I just love this quote;
"Staff in Southampton were told to down tools and take the day off as news of the closures broke, and most said they were heading to the pub."
-
I can just see the headline late next year; "" New Transit Otosan, made in Turkey, now available for sale in the U.K., can be collected from Dock Gate 4 , Southampton International Terminal "". Oh, the irony !! >:( ;)

Fords factory is actually in Eastleigh, like the airport, yet Southampton lay claim; however, it is very sad when some years ago we had to time our car trips so they did not coincide with the workers shifts at the Fords factory, the exodus of 1000's of workers could put at least an hour on our journey home (less than 4 miles). The move to Turkey was on the books last year when we heard that the new factory in Turkey was being built, Turkish workers were queueing at the doors for the £1000+ a month wage offered.
Eastleigh was once the home to many 1000's of workers in the Railways Works, now just a handful, and the council had the cheek a few years back to erect a statue of a railway worker stating it depicted the town's roots!
Eastleigh also had a large Pirelli cabling factory, the work force now gone, the land is now home to 100 and 100's of new homes.
All this gone in less than 10years, but I guess that is progress, and we are officially now out of a recession ;)

I heard that Renault & Ford have joined forces to create a small car for women.
They are mixing the Renault Clio with the Ford Taurus and it will be named the Clitaurus.
The say in a statement that it will be very secure as the average male car thief will not be able to find it let alone turn it on, even if someone tells him where it is and how to do it. ;D

It is difficult when we hear of these closures, I live a few miles from the Vauxhall car plant in Ellesmere Port and they have been under threat of closure on many occasions over the years. Fortunately they have just been selected to produce the new Astra and GM are closing a German plant instead.

Ford have been building Focus's, Fiestas and Transits for the UK market in Turkey for a number of years. The closure of the Transit plant in Eastleigh has been on the cards for at least 2 years.
Peugeot, Renault and Nissan also have large assembly plants in Turkey supplying vehicles to Europe.

Have had 46 years of Ford and Jag in my life and it doesn't surprise me that they are moving production to Turkey if they only pay them £1000+ per month wages!! The new pay deal just voted in for Jag has a clause in it that any new workers will only be paid 70% of the pay of the man standing next to him doing the same job?? Its dog eat dog there now >:(

"new workers will only be paid 70% of the pay of the man standing next to him doing the same job?? "
I would hate to be on the end of the production line then ;D

I wouldn't want to drive ANY vehicle that's had your hands on it. : :)
