I suggest people who want to walk the 4.5 km start in Calis ,because doing it the other way
fethiye to calis you got no where to sit along calis front only the bars, its about time calis got its finger out. :(
-
Are there not wooden slatted "benches" built into the seawall, all the way along the Calis seafront. As can be seen every 4/5 meters in the picture.

Ive been saying that for the last 2 years Lance, after seeing what Fethiye has done in one year, it will beat Calis hands down this season.

Hmmmm,
a choice between a wooden seat on the prom and a cushioned chair with an Efes in front of it......
I cant see that decision taking up much of my time ;)

Fethiye is a lovely place but i really look forward to when i can cycle all the way to Calis down the Prom have a day on the beach and cycle back. From a neutral point of view i think Calis has it,s own qualities and is a a lovely place maybe living there all the time you only see the negatives

I cannot see much money being spent on the Çalış Beach area in the next year, all the Fethiye council money for this type of work seems to be earmarked for the main promenade extension and lock-blocking of the streets between it and Mustafa Kemal Blv in the Babataşı district.

Baz those wooden slats are useless half of the ones on the beach are to high to get up to ,go to the other side of bench it is only 6 inches off of the ground, okay you are fit and young ,i would think the majority of people who want to use the seats would prefer to sit on a seat with a back on it ,and not a couple of dirty planks what all the kids and dogs walk on .
And yes it is nice to sit down and have a drink hopefully not efes ,but you have to pay for drinks if you have to have an efes fine, but a lot of people just want to sit and relax looking out over the sea free of charge ,fethiye prom for me every time ,hardly any dogs there no dog mess on the beach or on the grass borders unlike chalis ,also no motor bikes or scooters tearing up and down . :(

I think Lance has hit the nail on the head here, Fethiye Prom is magnificent, is well kept and makes Calis look a little shabby in comparison. Plus you don't get hassled when you walk along in the evening by bar/restaurant hawkers, as too frequently happens along Calis!
Work continues with the prom at a pace now to, I believe, as far as the BP garage where there is small dock. Unfortunately, it looks like it might stop there, as I cannot see any evidence, or indeed plans, of pushing it on to link Fethiye with Calis along the magnificent coastline. Unless anyone has any updates on whether the link will be made, and if so when???

Here is an update on the building of the prom from Fethiye Times that IanK highlighted in a related thread.

In fairness Fethiye prom was built from nothing - all that was sea. It's far easier to do impressive things (and I agree it is very impressive) from a blank canvas start than it is to take an existing working prom and renovate it. I do agree it looks tired and some of it (that beach side concrete wall for starters) could do with a pneumatic drill and a skip or 30.
To me the prom is not the problem - it is the restaurants. There is no better place to sit with a beer to watch the sunset than Calis prom but I have long since given up on the same menu in every restaurant served with the Calis holy trinity of rice chips and salad. It started as a joke but it really is lazy and dated. Given a week in Calis I would enjoy several drinks in several prom establishments but my top 5-8 restaurants are not on the prom (and mostly not in Calis either).
On a related subject mentioned by UBT - I don't think I have ever been "hassled" on Calis prom by the restaurant guys, not even once.
-
it does look impressive and there is some activity! We were told of these plans around '92 by a then restauranteur - long since changed career! We did then say we should live so long but it looks like we might- insallah! its the only reason now that we're hanging on to our place !

Please can I have the Noddy Train Franchise from Seaside to Fethiye Marina ??
-
Who came up with that idea..!
It's so good that it will never happen. Too many taxi and dolmus noses to avoid putting out of joint. The bay is made for a noddy train, awful as they are :)

Just come back from calis coffee in the nil bar there were 8 dogs running around barking snapping at each other ,why is it some people just let there dog off of the lead and just ignore it dont they realize not everyone likes dogs ,i like dogs i have always had one but never did i take it off lead unless we were a long way from other's .where has the dog man gone almost as many dogs as mangy cats down there . >:(

I suppose it is how you define 'hassle', if it is a guy standing beside his menu board who with a gentle wave of his arm asks you to view his menu ... no problem that is not hassle. If it is someone - usually a young man in his 20s - jumping out in front of you, or just to the side of you, as you stroll along the prom chatting to wife/friend/ relative and then speaking to you like you are his new best MATE ever, in an attempt to entice you into the restaurant/bar where he is employed, then that is hassle and unfortunately I seem to have had my fair share of it at Calis but not on the new prom and strangley enough in Hisaranu, where it is, I believe, strictly verbotten!!

I'm wondering what's wrong with me as I too have never been hassled in this way.

Then Steve, like Scunner, you have led a charmed life when going along Calis Beach, and good luck to you. Perhaps I am just unlucky or perhaps its because I attract that sort of attention... who knows, but I do get it.
-
Don't know if this is true but friends of ours told us it worked for them last year , if you walk beach side of the lines down the middle of the Prom paving then the guys outside the restaurants will not ask you to look at there menu or hassle you some sort of local agreement anyone else heard this ?
-
It's strange, if we walk down the front in the summer, we always get the "come and look at our menu" speel, even after over 5 years of living here. When we walk our dogs down the front most don't even look at us , let alone invite us in.
-
A few years back we were told that the 'puller in' people could not go over that line - if they did the restaurant was closed - which I think happened to the Serkul 1 when little Mehmet was out front.
-
Were there not 5 restaurants that were closed for a couple of days over the issue of "hassling".
-
Yes, but there is often a lot more to a business being penalised in Turkey than the reason given.

All the wooden benches are looking awful already

All those wooden benches are looking terrible now because of the weather damage, they didnt use the right materials. The changing rooms have also lost doors etc, very shabby.
On a brighter note, I cycled the 'new prom' yesterday and all the pavements have been laid from the Doga Sefasi restaurant (last restaurant) upto the BP garage road. All the side streets are complete and the kerbstones for the cycle path have been laid the full length along with the main walkway being flattened, ready for paving. You can see the shape of it and its coming along very fast, can't wait to be able to cycle from virtually my front door into Fethiye without worrying about cars.
