Title: Foods I miss from the country of my birth
Post by: Marggie on March 09, 2013, 09:48:01 AM
Lizdev's post on the Burger King thread got me thinking about foods I miss.  Fortunately some are available from the internet now.

Cockburn's haggis
Gow's morning rolls
Stornoway black pudding
Charley Barley's steak pie
Golden Wonder potatoes
Kerr's pink potatoes
Salt herring

So what, if anything,  do you all miss?

We used to travel to the UK with two suitcases of clothes etc, packed inside two suitcases. So, on the return to Turkey, we had two whole suitcases to fill up with UK goodies. Good times.

We too put one case inside the other when travelling to the UK and then have two cases on our return to fill with goodies.  Have just done our list for when we go back.

And what is doing that shopping like for you Marggie? For us it was like two kids in Toys r Us, after months and months of Migros :D

When I used to moan about having to pay the same price for the kids for flights, I used to remember that we got two x 20kg more with that  :)

Keith last winter we didn't manage to get out to Turkey until 20 December, that was the first time in seven years we had been in the UK in the run up to Xmas.  I was like a kid, there is so much variety for Xmas - party food, booze, choccies, decs, mince pies, shortbread and proper cheese biscuits, we were well stocked up with goodies last Xmas.

Unlike me, my husband is very organised and knows exactly what we are short of and need to take back but that doesn't prevent him from buying things that aren't on the list.  His favourite saying is "it won't go to waste" and it never does.

One of our favourites to bring back was sauces for chicken etc - like black bean sauce, Thai red chicken paste, curry sauces. You could get them in foil pouches which was excellent as the jars don't half eat up your baggage allowance. Chicken was so cheap there at that time but you couldn't find any thing like sauces to liven it all up a bit.

Oh, and sachets of chip shop curry sauce powder - just add water, brilliant :D

Marggie - that made me smile - firstly we went back to UK (Manchester) on Dec 20th after12 months in Turkey so I suspect we "swapped" seats on the plane :-(

As regards to the famous "list" - I love lists and although we had about 6 small things to brink back in 4-weeks for our next 9-month trip - I have now had to book another 20 kilo case as I have 30 kilos so far and it is definitely my fault - not Gill's - so it must be a man thing - e.g I must have my Black and Decker sander etc :-)

The foods I miss:

Potato Cakes
Cream Eggs  :)

Four weeks before you go back Ian, you still have time for a fair bit of shopping, maybe you should book some more kilos just in case.  :)

Every time we are getting ready to go back, Rich will ask "how are we for weight" and every time I say "it's looking okay"  but of course, we are always struggling with our allowances.  One would think that as the years go by there would be less to take back but is there?  Oh no.

Here's one of the few photos I can find of them Ian - they aren't around much and I remember they often had a white ingredients/bar code label over foreign writing - worth trying B&M, Home Bargains etc for them too as it might be imported in the foil pouches:

Also the small glass jars of Thai green chicken curry paste - glass but only about the size of a Shiphams paste jar - and it's like heat factor 1000 so if you like it tasty but not mad spicy you can get around 3 meals from those little jars  :) I think you use it with coconut milk which was available in Turkey most times.

I actually did think I had seen them in b & m but I had a quick "google" and could only find glass jars so a trip tomorrow will be made:-)

B & M and Home Bargains - I have loyalty cards for both  ;)

We are big fans too - especially the kids, their measly pocket money goes much further there  :) - I remember when we were buying our UK goodies for our return to Turkey, Mrs Scunner comparing the prices of everything, me comparing the weight of everything :D

Food I miss from my country of birth.  There's Indian, Chinese and Thai to start with!!!

Not sure there is any food I am really missing that I can't get here, even if I have to pay a pretty price.  Although I do miss a good pint of bitter, and the occasional bag of boiled sweets like Army and Navy, Pineapple chunks, pear drops and clove balls.  Mind you they are increasingly more difficult to find in the UK these days.

