Title: Mussels in Calis
Post by: Jacqui Harvey on July 23, 2012, 19:09:27 PM
Has anyone every tried the mussels sold by the guy with the big basket, he is usually by the bridge but comes along the prom sometimes
Last month we were in Georges and it was getting late.  Serkul next door was closing and one of the waiters came in with a huge plastic bag of mussels, he put it on the table and all the staff dived in squeezing lemon the mussels and eating them.
I would really fancy trying them sometime, but would like an opinion please ;D :-\

Loz & I both LOVE them, and I'm VERY fussy about sea-food !! They are sold with boiled rice inside, ( don't quite know how they manage that) lol, but are scrummy !!  :P

Agree with all - they are by far the best mussels I have had anywhere, ever.

Yes, it's a very ancient art. The Mussel Wranglers have to teach the mussels not to eat the rice while they're being boiled.

Seriously Jacqui they are  avery famous Turkish delicacy and have been for centuries, delicious, they sell them on the streets in Istanbul, partuclarly around the Galata bridge area. I guess in the Calis area not too much pollution as Mussels like Oysters are wonderful at absorbing pollutants like heavy metals so you have to be careful around areas with polluted water, which is why I didnt eat them in Istanbul with half the Black Sea states pollution pouring out through the Bosphorous!   :)

just to clarify.....
i love mussels back in the UK but there's more than one person selling them in the late evening/night at Calis. Who should I trust to have a late-night treat(mussels only please) before shuffling back to our hotel?
TIA

I'm 100% with Gordy - the man who stands at the end of the bridge (non-sea end) around where the water taxis are. Never tried anyone else, doubt I ever will  :)
