Title: Escaped Lion
Post by: tiggsy on August 27, 2012, 08:55:18 AM
Police in Essex are investigating reports that a lion has been spotted in a field near St Osyth.

Residents have been advised to stay indoors after a large cat, believed to be a lion, was seen in fields off Earls Hall Drive just before 19:00 BST.

Essex police are working with experts from Colchester Zoo who believe the reports to be genuine after being shown a photograph by a member of the public.

Armed police have been drafted into the area, along with uniformed police.

A police helicopter is searching the area where it was spotted and anyone who sees the animal is advised to call 999.

A lion in Essex ? That'll be the mane attraction. I bet it'll be a roaring success.

Bit too close for comfort for me!  Watched the helicopter circling last night.  What with escaped lions here and earthquakes there, no wonder I am a nervous wreck!!! :o

Dave Sparks, who runs the Red Lion pub in St Osyth, said ... "No one really felt there was any immediate danger in the village - a couple of families with young children were a bit worried but after a while they were okay." (BBC News website).

And this is because lions only eat young children and anyway a fully grown adult could easily fend one off if attacked? Must make 'em tough in Essex - or something else.

Surely you start by asking the question 'has anyone lost a lion?'!

Further to the report of the lion on the loose, Essex Police are also said to be hunting for a Witch and a Wardrobe.

What's the betting that John Terry's going to claim that he's the one who spotted the lion ?

Their Press Office has just released a brief statement in an effort to allay the fears of local residents.

"Hakuna Matata"

The owner of Colchester Zoo has said the photo which was taken of the animal is so blurry it would be impossible to confirm it was a lion or not.  The photo cannot be shown on TV as the Sun has apparently got exclusive rights on the photo !

Well, they've called the hunt off now after admitting it was probably just a large domestic cat. It also emerged that a picture, believed to be of the lion which sparked the police hunt, was in fact a fake.

It was an easy mistake to make because apparently there are a lot of large pussies in Essex.  : :)

Judging by the photo, I think they might be right

Great photojournalism from the Daily Mail. Instead of publishing the actual fuzzy photo of the cat taken at a distance, they publish an example of what a fuzzy photo of a cat taken at a distance would like. That helped me a lot. Nearly as good as Colin Powell's famous UN picture of an aerial shot of a model of what WDM might look like if Iraq had any. A great classic.
