Hope that is ok with your Facebook friend...

Excellent! Thanks! Will take the link off.
-
It was quite spectacular but what a stench some of the fountain water had!
-
excellent photo's
-
Just lovely - hope it's all still there and in working order next summer (minus the stinky fountains!)
-
wow that looks lovely, have to pay a visit tomorrow i think!
-
Nice to go there late in the day to see it in daylight, then after its dark. We were there yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed the ceremony. Though the music at the end was too loud for us and our friends, and a meal planned near the Cultural Centre, was abandoned because of the agonies caused to hearing, LOL. Later, on way back to car, it was lovely to see it all lit up. And I enjoyed reading the plaque which is by the new Ataturk statue, which is in Turkish (as you would expect), and English.
-
Is it trick photography or just my eye sight, but does one face of the clock read 5.50 and the other 6.50?
-
You are right the clock does show two different times but the tower is not quite finished, there are signs to go up so it will show the time in different countries
-
It looks absolutely lovely - hopefully we will see it next June. What have they done with the area right in front of the culture centre - it was still being worked on when we were there last month.

The area in front of the culture centre is a blank canvas - intended for audiences for events I guess...
Judging by the photos from last night it is far more impressive by night than by day. Most of the fountains weren't working today and a lot of workmen around doing things to the various features.
-
OK call me picky but there are a few things I don't like.
Yes its beautifull at night and will have many uses - but in daylight its a bit bland, could do with some more greenery (although that may come once its finished) and there is a lack of protection from both the sun and rain.
-
We were there last night and it was absolutely beautiful.
-

Well if Jim is being picky then so will I. What is this obsession with having various clocks showing the time in other countries? I want to know what the time is where I am and if that is Turkey I can subtract two hours to get UK time without the need for a separate clock. I certainly would not care less what the time is in New York or Mumbai either.
-
Are they only turning the fountains on in special occasions? we were there for 4 -5 hours today and they were turned off the whole time. Dissappointing :( no lights on the fountains either apart from near the clock tower. :( wanted to see it all lit up and working, i thought it was open now? :/
-
oh and the clocks now say 'berlin' ' london' 'istanbul' and 'moscow' (i think, cant remember but im sure it was moscow)
-
Saw it tonight.
Really impressed by the lighting and fountains which provide a beautiful background for the skateboarders, boy racers and stunt cyclists.
-
It looks lovely but definitely lacking in benches at the children's playground.
No place to sit for tired (or bored 8)) parents.
-
Looked nice tonight and really, really hope they keep up the maintenance of the area :) Would guess they have to work out when to have fountains/pumps etc running to keep costs down...so probably not working most of the time ???
-
We wonder what the local Turkish people think of the new park and the way Fethiye is developing?
-
Doğan and the team went along the other night after work and thought it looked really nice.
I have reservations myself.
The huge white expanse of nothing opposite the culture centre which I assume is intended for audience events seating is an eyesore. I wonder how many events there will be to justify such a large area of open space being dedicated to nothing.
I was very disappointed when I went yesterday to see the "park" area which is opposite the Mcdonalds and is actually rather small.
The seating areas all around have no where to plant shrubs in to the ground (being concrete or whatever) to create much needed shade if they are to be useful.
I haven't been in the evening yet and I am sure it is very pretty when all the lights and fountains are working but I observed that already the water was beginning to look dirty.
The shrubs that mimic dolphins and swans etc personally I didn't like and were in need of a trim already. I prefer nature to look natural.
Slightly off topic, a law suit has been taken out against the plans to build a massive shopping centre where the old wholesale vegetable market used to be. Shopkeepers with small outlets in town are rightly concerned that the new shopping centre and the sort of big business that will only be able to afford the rents will keep people out of town and their businesses will suffer.
This is currently a nation where (and I am guessing here) a majority of the population are "shopkeepers" small entrepreneurs, self employed earning a living with little shops and outlets selling all sorts of things from, kebabs, shoe repair, knife sharpening, non brand clothes, household wares, stationery.
I understand the desire for modernization but wonder how the individuals and small shopkeepers will survive once their livelihoods are threatened in the name of progress!
I also wonder how long before the rents of the restaurants and bars along the strip by the culture centre go up!
-
A very informative post Nichola. What is happening in Fethiye today is what happened in the UK many years ago, and the small businesses have every right to be concerned. Supermarkets, Shopping Centres and out of town shopping in any order make it very difficult for small traders as the " big ones" don't just want a fair share, they want all the business. Yes we have seen it all happen very quickly in Fethiye. Out of town can decimate a town centre very quickly even in a large place like Fethiye. You can see out of town happening on the Antalya Road and would suspect that will continue as in town land/rate costs escalate. The area around the old fruit market has also been upgraded and some prominent businesses have opened nearby.
On a positive side, though big changes and losses to the small business community will happen, the strong and efficient will always find a niche and prosper.
On a negative side it is a long hard road for those small businesses and as the "big boys" start to compete for the biggest share the road becomes very hard.
Us! 31 years self employed small retail business, and so pleased to be out!
-
Interesting fact Doğan just shared with me is that Fethiye has more supermarkets (Migros, Şok, Bim, Kipa, Tansaş, Dia, etc) per registered population than anywhere else in Turkey!
Also an update on the shopping centre is that because of the court case no construction companies have registered an interest in building it - case expected to take about about two years to reach a conclusion.
-
Call me a dinosaur, but I preferred it the old way - grass, shrubs, and little bufes tucked here and there. To be fair, I haven't seen it at night but during the day it looks stark and characterless.
-
Big Big plus for Fethiye V Supermarkets Nichola is that the population is still growing very fast, and hopefully the Turkish powers that are can manage the problem better than the UK where every main street ending up full of multiples and all the looking much the same. :)

