Ventured out for a wander into Calis today... a few changes occuring and a few businesses emptying too. First we noticed that Taurean Properties office had been completely emptied and it looks like the Bombay corner has been emptied too. The windows are covered up so we couldn't have a good old nosey, very deserted! Barbarella restaurant is up for rent, and the nightclub (downstairs) below Guneş ışık (Frank Cannons). Although that place seems to be up for rent every year. I had a little chat with Eddie and he said that Chinese Breeze was up for rent, and the Orient too.

Calis Beach restaurant has a big neon sign outside saying Indian restaurant, I wait with baited breath to see if they are another one with a genuine chef from Bradford.

We saw that Mark and felt a little excited! Hope it's good!
-
The sign to Calis Beach Restaurant, on the back road, also indicates that it is now an Indian restaurant, but when I walked passed on the prom, there's no menu displayed, so can't confirm.

thanks for the update snippets , Were quite looking foreward to the changes in Calis when arrive in june , every year some places change owners / renters some staff of the previous years tend to move around ,but ones like mangol , georges nil bar tend to keep most staff year after year so they must be happy staff , whats happening to our friend from the meeting point ? any info

Well, I find that usually the best Indian Food is either cooked in the family home or in an area such as Rusholme in Manchester where the Asians eat and the competition if fierce, about 100 restaurants in total now I beleive.
Oustide of that it is usually poor substitute british style sloppy Curry mainly cooked by Bangladeshi guys whom once watched someone cook!
Would be wonderful if there was a proper Indian restaurant in Calis but I cant see it ever happening! Unless a real Turkish Chef wants to come stay with us for a while and The "Memsahib" who was born and bred in Jamshedpur can give him true lessons? There is of course the simplicity of Indian food which is against it in the Restaurant business, preparation is all, and each dish should be cooked individually and bearing mind that can easily take 1-2 hours ---
Best Restaurants I know may have 4-5 starters, 3-4 main courses on the menu, (and when one is gone it is gone!), and strict timings, for example Dinner starts at 7pm and last orders 8.30 pm. Also the ones where you ordder fopr the following day and at an agreed time -- wonderful food!
Anyway this post was more abouit changes in calis but I am famous for my Rabbit! Its also Sunday and this gets me away from the weeding!

Calis Beach Restaurant will be Indian at the start of the season, I believe.
The waiters and kitchen staff will be the ones who previously worked at Bombay Corner.
The business does not belong to Bombay owner but to some of the workers.
-
Aspava closed a couple of weeks ago as well
-
Thats a shame Mark, i remember you and Carole. Ann and myself had a really nice lunch there a couple of years ago.
-
Sounds like we can rip up the Bar and Restaurant Guide :(
-
Aspava is only closed temporarily and reopens on 1st of April.
-
has it got new owners George? because it had a for rent sign up last week.

Not so excited if its the staff from Bombay Corner, unless they have a new chef?
-
Meric confirmed to me that Barbella will re open on the 1st April, it will be without Emre who is doing his national service.
Shame about Aspava, wont reopen til after I'm back in the UK on this trip, had a couple of nice lunches there.

Bunny B unny, Yack Yack! :)

Glad to hear Aspava will reopen.
We've had a couple of half decent meals there as it saves us going all the way to the front from Violet which can be a long stroll home if you've had one too many and missed the last dolmus

Not sure Mark, Cenan the owner is still there each day even though its closed. I'll ask him when I pass tomorrow
-
Don't worry about Aspava being closed Mark, the new Zayra has superb pides and apparently great lunches too.
-
Shame about Aspava its one of my favourites locals, hope its the same staff.
-
I really hope the Aspava has not gone. They have catered for us in howling winds, high rains and powercuts before now....each time with impeccable levels of top cheeriness and efficiency.
Tip: Their Adana kebab is TO DIE FOR

Maybe it's time for an updated one H. I'd pay again. Really useful.
-
is Barbarella the one that the Bellissima lady has an interest in? Whats happening with the Orient- surely thats not changing hands. That wont be right the thought of Mehmet not being in Calis it will be like the apes leaving Gibralter! ( if you know what i mean- err not good!)
-
There is a new place opening up Sam and Ella's Cafe?
-
Good to know that Aspava will Re-open, had some nice Lunches There when we did not want to go down to the Front!
Can you please let me know where The Calis Beach Restaurant is situated, cant quite place it!
-
Mr. H. Can we have a new restaurant guide, this time with telephone, mobile numbers and e-mail addresses included. ;)

Starting at the viewing point, turn right facing the sea & it's about 3/4 of the way to the end of the prom
-
Thanks for that! I can place it now.

Meric has emailed me, they were trying to rent it out & move elsewhere but no takers so they are now going to revamp the kitchen (it's not big enough for them) & stay there another season, still on schedule to open on the 1st April.

Not quite the end, but Thomas Cook have announced they're closing 195 shops and making 2,500 people redundant. They should reduce the price of flights and package holidays otherwise it will be the 'end' for more business's etc. This is just the start.l
