I wonder what the expat community in Calis/Fethiye will be in 20 years time. Inevitably we all pass away and whilst many of our families visit us in Calis/Fethiye, will they or would they come and live here? Times change and people change. Even now I wonder how many expats take the plunge and come to live here compared with 5 - 10 years ago. Calis is a beautiful place but I personally feel that there are fewer expats living here than before. In the last few months many well known expats have sadly passed away. God Bless them all.

I think in 20 years time any expats in Calis will be mainly those from today who are still there. Possibly a few who will make the move in the next 3-5 years but the numbers moving out is now on the decline and there is no reason to expect that trend to change. As you also mention, we are losing a remarkable number of characters from the "first wave" of retiring Brits in Calis and Fethiye in recent years. Also losing people in terms of returning to the UK due to ill health, and returning to the UK as funds run out.
That's the biggest challenge to the ex-pat community for the years to come really. The ability to live cheaply and pay for it with your interest is becoming less and less possible as prices go up and interest rates come down. I remember in 2004 a British couple telling me they had been living in Turkey for one year exactly that day, enjoyed a few Efes and a couple of meals out a week, and "had more in the bank today than we arrived with one year ago". It is this type of retirement that probably won't be possible in a few years time - certainly it will be possible for far fewer people.
I see Calis returning to being more of a captivating holiday destination and/or holiday home resort, and in the main the retired community moving down will be...Turkish.

Will always be a place to go as long as the sun shines and the sea is a kind of blue green.

Calis will always be a fantastic place to visit and to live, money permitting. I do see Calis extending towards Koca Calis. I remember Calis front being a dirt track with cars and bikes driving up and down. Then came the mono block, which has been redone in recent times. There are still a lot of new apartment blocks being built so there must be a market. People want 'new' which is unfortunate for people who want to sell existing properties. In today's news, it has been reported that the French, who opposed Turkey joining the EU have agreed to reopening talks, which indicates that they would agree to Turkey becoming part of the EU.

Sorry, no it doesn't.

Continuous building certainly does not mean there must be a market. Just look at Spain for example.

Seems to us in Turkey they just build and build and build if there is a spare bit of land up goes some sort of prooperty ??? we have seen so many buildings that have fallen into disrepair and not sold and yet more and more get built... look at the place called little lilac or violet or something similar what a waste of what were probably many years ago nice houses...
We have had a small apartment block go up in the last year next door to our complex on what we were was protected land stupidly small pool as there was no real room for a pool on the site...
End of last summer a for sale sign went up the other side and I believe that is now being built on as well, this one I am really sad about as I used to get up in the morning and there was sometimes cows tethered up chomping away I really loved this, beautiful sun and a lovely sight to wake up to by this summer it will be just another building.... >:(

I think that Calis like many seaside resorts in Spain will end up as another soulless urbanisation if they carry on building at the rate they are.
