does anyone know whether or not there are any restrictions on bringing electrical goods into Turkey  ie small televions, drills , lamps.

Subject to a 25% import tax I believe. Nowadays find normal household goods such as you describe as cheap as UK and similat if not better quality. Check the Tekzen site out http://www.tekzen.com.tr/

Brought numerous small electrical items into Turkey, either in hand luggage or hold luggage.  I think it is worth taking a chance, the worst they can do is take it from you.
