On Channel 5's 'The Wright Stuff' this morning (I didn't watch it, I listened to it) one of the topics was discussing sexual harassment. One panelist (I'm not sure who she is) made a shocking admission that she had been sexually harassed - live on TV on the Wright Stuff! This happened when she appeared previously apparently.
She explained what happened.
The other guest/celebrity appearing on the show drew what she described as something like "a specific part of his anatomy" on a piece of paper and quietly passed it across the desk to her while the cameras were rolling and the programme was going out live. She was very shocked and offended apparently.
Now I'm all against sexual harassment (and all other harassments) - but surely what actually happened was he drew a willie to try and make her laugh/spook her into getting an amusing reaction on live TV?
-
Sorry not Sexual Harassment in my book. (not that I have a book on Sexual harassment. ;)
-
I do.
-
Is this sexual harassment? .......I think I have a stalker.....some woman pops up on the 'singles looking for a date' add on CBF called Rebecca. She's sitting on her/a bed etc with the words something like "Rebecca is only 3 miles from you". It comes up on my laptop at home and on my work computer.... she must be following me ? ;D ;D
-
I do.
You would. ;D
-
I think Rebecca is being quite sensible, no matter where you are, she is stalking you from a safe distance of three miles.
-

'in your book' !! how many pictures do you have! ;-)
-
This thing is going too far now. A drawing on a bit of paper is not sexual harrassment. I wonder was this worman a certain Miss L Turner?? If so, I am not surprised at her saying that. >:(
Bewva, That woman only lives 3 miles from me as well. With my local Geography she must be camped in a field, she will be cold this morning. ;) ;D

I don't think it is funny. It sounds like very immature behaviour to me and perhaps more a reflection of his own feelings of sexual inadequacy. I don't know who any of these people are but if this was live TV I think I would have picked up the paper and shown it to the camera and made some remark about how he wished!!! I wonder if he would have thought it so amusing then. Sad barsteward are words that come to my mind.
-
I think it is indeed immature behaviour, which I must applaud. It most certainly wasn't sexual harassment behaviour. She didn't mention who the celebrity was, but I can imagine a comedian or someone doing such a thing in a private attempt to get a reaction on live tv - it was a cartoon willy sketch, not "here is a sketch of what my penis looks like, what do you think of it".
To call this sexual harassment dilutes the seriousness of real examples of it.
-
Hey! Hands off! Rebecca - 3 miles away, is mine!
-
anything can be deemed as sexual harrassment now if there is a complaint, same as racial prejudice and human rights...
light fuse and stand well back...

Scunner's opening post regarding a piece of paper being passed over reminded me of an incident that happened when I was interviewing a very overconfident young man. My colleague passed me a note which said "looks like a double glazing salesman, talks like a double glazing salesman, dresses like a double glazing salesman - even his glasses are double glazed". Had to leave the office for a couple of minutes.
-
Definately immature, but unless she did something about it at the time why bring it up.
Only one side to the story so can't judge what his intentions were, but as we see from recent media coverage there are a lot of sickos out there.
-
It's sad that drawing a willy is even thought of as sexual harassment by silly women like her (and Jacqui yes I looked it up and it was Lowri Turner - I have no idea what she is famous for?) - there is nothing more amusing than trying to shock someone at just the right/wrong moment. I once waited for that bit in a wedding where they ask if anyone knows an reason etc to speak now - to stick a huge safety pin into my mate's leg. Immature? Yes. Funny? you bet :D
I have never drawn a picture of a willy and used it to get a cheap laugh but I can't think of any reason why I wouldn't - and it would never cross my mind that I was sexually harassing someone!
It shows how far things are allowed to go. I remember a salesman who joined a company the same day I did coming into the office I was in and walking behind a secretary who was typing, looking at her screen while for no apparent reason putting his arms round from the back and giving her breasts a hearty wiggle, complete with accompanying "wayhayhay". On his first day!!! This was in the 1990s and he was given a strict talking to, no more. Today, you'd get more for drawing a willy.
I've always found a handshake is sufficient when meeting new colleagues for the first time.
-
gone to far i think, at work we no longer can call a manhole cover a manhole cover, has to be cable access point !!!!!
-

..and verbal abuse - it was called 'name-calling' at one time and most of us just learned to ignore it. Sticks and stones etc. Things are taken so seriously these days and people throw the word "abuse" around willy nilly
-
still laughing at keiths post about the new starter! just thinking about how that would go down here- OMG!!
I remember being in the chorus of a local am dram group many years ago and we were giving our 'My fair lady ' to the good citizens of Leeds. On this particular night a few of us playing young maids were on stage singing when our 'Professor Higgins' flashed at us from the wings! of course those pros amongst us carried on but it was enough to bring on a fit of the giggles in some- naturally the intention! he would probably be shot now!
I deal with cases of alleged bullying and harrassment quite regularly here and it always comes down to the how the recipient of the communication received it! In other words , very vague and open to interpretation.
-
Have to agree with Tinx on this, if this had happened at work, and taken to Industrial Tribunal, it WOULD be looked upon as 'sexual harassment'.
-
Yes that may be true - but the question isn't about whether it would be looked upon as sexual harassment, the question is, is it sexual harassment? :)
-
Depends on how you look at it.
-
The question is, would he have done this if the other guest was a man?
Answer. No! He did it because the guest was a woman therefore the act of drawing no doubt an over sized willie to get a cheap laugh was down to gender and therefore an act based on the sex of the recipient.
Was it harassment? Maybe! Maybe not! It would as has already been said depend on the woman on how the receiving end felt about it. Some may just laugh it off and see it for as a reflection on him. Others may feel shocked, others embarrassed and unsure how to respond and if this is live TV not a very nice way to feel I would imagine.
-
Actually I think a man would do this to another man. Normally along with a slogan such as Dick Head.
-
I honestly doubt there would be many people (male or female) shocked at a drawing of a willy - and size is not important ;D
-
Agreed - but even if you were offended - were you also sexually harassed? I simply can't see it.
-
We are almost getting into the sharing of joke texts that are sexually related with the opposite sex being harassment.
No way as I see it. I will forward risqué texts with certain females at work because I know they will find them humorous, that is not harassment...(I think) :-\
-
But if one decided to take your text as harassment rather than humorous, including her might cost you your job.
It's ironic that at the time where women are finally at their most equal and more free than ever to live as liberated a life as they now can, that some of them go out of their way to find reasons to be offended.
If I was sitting at a bar and a girl passed me a drawing of her fanny, I wouldn't feel in the least harassed. There, I said it!
-
Being accused of sexual harrassment is a very unpleasant and stressful experience.
-
The definition of sexual harassment......
'Sexual harassment is bullying or coercion of a sexual nature, or the unwelcome or inappropriate promise of rewards in exchange for sexual favors'
In my eyes... no, not sexual harassment. He drew a picture and passed it to her... he didn't bully her or coerce her.. and if it was only a sketch he didn't promise any sexual favours...
-
Keith! - that just made me laugh sooo much! But you're right.
-
Its incidents like this that make me glad to be self employed
-
How bloody ridiculous! I think if it was me the paper was passed to I would have held it up for everyone to see and ask others if they thought it was a self portrait. turn the tables at every opportunity; to be honest I probably would have collapsed in a fit of laughter.
-
I do wish that we had a 'like' button on CBF...
-
I do wish that we had a 'like' button on CBF...
We did and it was taken away from us because us children abused it and other kids felt they were being persecuted by it ;) :D Now I call that harassment ;)
-
Just think he s a bit of a cock !
