Title: Nice Sovalye Island Holiday in The Guardian Today
Post by: Scunner on January 14, 2013, 11:43:13 AM
This seems very reasonable for quite a unique holiday - £600 including flights and transfers:

"DEALS
Discount luxury in the eastern Med

Sick of Turkey? Go to Turkey! Or, more specifically, to Şövalye, a 1km-long, car-free island in the mouth of Fethiye harbour in Muğla. Being so small and so close to the city it overlooks, Şövalye isn't generally counted as a bonafide Aegean island and hasn't received the same attention from tourists and developers afforded to more isolated Mediterranean suntraps. The widest part of the island remains entirely forested and the scattered Greek and Byzantine remains lie untroubled thanks to the absence of roads. There are one or two restaurants on the island and many more in Fethiye, a short water taxi-ride away. A week at the Ece hotel, departing 27 April, costs from £600pp including flights, transport, sea view room, B&B accommodation and a day's Gulet sailing, if booked before the end of March".

It does, doesn't it  :)

Liz do you remember the restaurant that used to be on there - owned by a famous Turkish film director or similar? It was a wonderful setting and he was such an interesting and down to earth guy. I had garlic king prawns as a starter once and they were fantastic, and I told him so. He said something like "We just cook them in butter with a bit of garlic, they aren't anything special" :D

Yes I do remember that restaurant, it was on the headland on the Letoonia side of the island

The Hotel has a restaurant so maybe it's open to the public??
I looked up the website recently and was reading about the Hotel, it looks lovely.

It does look amazing and an excellent price. We've often fancied a trip over there but not sure where the boat is to take us. I think it may be somewhere near Palm island near the old amphitheatre? Anyone know what they charge for that?

It would seem  that the Hotel charge £15.00 for a boat after 6.00pm but this is for the Hotel Guests.
I would think a local boat might do it cheaper.

From the palms roundabout, walk along the front towards Cafe Genis & the Souvaliye Water taxi is there, just next to the one for Letoonia. It's only small, not as big as the Calis water taxis. Not sure of up to date price

I have watched a boat going to and from the island from the jetty near the Sat on numerous occasions.  Is this for public use or is it  a privately owned boat?  Have frequently thought that I would like to get on it to investigate the island, whilst I was soaking up the rays and having a nice cool efes and taking advantage of the sun beds at the Sat 8)!

I think that the one near the Sat is a private charter, I have only ever seen people getting on / off with suitcases, but the one in Fethiye is a water taxi

Hi Sadler

I think the boat you see going from the Jetty near the Sat is to the Hevan apartment on the island www.havenapart.com
We discovered this place a few years ago when we got a boat to drop us off on the island for the day.  The Sunset restaurant had obviously been closed for some time so we walked the length of the island and ended up at the Haven...and stayed all day. Wonderful place and lovely family.

Looks lovely.  Think I will definitely take a look over there on our next visit.  Any idea how to book the Haven Apartments for a couple of nights.  Went all through the link given but didn't find any prices or booking form.

I have a card somewhere Sadler with the e-mail address, I will try and find it for you.  We arranged and spent a second day at Haven, swimming, fishing, snorkling, canoes etc.  Then a lovely BBQ in the evening and the owner brought us back in his little boat. A wonderful day with great memories.

The wee boats running between sat and island are like taxis.
Usually 15-20 lira one way no matter how many of you are travelling.
I am not sure if they speak English but phone numbers for two of them:

Murat 0536 6832931
Zuhtu 0542 3871599

The restaurant ,which was closed last few years, is getting renovated and will be run by ece hotel. Nice place for sunset...

Thanks for all the info.  I have emailed them and am awaiting a reply.  Thought it would be nice to spend a couple of days, and nights, there to break our 4 week holiday.  Looks as if we are able to just visit on a couple of occasions and spend the day there if the hotel and apartments are not prepared to let for such a short period.  Looking forward to it, we always try to go somewhere of interest during our visits to our apartment.  ;)

Keith the restaurant you are referring to was the Sunset restaurant ran by Metin Duro and his wife Methap.  As you say he used to be a film director for Discovery and National Georgraphic.  They are a lovely couple and we spent many, many nights drinking and philosophising with them way into the small hours as we spent at least six years holidaying on the island before we thought to move to Calis. Unfortuately the restaurant is now closed but I think Metin still has a house on the island.

The hotel referred to is the Ece Boutique hotel (named after their daughter Ece) which is owned by Dr. Erdogan (Tourism Director at the Esnaf Hospital) and his wife Handan.  It was previously holiday apartments which we rented through Tapestry Holidays and stayed at many times.  The newly refurbished hotel is lovely.  We went for an anniversary meal there the other year and they picked us up in a boat from the Sat restaurant and bought us back at the end of the evening.  The food was lovely and the hotel and gardens had great ambiance and brilliant sunsets.  Sovaliye is my favourite place locally and I would thoroughly recommend it for a get away from it all holiday.
