Hiya can anyone tell how to find out what the female announcer is saying in Calis over the loud speakers ?
Luckily on Saturday we heard her and somebody in the pub we were in got a phonecall to say the electric would be off on Sunday morning.
I know it could only be about the local football team playing or the need for blood or something but also electricity or water problems.
If anyone has any ideas that would be great.
Alan.

You are right Alan, it's hard to tell - it could be something urgent like the water going off for an hour, or something trivial like a plea for blood donors to try and save the life of someone dragged from the wreckage of a potentially fatal car crash :D
-
In all seriousness - immediately after the earthquake last year many announcements were made to update residents.
You would have thought that knowing how large the ex-pat population was in the area that those in positions of influence may have seen the good sense in making "emergency" announcements in more than one language?
Not too difficult with the number of qualified registered translators in the area ;)
-
Very good point Ian.
Even when made in your native tongue, tannoy messages are difficult to understand. If I catch the odd word, I can get the gist of some of the Turkish announcements but not all.
-
Yes - I normally catch one word or two and when Gill says to me "what did she say" (as she thinks I know more than I do) my response based on the two words I actually do understand (today - water - electric) is:
"something is happening today with the water / electric" - not a lot of help really ;D

Like it. ;D Sounds exactly like our house - if any Turkish person comes to the door Rich always shouts for me and expects me to understand everything. As they say "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing", I think the same applies to a little Turkish!!!
-
I'm sure there's an App for that..!
-
I always think she is saying " on the market today, Apples are 2tl a kilo, potatoes 1tl a kilo" etc, in my simple mind!! :)

We must have been to the same Turkish lessons :D
The number of times I have practised in advance what I want to say in Turkish until absolutely perfect only for the person behind the desk / counter to rattle back like machine gun fire as they clearly think I am fluent from my well rehearsed opening line - but I will keep trying !

We are quick to say that people coming to the UK should speak English, well, the same applies to foreigners
living in Turkey - learn the language !
-
ooooooooh, lots of us are trying very hard to learn the language - the point being that tannoy messages are difficult to understand even when delivered in your mother tongue.
-
3 years at night school
But - clearly I must try harder
Ps My hearing is not as good as it used to be so the clarity of the speaker system along with a very friendly dog on site who howls and howls when the lady is on does make this a very challenging experience that we never covered in year 1,2 or 3 ;)

Very true - but I have often asked our Turkish neighbours what the message is - and they have no idea.
-
Me too. I have asked Turkish friends when they are at our place and am disappointed when they tell me they cannot make out what is being said..

I was OK last June when she said:
You may have noticed the outer layer of the Earth, the lithosphere, which is cool enough to behave as a more or less rigid shell has just moved?
Occasionally the hot asthenosphere of the Earth finds a weak place in the lithosphere to rise buoyantly as a plume, or hotspot. Don't be alarmed...........
It was the lithosphere that threw me - I missed the week we covered that but we did do "can I have 2 return tickets to Taxim Square" the following week :D

Ha Ha

Our neighbours' dog always howls when it's the lady announcer speaking...just another distraction to make it difficult to catch even the odd word!
-
So the answer is nobody knows what the hell is being said so i'll just carry on having a bucket of water on standby and torches and candles at the ready for whatever is being said and if the earth starts moving when i'm not expecting it then i'll run outside.
Sorted.
;)

Alan.
The wife might be upset with your timing ;)

Its all a question of timing and if the earth moves more than i would be expecting under any circumstances i will still run outside no matter.
Alan.

In Akyaka there is a tannoy announcement at about 10 o'clock each morning. Apparently it always says "Ali (the trawler captain) has just landed the fish down at the harbour".

Just figured out how to turn it off - but for a £49 tablet (half price for boxing day only in Tesco) it did make me sound dynamic ;) ;)
