiful they have rice and chilly powder in well worth having never had any problems with them :)
-
Heather, they are cooked. I wouldn't buy from anyone other than the guy at the bridge in Calis. :P
-
just to clarify.....
i love mussels back in the UK but there's more than one person selling them in the late evening/night at Calis. Who should I trust to have a late-night treat(mussels only please) before shuffling back to our hotel?
TIA

I'm 100% with Gordy - the man who stands at the end of the bridge (non-sea end) around where the water taxis are. Never tried anyone else, doubt I ever will :)
