It's on the Turkish news now. The prices of alcohol, petrol, cigarettes and tapu's go up from today...

Is that the tax rate or the actual price increase?

Alcohol and tobacco it is the actual increase.

I think it's very serious stuff. Once Turkey's reputation for cheap booze disappears, tourism figures will be severely hit in all areas. A 25% increase in booze prices will also cause a large hike in All Inclusive prices and maybe hit areas like Belek hard. You can get all inclusive cheaper in Spain, Greece, Tunisia, Egypt and Portugal (and others, it's a competitive market) and the beer and spirits are often cheaper in those places ALREADY...

Coupled with some of the costliest flights in Europe from the UK, things really don't look good for Turkey. Expensive to get to, expensive when you get there. Not the Turkey I discovered...

Well at least it has not got into these price brackets yet.

Top 10 most expensive countries
Greenland £7.35
Norway £6.78
Qatar £6.00
Djibouti £5.47
Singapore £5.08
United Arab Emirates £5.02
Sweden £5.00
France £4.95
United_Arab_Emirates £4.86
Guadeloupe £4.80

But on the other hand you could always go and live in these countries beer is cheap there.

Top 10 most affordable countries
Tadjikistan £0.29
Panama £0.31
Bhutan £0.36
Burundi £0.37
Korea N £0.38
Madagascar £0.38
Myanmar £0.38
Rwanda £0.38
Congo DR £0.44
Philippines £0.45

Or you can just accept the fact that it is all due to inflation and prices could not stay as low as there were.

Now as for Egypt why would anyone go there for a holiday at the moment

I think this is one more nail in the coffin so to speak, I can now go to Dubai for 7 days cheaper than I can come to Calis.
I have seen a vast change this year in many things that I once held dear in Turkey, prices going up all the time, staff complaing people not spending enough, where will it end.

Sadly you are right Ron, and as is usual with Turkey they won't see anything going, they'll just see when it is gone. Too late of course. We watched the Andy Murray Wimbledon final in a sports bar in Portugal where we sat for hours and because of the pricing policy our bill was less than 20 quid. The pricing policy was beer/red and white wine/soft drinks all one euro.

The same bill in Turkey would surely be around fifty quid once these taxes come in. I don't love it that much, sorry...

This Is very depressing. I really don't know whether to go ahead . It'll make people more desperate and possibly more crime. I hope not. Urbanisation is not a good thing. It makes hard times harder. So many have moved away from farming into tourism and maybe can't or won't go back to it. I have to admit I'm more than a bit nervous

Unfortunately we need to come to Calis for the time being, but are seriously looking at investing elsewere now. Sorry guys but it looks like someone is about to burst your bubble. I can see a massive drop in numbers next year the greedy travel companies are seeing to that, why should it be so expensive ?

We've been considering, although not to seriously, selling our little place in Calis for the past year or two now.
I think perhaps we will now need to look more closely at what is best for us financially and stop allowing our hearts to rule our heads.

So if a can of lager/beer costs 7 TL it will go up by 1.75 which yes it is a high increase at one time, but sod all anyone can do about it, but I would also say What Utter Nonsense to even state Egypt as being cheaper then Turkey as  a holiday destination when the mess Egypt is in at the moment who the hell would even go there.

Where do you stay in Dubai that is so cheap, there is no way you can compare  Dubai with Turkey, it is like London with the traffic, yes you have nice beaches and shopping malls coming out of your ears, pubs in every hotel, you cannot walk into a supermarket and buy a bottle of wine or a can of beer, hell you cannot even walk down the street holding hands with your girlfriend or boyfriend in-case you  get arrested, if you have had a good drink and get a taxi home you had better watch out that the taxi driver does not drive you to a police station and tell them you are drunk or doing something immoral in the back of his taxi.

The thing to think about is what the price of property in the rest of the world is, Spain, Portugal, Italy and France are way higher then Turkey, we have a place in Spain and we find Turkey far cheaper to live and yearly expenses on our house are far less.

Egypt has a booming AI sector, so there is no point challenging me about it - I don't run it.

You have totally ignored the point you made (wisely in my opinion as it was total rubbish). If you think a 25% hike in prices caused by increasing the tax on an item can be put down to inflation then you obviously have no grasp of economics whatsoever.

