Title: Free driving guide to exploring around and about Fethiye
Post by: nichola on September 12, 2012, 13:08:13 PM
Check out this pretty cool guide to exploring around and about Fethiye - with village driving routes.  I know some of you will be really interested in this.

It's not very long or wordy, very visually pleasing and there are lots of photos and some useful information and descriptions.

This guide is an outcome of the Taste of Fethiye project and most of you won't know Şemsi who is the mind behind the project. He moved here with his wife Asla from Istanbul a couple of years ago and it was of the best things that happened to this town. Şemsi and Asla turned out more than 200 people from the Chambers of Commerce for the Tom and Misha Jazz Benefit Victory celebrations, no mean feat! I am sure there is more to come but in the meantime I hope you like this little guide.

Fantastic and it opens up in iBooks on iPad, so really handy.
The other day we drove towards Saklikent, had village breakfast for 6tl in Kadikoy at one of the little roadside restaurants, had Kar serbati from another little place along the way, and later bought village baklava from another little place to take home for tea.
We cut off from the main road and drove back through some beautiful villages, stopping to take photos of wonderful scenery along the way.

One of the best days out for ages.
Would really recommend going around the back roads and this guide should be a great help when planning our next village explorations.
Thanks for sharing Nichola

It's my pleasure - its so great to see something so useful being produced in, and for the benefit of this area.

I have just in fact got off the phone to Şemsi and this is a trial production and if successful there are plans to develop it further and produce another one to include new areas.

The guide is going to be available in hard copy via the car hire companies and have already been distributed but as a special favour to me I will be given the few remaining copies (about 25) and these will be available at the Mozaik Bahçe restaurant for anyone who wants one.

Thanks Nichola, I'll be back over in 4 weeks and we've hired a car so this will be really useful.
We were looking for some trips off to take in the culture in the surrounding area.
Hope you will still be open so that we can call in for lunch.

Thanks Buddy, yes we will be open day and evening until the end of November but not Sunday day times.

It will be really useful if you can feedback if this Guide is actually made available with your hire car or through the company you have booked with, and how useful you found it. If anyone else wants to give me any feedback I will pass it on to Şemsi as it may help iron out distribution and availability problems or improve the next edition.

At least you have access to the online copy and I hope you have some fun travelling around, something we plan to spend some time doing ourselves this winter.

I have just read the guide and it looks good to me but unfortunately neither i or Dizzie drives, :-\   Would anyone know roughly how much it would cost to hire a  taxi / car plus driver ?  for a few hrs just to sample some of the outlying areas of fethie.

I have been asking people who have told me they have hired a car and so far not one single person has seen this free guide!!! We only had  a few copies so not enough to hand out to everyone.

Has anyone here who has hired a car actually seen this in hard copy?

I know that those of you who have commented here have downloaded a copy but that doesn't reach everyone.

I have passed on this feedback to Şemsi but I find it very disappointing that such a useful guide is not being distributed as it was intended.

I would be grateful for the following information specifically

1. the name of the car hire company

2. did you or didn't you get a copy with the car

Thanks

Nichola

My brother in law hired a car from Pegasus in Fethiye in August. There wasn't one in his car.

I have received some new information today which I have more or less just copied below. I had assumed that it had been distributed around all the hire car companies but did wonder yesterday after I emailed Şemsi if it was confined to those linked to the Tour Operators. Anyway, I did receive a reply from one of the tour operator staff who explained...

The project is funded by the big 2 Tour Operators.....Thomas Cook and TUI and therefore most of the booklets are distributed by them.

They have also been given to Europcar and to Dalaman Cars.

It was stressed that feedback is important to the Travel Foundation and collecting in questionnaires is a key part of the Driving Booklet which is why they haven't been given out more widely but where follow up can be made to with those that receive them.

I was asked to recommend reliable car hire companies and have suggested Pegasus and Orange as these are the names that keep cropping up.

I have a copy of the evaluation form here so I will at some point soon scan it and post it here for anyone who would like to give feedback.

Brilliant, we travel a lot when there, last trip went up Mount Eren and to lake , OK track a bit dodgy here and there but not bad, we also drove up to Cameli, incredible views, then back via Antilyaya. The routes further away via Seki, Elmali and back via Gombe and Kalkan lovely. The drive to Kekova Island is lovely and a fish lunch by the harbour wonderful.

Really, the guide is great, I just wish I had the time to write one including those places but also others. The coast route to Antalya if you have time is wonderful stop at Olympus, Chimera, Phaeselis on the way etc.

Sigh, so much to see from Calis Beach !

Went To look at Marmaris and Icmeler as well last trip out, (omg been back in UK only 4 days and weeping in my Raki already!), like Dr Foster, shant go there again!

I used pegasus, very competitive, fell out with them when they delivered petrol instead of diesel, but they delivered me nice Diesel that evening although I wasnt to impressed at 10pm but very apologetic and I will use them again.

I actually find it doesnt matter much, I have now used 5 different hire companies and all seemed the same!

On our return from a weekend in Marmaris last weekend we actually took what we now know as the Iztuzu and Pomegranate route in the Driving Guide posted by Nichola. The info and directions are spot on. It is a day out we will be sharing with family and friends next year. The boat trip to Iztuzu from Dalyan is good but this is a great new way to enjoy. Restaurant Golbasi would be our stop for Kahvalti next visit you are able to see the Turtles there too as the restaurant is on the inlet. The beach car parking is good as is the sand and swimming. Great for children too. the beach restaurant huts have a good range of food and drink and is not overpriced. Very highly recommended and so do-able in the day from our areas.

Coming over in 2 weeks Nichola, and using Dalaman Cars as usual, so I will let you know if they give me a copy. I hope they do as we are looking forward to taking a few trips off and the guide looks really useful.

I'm really pleased to read such positive stories and feedback and JT49 or anyone else if you have any ideas for routes please feel free to share them here and pass them on to The Travel Foundation admin@thetravelfoundation.org.uk

I have shared the link to this topic with Vicky who is one of the project organisers and who actually wrote the Guide and I know she has already checked it out and will hopefully continue to do so.

The other bit of good news is that I am to be given a lot (I hope) more copies so anyone who wants a hard copy please ask for one when visiting the restaurant.

Here is the evaluation form I was talking about. As you can see it would take very little effort and time. I'm going to ask Vicky to send me the text in a word doc and then I will copy and paste it here so you can do the same to fill in the answers.

Maybe anyone who is inspired to fill one out could mention that they saw it here on the Çaliş Beach Forum at the bottom of the form where there a space for your own comments and also any ideas for new routes.

It is the evaluation forms for this Guide that will determine what happens next and if another Guide with new routes is produced.
