Post by: travel80 on September 12, 2012, 09:07:21 AM
Hi

I was wondering if anyone can tell me where I can get some English butter or something like?  All the butters I have tried taste a bit like cheese!!!

Hope someone can help

Thanks

The nearest butter to English is from Bim in a blue and gold packet. It is also quite cheap. You can buy Lurpak at the pork shop and occasionally at Kippa but it is VERY expensive. I would try the Bim butter first/ I think it is about 3.50TL

Bim is the best one that we have found.

I used to grind salt up very finely and soften the butter. I would then gradually add the salt into the softened butter. This made it taste a bit more like the butter I had in the U.K.

I used to dissolve salt in a tiny amount of boiling water then whip it into the warmish butter, then make it into a butter shape again and stick it in the fridge  :)

Or, they used to sell Dutch salted butter in Migros - that wasn't cheap either but as a treat why not. Butter, a treat - how sad were we :D

I agree sad or what. I used to find myself hankering after foods that I wouldn't even eat in the U.K. and getting excited to find salt & vinegar crisps. Maybe thats the ex-pat mentality.

I buy lurpak all the time here. I know what you mean about the butter as it tastes like the local cheese as if its made from rancid milk.

I have seen Lurpack on sale in Kippa but it was expensive.   I use Migros own, its not greasy like a lot of butter is and I just sprinkle some salt on it and mix it up together on my plate.

ENGLISH BUTTER ????? Surely you mean "a brand of butter usually purchased in the UK!"

Lurpak for me is the best butter ever BUT it's NOT English.

The person asking about English butter didn't even mention Lurpak, let alone ask for it, or even call it English...

You can buy salted and non salted "village" Turkish butter (as opposed to Turkish butter bought in the supermarkets) in quite a few places. Have you tried this as an alternative Travel80?

Turkish butter from supermarkets is vile and tastes like lard.

Yes it's called tereyagi, that is the Turkish word for butter, but I thought you would want the brand name, which is Pervin.

Thanks D1 for the brand name - I thought if Bewva found the tereyağı he would be OK because they only sell the one brand.

I'm not bothering with the Lurpak (from the Pork Shop) any more.  It's the spreadale one which if you read the carton is a vegetable oil based butter (which enables it to be spreadable straight from the fridge).  It's pretty much like other spreads you would buy in the UK.  It comes unsalted and slightly salted and quite frankly it's a waste of the 12 tl that they are charging for it.  I've always got a supply of Bim's butter and I'm happy with it.

Glad that I'm never going to your house and have something with butter on then, I wouldn't even cook with it.  Nobody I know uses Bim butter.