You are all very spoilt these days UBT, like you say you can get most things. In 2004 you could get nothing "British" at all, except the occasional rogue batch of McVities chocolate digestives or Salt and vinegar crisps that would spark an ex-pat Wacky Races competition up the Calis to Migros road :D

You can get little individual portions of marmalade and jam in B&M (like the hotel ones) - really handy to pack for Calis as the jam over there is like tasteless jelly!

The Thai green curry paste in Kipa is absolutely delicious mixed with coconut cream, milk and a little bit of sugar.
They've also got large jars of Hoisin sauce in there at the moment and that's probably the nicest I've had.
Other sauces are so easy to make, sweet and sour, sweet chilli etc,
If anyone wants recipes let me know!

The things I miss most are mature cheddar, Kenco really rich coffee and Nestlé double choc mochas

Jerk Chicken, Roast Yam, Boiled Green Bananas, Fried Plantain, Curried Goat. Ok so I can cook most of these & also buy them here in Brighton from a local take-away however they are not done over a wood fire on a building site whilst my parents are building their own home, that's the memory which makes it "taste" so much nicer!

What about "rag pudding" or is that just around Oldham & Rochdale?

The first time I went into our local chippy he told me he sells twice as many of those compared to Hollands puddings and an hour later I could understand why - gorgeous :-)

Never heard of it Ian but it seems to be a mince and onion suet pudding.  I'm sure it will taste delicious.

It is a suet pudding with steak and kidney and they wrap them in muslin as part of the cooking process.

I will never forget I went to see the owner of the factory that made them locally (for business reasons) and in his book of testimonials was a letter from a 26 stone man who said "nothing has gone right in my life for years and my doctor says your puddings are killing me as I eat 5 or 6 a week with chips and peas and gravy but I think they are fantastic" - strange world we live in????

Please keep  adding  to this thred a little longer   as it has inspired  both my wife and myself    to collect a number of  small lightwieght goodies up to around 5 kg  ,eg  strong chedder , colemans mustard , chocie plain biccies,  even cruppets [ with a 7 day sell by date ]  and some other things   that calis residents are missing or longing / crave for  :P :P and bring them over to Calis  in June so the 3 C,S can raffle or sell in the shop to help boost funds .

Ian by the way my wife still boils up suet pudding wrapped in cotton cloth  stuffed with rasher bacon off cuts & onion in the same way as my late  dear mum and  and late gran use to do , yummy i must add  :P

When our son moved to Jersey we used to take him out Lorne sausage.  Unfortunately said product has gone seriously downhill at this end.  At xmas he got some from a local farm shop and it tasted better than anything we can now buy.
Wonder if he could bring some here????

Sorry to disappoint screamlead, but Hollands have changed their 'meat and potato pies' for 'potato and meat pies'. They are all potato and not much meat these days. :(

Old fashioned pie and mash with parsley sauce.I wonder if over 60 years ago the pies had their fair share of horse meat?
Going into Caters with my Nan to get bacon bones, she made the most wonderful ham and lentil soup with them.

Oooer - Hollands going down the drain?? We used to get some great meat pies from a place in Todmorden called Astins on the yorkshire/lancashire border we had them for years until i moved away.
Sadly they were closed down after being found to be putting alsation in their pies :o

Marggie - no chance - sorry its a family secret that only i now know - suffice to say it won the worlds FIRST Dock pudding championship many many moons ago. The town ended up full of Yuppies who all thought they could cash in and market the stuff but dont have a clue how to make it properly. Its all down to the size of the 'dock' the ingredients/type and how its actually made which is nothing like any of the recipes found on google. A lot of it also comes down to the location you get them from too, theres not many places left and it only grows in the calder valley, mainly in a place called Hebden Bridge on the railway banking. Bunging nettles in was a personal choice too and is not part of the original recipe, nettles make a decent wine. The 'dock' polygonum bistorta makes a decent sparkling wine too. :D