A lot of the lıttle eatıng place near the schools wıll lose out when all the schools move to Uzumlu. Does anyone know ıf ıt ıs correct that the schools area ıs to be a shoppıng complex as well.
-
The schools are moving to Uzumlu????? :o No, I think they are moving to Catalarik near the rescue. A couple are already there, not sure how many more.
-
how amazing cannot wait to see them at night
-
Was in Fethiye last night, a couple had come in from the Telmessos complex to see the lights and fountains only to be disappointed as the fountains were not turned on. Shame!

Doğan says that the plans to move the schools out of the city centre haven't been talked about recently and that there is a rapidly growing population in Fethiye which may affect these plans. The new school being built near the Animal shelter on the way to Uzumlu is now (he believes) in addition to the existing schools.
He also said I should double check this information to be sure its accurate but not sure where I could do that or who would know.
There is also a lot of shops supplying stationery items that would also be affected by these changes if they were to go ahead and move the schools.

lovely pics

that was our problem too! shame cos i really wanted to see them on :/ wonder if theyre only on at certain times? we were there from 1600-1930 and they were off the whole time!
-
There are now 4 schools built opposite the animal shelter. 1 occupied the last 2 years, 2 more the past few weeks with 1 more soon to be finished. There has also been more land cleared, possibly for more to be built.
-
We were in the park today and kids were jumping on the topiary features, getting into the fountains and one was slapping a wet t shirt against some of the ornamental bushes. Two Turkish men had a go at them and they walked off with a swagger. That park will be wrecked before it is even operating fully. Bloody shame.
-
Gunlukbasi for such a small place has six supermarkets..Sok..101..Bim..Azda..Gempa and Melissa and I may possibly have left one out . Don't know how they all make money with such competition especially as Kipa not so far away.
-
I don't have time to upload these here now but I have posted an album of some photos of the new water park to Facebook for anyone interested in seeing them.

As long as the weather is fine they will do two 40 minute shows starting at 7pm and 8pm in the evenings. I'm going to go back tonight to take more pictures as it was just by chance we were passing last night and I only had a few minutes to snap these.
Feel free anyone who cares to, to post them directly on here 8) - Added by Scunner

I've added them to your post Nichola - thanks for sharing, fabulous photos.

Lovely Nichola, take note Calis, you need to do something sooner than later, you can see a beautiful sunset sitting here by the fountains too, not just on Calis prom. ;) :)
-
HI
Exprıenced the water sychronısed show tonıght and can honestly say ıt ıs worth comıng to lısten to and see. From what I am seeıng ıs ıt ıs focused on famılıes. It ıs worth seeıng the chıldren enjoyıng themselves. :)
-
I went last night to the light show and it is well worth the trip.
Its really nice to see some good investment going on in the area, there are lots of small parks springing up. Hopefully they don't just become overgrown dog toilets.
-
Fabulous pics Nicola, truly amazing photography skills ;D
-
I so love the new dog/cat?? drinking vessels that have appeared along the promenade.
-

Calıs does not have its own council - so any improvements will be under the general Fethiye area, and looks like the Mayor is ignoring Calıs
-
Thanks Anne, I did go back armed with tripod to try and get some clearer shots but forgot to remove camera battery from charger before leaving home :'( so took the opportunity to watch and identify good places to take better shots.
There are some amazing colour changes I didn't see the first time so will go again and try to capture these.
Going back to how the locals feel about the changes I also took the opportunity to have a delicious fish sandwich at Popeye's (highly recommended) and asked them if they liked the show and if it was good for business.
The owner said that before they changed the park the tea house that was just across the way was filled day and night and he got a lot of customers from there and now its gone he has lost all that business. Some how I don't think the people attracted by the shows in the evening will compensate for that lost business as I noticed they were, for now mainly Turkish and they only stayed for about 20 minutes or so before leaving.
-
That's such a shame for Popeye to lose business. The fish in half bread etc is utterly delicious, nutritious and cheap. I hope it picks up you never know ....
-
Pff went to fethiye today and decided to say there all day even though we didnt have anything to do.. so we could see the fountains/lights all switched on. Someone said that they do daily 'shows' at 7pm and 8pm so we were waiting and then asked someone who said 'no, maybe we'll do that at the weekend' -_- so annoying lol. does anyone who lives near there actually figured out a time/day theyre on or is it just random? :)
-
That's what the guy that sets up the speakers and computer and runs the show told me when we were there last week and quite a few people I know have been in the evenings since then and have seen the shows and on Saturday they ran the second show for an hour.
-
Think they make it up as they go along really, someone just said they started the show at 8.30 yesterday! but we asked that guy with the speakers etc today and he said they werent turning them on until the weekend and that the pumps had been turned off or something :/
-
I was there on Sunday evening for the boxing and the light show came on at 7.00 pm. However, the boxing officials forgot to turn their clocks back on the Saturday evening which meant that the boxing had to be brought forward 1 hour. Therefor this begs the question; did the fountain man forget to put his clock back too?
