Title: Smaller Turkish Resort!
Post by: mkwhite on September 02, 2012, 19:25:07 PM
Having had a really good two weeks in Calis,I will definitely return at some point but as this was our first trip to Turkey, next year I would like to try somewhere else in Turkey, preferably somewhere a little smaller and more traditional. can anyone recommend anywhere that would fit this description, I do not want back of beyond but smaller villages with more traditional bars/restaurants would be ideal.

May I ask what specifically you didn't like about Calis, that makes you want to go elsewhere.

Not dissapointed but it was bigger than places we usually go and there seemed a little lack of authenticity about the place, had a good holiday but with such avast country there must be other good more traditional places to try.

Bozburun, Sogut or Selimye on the Bozburun peninsular would fit the bill   :)

What a ridiculous reply.
Not everyone who comes to Calis falls in love it, I know many who didn't like it,
and a lot of people who live in Fethiye and other areas close by who don't go there.
There is far far more to Turkey for people to be able to 'go elsewhere'. and not
return time after time to Calis.

Most people want traditional, authentic Turkish, but once the tourists get to these places and start to want hotels, bars and food, just how long can they stay traditional?   As you say you do not want the back of beyond, but the back of beyond, where not many tourists get to, will be the most traditionally Turkish you will find.
Where we stay right at the back of Calis, is another world from the sea front.  The Farmers that surround us all wear the traditional Turkish dress, they tether their animals in the fields next to us and move them up and down our cul-de-sac.  They also share the produce they grow with us, as gifts.
When we come back from Fethiye or Calis Prom and sit in our garden, with the mountains as our backdrop, it's so peaceful, quiet and watching the swallows dipping into the pool and seeing the tortoises walking in the garden and around the fields is as far away from the tourist "Turkey" than you could get.  However, it's nice to go back to the "Tourist" side of things and enjoy the shops, bars and restaurants.  Think we have the best of both worlds and would not want to change that.  ;D   ;)
I can understand you wanting to try other places though, and have heard that Cirali is a beautiful place.

Why is it ridiculous >:( >:(

As far as I can see it's a perfectly reasonable question.

Indeed mkwhite didn't appear to consider it ridiculous as he answered it.

mkwhite.  We understand your question which am sure many people ask. However on the beautiful coast of Turkey you will always find touists to a degree, Wallace IO opinion has a very positive choice. Bosburun, a fantastic area with many small Turkish villages. Even the Pm of Turkey holidays there. Datca and all it has to offer also within easy distance from there. Ferry to Bodrum if you want a day out. Good to explore car or Dolmus.

Some websites to explore too. These will have a more Turkish Feel I.O.Opinion. Akyaka (very Turkish Holiday resort) can be very busy as can everywhere in July and August.

Then just to annoy there is always Ovacik......

And Foca. never been August but it might be a good option, Good Turkish influence.

I am not sure you could spend 2 weeks here but I loved Bozcaada Asadı (Island) it is so pretty and very restful - there are some photos here at the beginning of this album

Cesme and Alacati worth a visit.

Agree Lissa, I really liked Alaçatı although a tad more expensive than we like as Çeşme and Alaçatı are the playground of the wealthy Istanbulites... some of the pics in the album are from Çeşme and Alaçatı.

I would also recommend Datça although it is many years since I have been I believe it is still relatively unspoiled or possibly Turunç which I found a little too small for my liking. There are busier nearby resorts to visit though.

Doğan did spend some considerable time "tasting" the wine Ovacık2 but we didn't bring any back  :o

I was led to believe cesme was quite big,is it not?

Çeşme is quite big but Alaçatı isn't and its just up the road. We only stayed over night in Çeşme and I was personally disappointed but we didn't spend enough time there to really get a feel for the place and see some of the things I have seen on Turkish travel programmes.

mkwhite,
Pauline(wife ) has just read this thread of posts and Nichola's suggestion of Bozcaada  reminded her that Assos may be worth a look. Small but interesting, very beautiful and lots of trips close by including Troy even Bozcaada.

May help if for two adults/young older family?

Foça and Eski Foça too are worth considering and the scenery along that part of the Aegean coast is simply stunning in places.

You could try Bozburun, Orhaniye, Selimiye all on the Bozburun peninsular or Datca. All are mainly resorts geared to the Turkish market & yachties. Not sure there is enough in any of them to keep you going for a week, & other than Datca, there aren't any major supermarkets. Also, you may have to find your own way there on the dolmus from Marmaris.

May I ask what specifically you didn't like about Calis, that makes you want to go elsewhere.
Since he is looking for somewhere smaller and more traditional can we take a wild guess H, and suppose he thought it was rather large and non-traditional?

mkwhite, I can appreciate that, after enjoying your first visit to Turkey, you might feel adventurous enough to go slightly off the well-beaten track. A few years ago someone posed a question on here about which Calis restaurant served traditional Turkish food. As I distantly remember this stumped CB regulars and, through the hazy mists of memory, I think I read Scunner saying that "He had never heard of such a place". The poster , as I recall, was recommended to explore Fethiye - a larger place.

So, as you see, your question may not be all that easy to answer. "Small" may not be always be traditional (e.g. Kalkan is small but resolutely British) and "Traditional" may not have the bars you seek (I don't think that bars are really a traditional establishments in Turkey) and as soon as get really off the beaten track you will be lucky to find someone speaking English (how's your Turkish?). Nevertheless, I think people have given you some pretty good suggestions for places that might give you a quieter, rather more Turkish experience than Calis. If going to the Datcha peninsula you could go to Marmaris and catch a dolmus to the provincial capital, Mugla, on a Thursday to catch their market, have a sauna in the 12 century hamam and wander around the old part of town. Mugla is the "market town" for a large agricultural area, has lots of lokantas, and sees just sufficient European tourists so that quite a few people speak English and/or German.
