Lance Corporal James Ashworth of the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards is to be awarded the Victoria Cross.

James died in southern Afghanistan in June 2012 as he protected his colleagues from a grenade blast.

His commanding officer said

“He was killed while fighting his way through compounds; leading his fire team from the front, whilst trying to protect his men and he showed extraordinary courage to close in on a determined enemy”.

"His professionalism under pressure and ability to remain calm in what was a chaotic situation is testament to his character."

Heartbreaking interview on the radio with his commanding officer yesterday reminding us all of his family's grief.
