Title: Discussion about Steak
Post by: Scunner on August 25, 2012, 19:26:38 PM
We tried an Indian meal at Bambu and found it surprising good.

I must ask Jacqui, why eating a steak in Calis is unforgivable but an Indian buffet isn't :D

Probably because we can get the best steaks in the world in Scotland, so nothing compares when we go abroad. Great Steak is the norm for us. In fact, we just had two lovely Scottish Fillet Steaks.  However, it seems to be the gauge of a great restaurant in Turkey by lots of reviewers,so many times I read about a new restaurant and then see the inevitable words "the best steak I ever had"   I often wonder why eating out means eating steak?
We where at the Auction Night and were in the Bambu after a few drinkies we decided to have a meal and the waiter, who we know well asked us if we would like to try their new menu for  Indian food and we agreed.  However, I would stay 90% of the meals we eat in  the Calis area are Turkish.  It's the first Indian meal we have ever had in Turkey... However, Hell may freeze over before I have a steak.

have not tried the Bambu curry night but think we will in the future. I am now realising about Jacqui and her steaks (in a nice way Jacqui  :)) sometimes I  want a steak in Turkey just for the hell of it and to this day I have not found a good one at all, the only thing that came close was having the cheateau briand at the Meeting Point the meat was the best I have ever tasted in Turkey and all served up by the lovely Ahmed and his team  :)

I think people should have what they want on holiday. We love to try the local dishes but you would possibly get very bored of it 7 or 14 nights on the trot. We'll normally have a full English breakfast at least once, and the same with Indian - we'll find a good one if only just to have a good change for a night. Except in Turkey, where the Indian restaurants are generally rubbish. I would say the best Indian I have ever had in Turkey isn't as good as the worst Indian I have had in the UK.

I totally agree Scunner, people should have what they want on holiday.  Probably if I lived in Turkey I would want an occasional steak.  However, I can honestly say that steak is the last thing I would order on holiday as it seems so mundane and ordinary, but each to his own... As someone once said.. Let them eat Steak (or was it Cake). :P  ;) ;D

Quite a strange feeling for me but I actually agree with Jacqui on something....Scottish steak!  I never understand it when I'm told "I had the best steak ever in Bella Mamas/Orient etc etc."
The meat here is very different to Scottish meat.
When we do fancy a steak we will cook it ourselves to our own taste as the few times we've had it restaurants the steak has always been quite chewy...OK very chewy : :)
Phil and I have not yet had a good curry in a restaurant here however most Friday nights we have darn good ones, once again, at home ;)

Strangely enough, I have had some great steaks in Turkey - but not for years. One of the best was at the Teras restaurant above the Bus Stop, the first season that was open, and there was a place in Ortaca we used to go to when visiting Crabbit in Koycegiz that was exceptional - not just steaks but everything.

Steaks recently are very poor - and I assume it is down to rising meat prices, and cheaper cuts being used (although I know very little about cuts of meat!!) - Mrs Scunner describes recent ones as like "beefsteak", a description that I do understand.

Teras, now theres going back a wee while, they used to do a good proper fillet steak, it is not often i have a steak eating out, home or abroad but i did try La Teras on the reccomendation of my wife and it was very good, i prefer turkish food but as Scunner says 14 days you get a bit fed up so i try a bit of spicy, piri piri chicken or something along that lines.
   ;)

Whenever we wanted a steak I cooked it at home. The nicest steak I had was from Kipa's meat counter and it melted in the mouth. It was called Dana Bonfil and some restaurants use it in their Chateau Briand.

Have to say I really miss La Terace.  It was probably my favourite place to eat.  So chilled out and lovely staff.  Starting with Serkan at the front inviting you in.  Remember them having a fire dancer up on the terrace one evening.   Always liked the Bus Stop when it was below La Terace.

Mary, is Dana not Veal?

Dana is calf according to Google translate Jacqui   :)

Veal is calf meat.  I always understood steak to be from a mature animal?

Might be wrong but I think the butchers in Turkey use the word dana when referring to beef as in dana kryma (not sure of spelling).  Then again it may be minced veal they are selling.

If the majority of us were really really honest (those that know our steaks  :))wouldnt most of us be saying I have yet to find a great steak in Turkey? I for one would defo struggle to name a good one I have had apart from many years ago I had a t-bone at Maria's and a steak with mushrooms and onions at the Meeting Point failing that the other places I have tried have been pretty bad, one particular place was really fab for other food so I thought a steak would be grand there, I paid a bit extra for a steak and really it resembled a pork chop in the taste and also how it looked >:(

That backs up what I was saying Karen - that we have to go back a while to remember a good steak over in Turkey. My conclusion is that meat prices increasing has caused cheaper cuts and qualities in recent times. Actually Mrs Scunner always says the best steak she has over there is actually at Recep's in the fish market (she is no lover of seafood/fish). It could be because Recep was once a butcher. She wouldn't say it if she didn't mean it,she'd complain about it  :)

Have to say that the best fillet I have and they are consistent is at Castello in Hisaronu.
Proper fillet about 2" thick, very tasty and cooked to perfection every time.
The White Man also in Hissy is an extreamly close second.

I had the best fillet steak at The Sun Dial. Also really thick and the taste was wonderful. I remember it to this day....There was also at Koca Calis a small place called The lemon? it was full every night with people mostly eating their steaks. 6 months later the chef left and that was that. If I fancy steak now we go to the Meeting point for his fillet steak with mushrooms and onions. Everyone here seems to rave about Cassa De Mammas steaks but I have never tried one.

Personally I dont eat steak but have been told by a 'reputable source' that the reason most of the steak over here is so tough is because the butchers dont tend to hang the beef for long enough to enable the tendons etc to disolve......hence a tender steak!

There are 3 places I would recommend for excellent steaks in this area...
1st :   Buzz Bar in Oludeniz, in the 15 years we have been eating their steaks we have never had a chewy one.
2nd :  Bella Mama's are very tasty especially the Swedese Filet...
3rd :   Shaka, again another tender tasty and non chewy steak.
All have surpassed or matched steak we have eaten in the UK so if you haven't tried these restaurants for a good steak you really should.
Dana Bonfile is Beef fillet.
One more point....if the steak is cheap on the menu then you are probably going to get a cheap steak cut. You get what you pay for.. :D

Could it be that the good steaks mentioned here are part of the meat being exported from the UK (Eng,Wales,Scotland) also Irish,to the EU including Turkey since 2010?

We went to Buffalos in May and all five of us had entrecote steaks all were very good.

Previously had lovely peppered steaks at the Meri but this May it was a totally different steak ...smaller paler and not as tender.

Sundial steaks were good.

We are all different and have different tastes as to what we want to do, and what we want to eat, on holiday.  Personally, we don't eat steaks at home at all so when we go on holiday we enjoy a good few steaks - especially the steak with swedese sauce at Bella mama - yummy and the steak with onions & mushrooms at Meeting Point - also excellent.  I am not a steak(or wine) connoisseur all I know is what I enjoy, so may be they are not up to scratch but they are fine for us for the price we pay.  However, we also eat fish and chicken dishes whilst over in Turkey so we have a good assortment.  We also enjoy the odd chinese meal.  Surely that is what holidays are all about - doing exactly what you want and eating whatever you want to eat - whatever country you in.

Before Kipa opened we always bought our meat at one of the butchers in the Fish Market, now we always buy in Kipa as their meat is excellent.
