Post by: Kevin Sowten on March 20, 2013, 14:57:03 PM
I changed £50 to lira today in the Post Office as initial float for next week in Istanbul.

Post Office ALWAYS seems to have the worst exchange rates against any foreign currency. Tesco were showing 2.689 Turkish Lirasi to the GBP yesterday.   :)

Agreed - but if you really must (Frank Cannon's, late night arrival for example  :) )  I have found the best place is Ramsdens Gold if you have one of them. Certainly never the Post Office.

The Post Office was the only choice (one horse town)
Taking sterling to change out there for the rest.   ;)

May not be practical for everyone but I always take some lira back to UK.
I then have some arrival money when I go back to Turkey.

It's only 2.73 on the exchange today Andy, 2.65 in London seems remarkable.

I suppose it is time for my annual reminder that the best rates come from using the right debit card. Then, if you don't have TL left over from your last visit, you can use plastic at Dalaman Airport ATM. You are charged the day after withdrawal. So, if I had taken out hole-in-the-wall cash at DLM yesterday, using my good old Norwich & Peterborough card, my rate would have been 2.7248 TL/£. Anybody beat that?

Other no fee/0% exchange charge cards are available. It takes 2/3 weeks to open up a new account (for holiday use) if you haven't got a good one already,

Yep, I think Norwich & Peterborough are the only ones who don't charge for withdrawing foreign currency.
It is the only "mainstream" bank to offer this on debit cards. Other banks have good overseas credit cards - e.g. Halifax Clarity, Nationwide - but, of course, these charge interest on your ATM withdrawals. So I use N&P Debit for ATMs and Nationwide for credit card payments.

I find our local Ramsden's Gold shop is always the best rate in town.

Talking of town, I noticed today Thomas Cook offering 2.61, WH Smith advertising a miserly 2.48!