Although this is certainly bad news from a tourism perspective, I don't think it is quite as bad as some people are suggesting. The increase will surely be on the tax rate of items - not the total price. This would not make sense when an Efes may cost 15TL in Istanbul or 5TL in the Calis winter. Here is a news announcement from a Pakistani financial paper quoting the Turkish Government Official Gazette - unfortunately it is not interested in beer.

"The Official Gazette said the government has lifted the special consumption tax on most cars to 40 percent from 37 percent. The gasoline tax was raised by 15-16 percent and diesel fuel tax was increased by 23 percent, it said.

The tax on wine and the popular spirit raki was raised by 17 percent, the government's official publication said, while other types of alcohol also saw varying tax hikes".

There is no need to be rude in your reply, I could state that your post regarding Spain etc was a total load of rubbish, but the increase on Tax on alcohol and  tobacco is one sure way to make sure the economy grows, as we all know Brits and Scots like their drink and no matter what the price will still buy it.

These tax increases for 2012 were announced in the 2011 budget.

These increases mean that the prices of transport and essential food goods remains stable so at least that is good news for the lower paid Turkish families.

Since the tax rate on diesel has been increased by 23%, adding to already very high fuel prices, the cost of transport will increase. To the extent that foods are transported any significant distance to the point of sale, then food prices will also increase. This will affect supermarkets in urban areas and, presumably, the household budgets of poorer families in those areas.

Why is my post about Spain "a total load of rubbish"? Just saying something is rubbish is easy - it is helpful in debates to back up such empty remarks.

Well,

this is the result of an Islamist majority, having lived in many Moslem countries I feel qualified to say that! First we had higher tax, the age raised to 23, now we have price increases. This will probably be followed by a "license" you have to buy. Next will be an expensive license to sell. Then will come only allowed behind closed doors and not visible from outside. Then will come hours restrictions, this will be followed by a ban, Burkhas etc. Hopefully they will lose elections long before then!

I considered buying property in Turkey once, not now, I would only rent.

I realise my comments could be misconstrued as "anti Islamic", I was referring to the Government, which is predominantly Islamic and corrupt, as many will be aware half the senior military just been sentenced for plotting a Coup. Bit like in Germany in the 1930's, to remove all opposition. I do so hope Turkey does not descend into yet another Country that uses Religion as an excuse for absolute power and dictatorships!

It seems like the thin end to me   :) I jope I am wrong!

Sigh, Mustaf Kemal was one of the greatest men of the 20th century, so tragic to see all his good work being undone!

All this is of course all my opinion only

Price hikes in flights coupled with higher costs all round will impact on tourism. Turkey should have been using the 'euro' problems to boost tourism and advertise the country more.  They cannot influence the tour operators but I do think they have made a mistake with these tax increases. We have to consider the people that live there as well.  There isn't a lot to do in winter apart from socialising. The places that expats frequent will certainly feel the pinch.  I have noticed quite a few people returning to the UK in the past year but there are people living there who may own their own homes who cannot afford to return until or if they sell their homes.  This is becoming more difficult with the number of apartments and houses up for sale.

As someone who frequents both Turkey and Portugal on a regular basis I can honestly say that even though you can get cheap deals in Portugal on beer (1 euro happy hour that lasts nearly all day) we find it much cheaper to holiday in Turkey.

OK - in both places we have our own kitchen and we can buy food/cook/barbecue. Turkey is much cheaper in this aspect.

Getting about is also cheaper - no dolmuses in Portugal taking us as far as Fethiye for a quid!

Both destinations have seen huge price hikes in flights.

Can't say I'm happy with any price increase but I don't think it's the end of the world quite yet. I am more concerned about Turkey moving towards the East rather than West and as this happens I think we will see more changes that we do not like very much. We were warned when we bought there 9 years ago but things were much different then and the presiding government were far more pro West than this lot are.

Still love it but it ain't the only place in the world to holiday and the Turkish government needs to realise that sooner rather than later.

Liddle? My mate got the same beers as i got from Tesco and paid £1.59 per bottle! He nearly choked on his drink when I told him Tesco had them on at £1.25 - and I get 10% off that as well.

So 660ml for £1.12 is a far better deal and I prefer the Thai, Indian, Chinese and Spanish beers anyway- but thanks for the heads up.
